Muscat: Victory must move on quickly

By Vince Rugari / Wire

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat says his side must quickly shift their focus to the AFC Champions League after a heartbreaking end to their A-League championship defence.

Victory dominated Friday night’s elimination final at Suncorp Stadium, won the possession battle and had a litany of chances on goal but fell victim to a trademark comeback from Brisbane, losing 2-1.

It was a shattering way for them to end their season but there’s little time to dwell on it, with a long trip to China looming and a clash with Shanghai SIPG on Tuesday night that is crucial to their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the continental tournament.

Muscat cut a disconsolate figure after the match but said the quality of his team’s performance in Brisbane, despite the result, would help them bounce back.

“We’ve got to get ourselves up pretty quickly. I shouldn’t imagine it would be too hard to pick ourselves back up,” he said.

“To be eliminated in the manner that we did and the way we played, I’m very proud of the players.

“What they put in, how they went about the discipline they had to deliver a structure to get on top of Brisbane to limit them to very little at home – it was outstanding.

“I’m just disappointed for them.”

The loss marks the final A-League matches in Victory colours for Kosta Barbarouses and Gui Finkler, who have both signed next season for Wellington.

But it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of veteran striker Archie Thompson’s career.

The 37-year-old didn’t make it onto the field against the Roar, and was inundated with messages from supporters after the match who had assumed his time as an A-League player was over.

However, Thompson tweeted after the match: “Thanks for all the tweets. it’s very humbling but this lights not been put out yet.”

So he hit the post, not missed it. I stand corrected. How is it that you can accuse other players or teams of choking, but if a MV player is accused of choking you blow up.

"certain MV captain took a penalty shot and put the shot wide of the goal" Wrong. He hit the woodwork - either the crossbar or the upright. It was a venomous shot - 1 inch the other way it was in. Definitely not wide. It was the only penalty Muscat ever missed for MVFC. And, SydFC player also missed a penalty after that, so it canceled out. Then another MV player (think it was Marvin Angulo) also missed. Everyone misses penalties. Ronaldo & Messi have missed during penalty shootouts. Ridiculous to suggest they've ever choked - they thrive in the big games. You may be too young to remember, but Muscat took the penalty for AUS in the 1st leg of the WC knock-out qualifier against Uruguay at the MCG in 2001. Viduka, Okon, Harry, Craig Moore all didn't want the responsibility. IF you watch the video you'll see Okon couldn't even watch he was that nervous. Muscat calmly took the ball. Placed it on the spot. Slotted it home. Muscat choking.. what a load of nonsense.

It's a joke when you know the person.,, when you're a rival fan and the rival player is showing you enough humility to shake your hand after an agonising defeat....and then you pull that sh^t? It's the furthest possible thing from a joke and you know it. Its nothing but a disrespectful act. The little turd fan was mocking and ridiculing DG, so stop descending to the same level of disrespect as that turd fan, and just acknowledge that fact. Talk about having absolutely no dignity in victory (pun fully intended). Sore winners mate.

I disagree with that general point of view. For many of the Victory games this year, both halves have been equally bad.

"Therefore I deduce you are a multi acting for someone else." 3 guesses who you're referring to. Nah mate I'm not Vic tory.,and I'm not Lester.. Anyone else want to accuse me of being other people? I'm quite comfortable calling you out under my own username not someone else's. And surprise surprise, another nonsensical waffling diatribe..that manages to rattle the bones of the NSL bogeyman no less. Zzzzz

I don't know if I would call Brisbane's game on Friday night a choke, they may not have played well but are still in the competition. I seem to remember a penalty shoot-out between Sydney & MV in a grand final a few years ago when a certain MV captain took a penalty shot and put the shot wide of the goal. I suppose that could be called a choke.

Nice comments Vic tory - charming from a malaka. Too bad your members don't turn up to the games. Your average crowd at AAMI is under 20,000. Congratulations. And yes we have members and crowds. We just play in a 52000 seat stadium.

It was just a fake handshake. Ask yourself this - why couldn't Georgevski just turn his back and walk away? He didn't because he's part of a club that thinks and acts like it's above any laws.

Vic tory - we've never exchanged blows before and yet you presume to know all about me?? Therefore I deduce you are a multi acting for someone else. But I will indulge you all the same just because you "demanded" a reply. My club is a Melbourne club, but it's neither city or victory. I was born and raised on the Mornington, worked as a PE teacher in several Victorian schools from Sorrento up, and lived football for 35 years in and out of school. In Victoria that wasn't easy in those days. Early retirement brought me north for the weather and my health, just before the A League was formed and while the NSL was melting down. So my "other club" plays in NPLQ nowadays but yes, I follow Roar out of convenience plus they're easy to like - they're the closest big team but I also have a soft spot for Glory as Ma was from Perth. So what's my issue with Victory you say? Well if you want to see nsl type behaviours in a HAL Club look no further than MVFC, a club that looks after its own self interests even if they damage the game itself. Just like certain nsl clubs did and look how that ended. There's a long list but let's stay recent; think back to the disgust Victory and their supporters had over a certain SFC player and his antics, role forward only a few short months and the double standards where we have Kalfhalla kicking a player (and the club defends him), Berisha kicking a player (and the club defends him), and Georgevski slapping a fan (and the club defends him). The players act like thugs on the pitch and deliberately target opponents for injury, good old fashioned thugs football. MVFC behave as if they are a law to themselves, and that's not good and it never ends well, and victory will continue to behave as those nsl clubs before them did until eventually it will all explode in their face, last time it brought a whole competition down !! tick .... tick ..... tick goes the ticking time bomb

Missing one or two players should not translate to one half of good football. This has been the consistent theme.

Fuss - quite an incredulous story, if indeed your brother passed away you also have my condolences. However your posts show regularly that you care not for the feelings of others nor do you have empathy for how they may be feeling!

Bob.Can you explain to me why so much hatred for my club?Is it because Berisha left your club?Is it our 27.000 membership? Is it that we made a profit last season? If you give me a reasonable explanation I will retract my statement how pathetic you are and also apologize for calling you that Greek word.We acknowledge that we had a crap year.Cant you just enjoy your win on friday night.

Yep here comes your narrative for the future years. You must be on about the elimination final? I've even said they were all nervous, no one could hold the ball. Broich also said they have no idea what happened. We won the game..........you can't be a choke if you win. Brisbane is probably the last team you can say chokes in pressure......seriously? have you seen the 3 Grand Finals where we never scored first or before the 84th minute? That's pressure. On your logic MV, the trophy holders, choked by allowing 2 goals in the 6 minutes of a final after going up 1-0 with 8 minutes left. I'm talking about your narrative on the last round of the season in Melbourne. LOL. Are you missing a beat today or what? The game you have said a dozen times was apparently all 2nd stringers to make the draw more dramatic. As I've said.......MV celebrated the draw harder than any win they had all season. I understand that........it was Brisbane. And you said you don't follow other teams...............it's good to know you know exactly what Broich said.

I don't consider that team a 2nd string youth team. That's Fussball exaggerating for effect. Let's not pretend otherwise. Brisbane shouldn't have put themselves into a position of having to win in Melbourne to do it. We had easier games during the season where we dropped points. Not like we didn't play. We dominated. Our first half on Friday was a worse performance. McKay will be feeling it though for what he missed in the 3rd minute or so. I am gutted though. No need to worry about that.

The problem is more the total reliance on top quality players in the middle of the park. MV used to get killed when Milligan was missing. It was pretty much the same this year when Valeri was missing. It's no coincidence that MV were at their best prior to December when Valeri was playing, then had their best A-League game in 2016 on Friday night when he was starting among a full-strength side for the first time this year. He is still getting to match fitness and Brisbane got into the game as he started to tire.
