Jason Day into the WGC-Dell Match Play semis

By David Lord / Expert

Jason Day will meet Rory McIlroy in a blockbusting semi-final tomorrow of the WGC-Dell Match Play in Austin, Florida.

Day accounted for Brooks Koepka 3 and 2, while McIlroy looked good in soundly beating Chris Kirk, ranked 53 in the world – 4 and 3.

The other semi should have been between Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson, but Spieth was bundled out in the round of 16 by South African Louis Oosthizen 4 and 2, while Watson failed to surface from the group stage, won by the bolter Patton Kizzere, ranked 63 in the world.

Only six golfers went through the 16 group stages with three wins – Spieth, Day, Bill Haas, Zach Johnson, Patrick Reed, and Oosthuizen – and only Day and Oosthuizen are left.

The other semi will be between Oosthuizen and another bolter, the Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello, ranked 52 in the world.

Oosthuizen played no nonsense golf to beat Dustin Johnson 2 and 1, and Cabrera Bello, ranked 52 in the world, sent Ryan Moore packing 2 and 1.

Of the four left, Day was simply brilliant in the round of 16 with an eagle and six birdies to Brandt Snedeker’s four birdies, but McIlroy was the leading light in the quarters with an eagle and five birdies to Kirk’s two birdies.

Day wasn’t far behind in the quarters with four birdies to Koepka’s two, Oosthuizen four birdies to Johnson’s three, and Cabrera Bello three birdies to Moore’s one.

The results of the round of 16:
Louis Oosthuizen beat Jordan Spieth 4 and 2.
Jason Day beat Brandt Snedeker 3 and 2.
Chris Kirk beat Bill Haas 2 and 1,
Brooks Koepka beat Matt Kuchar 1-up.
Rafa Cabrera Bello beat Byeong-Hun An on forfeit.
Ryan Moore beat Patton Kizzere 4 and 3.
Dustin Johnson beat Patrick Reed 3 and 2.

Quarter finals:
Day beat Koepka 3 and 2.
McIlroy beat Kirk 4 and 3.
Oosthuizen beat Johnson 2 and 1.
Cabrera Bello beat Moore 2 and 1.
