Green and gold glory a boost for Roar

By Ed Jackson / Wire

The likely return of captain Matt McKay from successful international duty is poised to boost Brisbane’s A-League Premier’s Plate quest.

McKay will return to the Roar full of confidence after the Socceroos sealed their passage to the next stage of World Cup qualification with wins over Tajikistan and Jordan.

Teammate Jamie Young said aside from the obvious gain of simply having McKay’s ability back at their disposal for this weekend’s clash with Newcastle, the midfielder’s Australia duties are sure to put a spring in his step.

“The fact they’ve gone away and had two fantastic wins, he’ll be full of confidence,” goalkeeper Young said.

“He always adds a little step to our game.

“We’ll be certainly welcoming him back.”

The Roar will also have defender Jack Hingert back in their lineup after he missed the dramatic 2-1 win over Sydney FC due to suspension.

The Roar trail table-topping Melbourne City on goal difference only with two rounds to go in the season as the chase for top spot nears a thrilling conclusion.

Young however says no-one at the Roar is thinking beyond this weekend’s clash with the struggling Jets, who lie eighth on the ladder and are out of finals contention.

“We’ve got a lot to play for but we have won nothing yet,” Young said.

“We’ve got to be on our game and very focused on playing well and getting a result.”

While I agree JA looks like he's seeing the world as nothing more then a blur when roar are on the back foot I have more faith in the Aloisi boys then I could've hoped to have in Frans last year. Moments you went a goal down and knew there wasn't a point, let alone 3 to be gained. I don't believe JA is the best tactician about but all the same he is doing something right. The tenacity and ability to always pose a threat to the opposition is a great thing to have in a team. The roar look capable of delivering 'and they've pulled it out of the fire' moments more often than not this season. JA seems to have all the lads motivated and in a good frame of mind and seeing off sydney for the season (arnie with his head in his hands) should warrant a contract extension alone.

Am I missing something here? Matt McKay did not play one minute in either of the Socceroos' two matches, so I fail to see how a non-performance can be a boost to Roar in their match against Newcastle. His return may be a boost, but that has nothing to do with the Socceroos being successful. Jamie Young's support for Matty is probably political, because you can almost bet that Matty was in the Theo dressing room camp that convinced the Aloisi Brothers that reinstating Theo was a good move after Roar was hammered 4-0 by Victory at AAMI Park earlier this year. All I can contribute is that the score could have well been 7-0 or 8-0 were it not for Jamie Young's efforts. There again, the Aloisi boys give the impression of being dumbstruck when things go badly. Let's hope we don't need any mythical boost to see off Newcastle.

Towser - I haven't been but the two Brisbane tip shops apparently have some good bargains. There is one at Acacia Ridge on the southside. Perhaps their popularity has an impact on crowds.

Talking to folk at the club after the deal was announced they're very excited about the plans not just for the Roar facility but also for the additional sporting facilities and other infrastructure going in around it. It is a big site by all accounts and Roar get a bit of it but with a view to expanding in the future. And yes, you do sound like a man that knows the Brisbane tip scene - you should write a roar blog on it and the potential effect Brisbane tips have on home/away average attendances. Could be interesting?

Know Pine Hills well Waz, coached juniors at the club before they located to on top of the tip, prior to that lived near the tip and dumped there regularly. You would presume from current banter that I am a tip afficionado, some people like to travel I love visiting tips, well not quite. However all this tip talk took me to having a look at a satellite view of the area. It seems within the Heritage park area ,next to the current tip, there's been a massive clearance of land, its extremely obvious, because the rim of the area is still what is obvious bush. Could have been the former tip , but seems larger than that. Cant say this is for the Roar's new training centre or a new housing development ,but its large.

Towser, I don't know the area all that well but yes, it sounds like it, it's the area around and on top of the former landfill site that has been designated for sporting use - a smart move by Logan Council as there's not much else you can put on top of landfills. I visited a junior club (Pine Hills) who have council facilities built on a landfill and have to say I was impressed, certainly for a junior club - they had facilities way better than my junior club (with only 20% of the members) and I dare say better facilities than Roar currently have lol.

Haha Add in some thoughts on our apparent lack of marketing sponsors and go for promotion/relegation not being needed yet. Add in comments on the salary cap and whether 6 teams in the finals is too many...

So Waz , I've been to the Browns plains tip a couple of times(recycle things there if I remember) seemed a lot of vacant bushland around it(tip), is the new training centre thereabouts? Noticed also that Logan residents are getting a special two for one and half price family pass deal to celebrate Roars move into the area.

My grass is still growing. That's probably reduced BR's attendance this season. And there's a sign supporting promotion and relegation in this country right there, the grass grows in other countries where they have promotion based on merit. The grass grows over there therefore we must have automatic promotion based on merit, it's only fair.

It is Ian, blue sky's and perfect temperatures all the way through to next week. sweet. One of us should write a roar article on it, add in a bit on how the weather affects Roars home/away average attendances using statistics from dodgyststistics.com.au and maybe slip in an arguemet for pro/rel based on the weather? ..... it would fit right in !!

I'm a bit surprised this even makes a "news story" as there's nothing in it really - Mckays back and will play, Hingert's back and will play, Jets are our bogey team and they will play. News? A story? Not really - right up there with "there will be some weather today"! Maybe on the day BRFC moved their Administration team into the site of their new $9 million training Center and Academy at Heritage Park - that might have made a better story?
