Carlton Blues vs Sydney Swans highlights: Swans thump Blues by ten goals

By Joel Erickson / Roar Guru

Match result:

The Swans remain undefeated in 2016 after a 60-point victory over the Carlton Blues (20.11 131 – 10.11 71).

REPORT: SWANS KICK AWAY FOR BIG WIN

It was the big boys that did the damage in the forward line for the Swans, as Franklin, Tippett, and Sinclair kicked 11 goals between them. The midfield was also good, winning the clearances by 7 and the contested possessions by 20.

The Blues once again will take heart from a loss, as they were far from bad in this match. Dale Thomas was the standout for the Blues, with 25 disposals and a few eye-catching plays, including a very good one-on-one win against Lance Franklin.

Sam Kerridge and Levi Casboult both kicked two goals for the Blues, who have been far from disgraced in this match.

Final score
Carlton 10.11.71
Sydney 20.11.131

Match preview:

Carlton were impressive in defeat last weekend, but they’ll need a minor miracle if they want to knock off the Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:30pm AEST.

The Blues performed well above expectations last weekend against the Tigers, but a bad fourth quarter fade out doomed them to a 9-point loss. Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs were instrumental through the midfield for Carlton, almost dragging their side over the line in the pulsating clash. With most expecting Carlton to finish in the bottom two in 2016, the performance was a pleasant surprise for Blues fans.

The Swans were brilliant in Round 2 against the Magpies, jumping out to a 62-point halftime lead on their way to an 80-point victory. It was the midfield that did the damage, with four players grabbing 30 disposals, including a 40-disposal performance from Luke Parker. Lance Franklin also marked his return to AFL football with four goals in a dominant performance.

Two changes for the Blues for this clash, as both Sam Rowe and Dylan Buckley have been omitted from the side. Dale Thomas comes in for Carlton, while Charlie Curnow will play his first game at AFL level. Ciaran Byrne and the two aforementioned omissions will be the emergencies for the clash.

Sydney will make just one change for this clash, but it’s an important one as Ted Richards comes back into the side. Michael Talia is the man to come out after suffering a foot injury. This means Callum Mills, George Hewett and Tom Papley all keep their spots after impressive Round 1 performances.

Prediction
While the game itself is fairly easy to predict, the margin may not be so easy. Carlton showed a lot of fight last weekend, and if they can bring the same pressure this weekend, we could set a competitive game. However, the Swans shouldn’t lose this one, and they’ll go into a Round 3 clash with GWS at 2-0.

Hal - "I am tipping Sydney to smash Carlton by over 100 points." the Swans win by 60 Hal - "“I think Richmond will demolish Carlton by over 70 points” the Tigers wins by 9. I think it is fair to say the blues are around a 10 goal better team than you give them credit for.

Signs of things to come for Carlton. Not allowing Waite to renew his contract for two years, and instead letting him walk, because Carlton would only give him a year was a big mistake that keeps biting Carlton on the ass. Letting Betts and Garlett go are further mistakes that have stung them. Off loading Laidler was a stupid move. Picking up Thomas was utterly ridiculous.Carlton look incapable of kicking a winning score. Can any one tell me who they will beat this year?

Spot on Joel, when you get 7 goals from your 2 ruckmen you are having a good day. Sydney's midfield were well on top and provided great service into their forward line. Too many turnovers from Carlton today and 4 posters didn't help but some positive signs from young Curnow and Weitering had another good game.

9' Franklin is one out deep, but he's been flat out beat by Daisy Thomas. He got front position and took a solid mark. If he wasn't in a badly beaten team, he'd be a candidate for the MVP Voting. Blues 7.11 53 Swans 17.10 112
