Roar produce A-League miracle over Victory

By Vince Rugari / Wire

Brisbane Roar have done it again, clawing back from a goal down with just minutes remaining to beat Melbourne Victory 2-1 and keep their A-League finals hopes alive.

In yet another enthralling and unpredictable finals clash at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, the Roar looked gone for all money when former fan favourite Besart Berisha scored from an 86th-minute corner to give the reigning champions the lead.

But as they have done so many times before, the Roar produced a comeback for the ages in front of 20,157 fans.

A minute after Berisha’s goal, Brisbane captain Matt McKay levelled the scores, managing to get a toe on a cross from Dimitri Petratos and guiding the ball past Victory gloveman Lawrence Thomas.

Then, veteran Thomas Broich rose highest to head home a corner kick from Corona with just one minute of added time remaining.

The Roar will now face second-placed Western Sydney Wanderers next weekend at Pirtek Stadium, and the winner will move through to the A-League grand final.

For Victory, their season is over.

A week on from frustrating the Roar out of Premiers’ Plate contention in a scoreless stalemate at AAMI Park, they received a taste of their own medicine.

Melbourne completely bossed the first half, taking 10 shots to Brisbane’s zero, but went into the break with nothing to show for it.

It seemed as if the occasion might have gotten to the Roar’s usually slick midfield unit, which struggled to string together passes and repeatedly coughed up possession, with veteran Corona surprisingly the biggest culprit.

Victory’s dominance continued into the second half, but a second yellow card to Jason Geria in the 83rd minute reduced them to 10 men and swung the momentum Brisbane’s way.

I think Muscats point about stats some what true. But not going in 1 or 2 up at half time was the error. and the only stat that matter is the ball in the back of the net. The roar were horrible Melbourne pressed and the roar mid -field gave the ball away time and time again. Its not like the roar haven't been pressed like that before. It probably not until the 60 min that the roar stated playing. The Roar were going to push till the 94min because they never have lost a finals game in Brisbane and they have always scored at the death. Georgievski is a drop kick the kids was stupid in his actions but he was a stupid foolish kid. Georgievski shouldn't of pushed him about and to be honest he is a paid professional and should know better.

Thats my point JB. In fact our highest rate of posession all season was 69% against the nix for a 0 - 0 result. The possession stats i think are helpful in highlighting this sort of issue and make it clear that, as you say, and has been commented on by many during the year, that at times for all roars possession they have been ineffective. The stats simply hight areas for further investigation of what was going on.

Oh please, how many times above did you write the phrase 'choking' and 'youth squad' to create a new narrative? You'll be using that next season no doubt. Now MV 'scraped' into the finals………you made it by 7 points. That's not scraping. When you are emotional you exaggerate. You were defending Premiers and Champions, with the ultimate squad. Yet MV finished 6th.

Oh spare us the youth team garbage. Now the whole team was plucked from the youth squad apparently. That's football remember. Your best of the best - the self proclaimed ultimate squad apparently - couldn't beat us playing crap for 60 minutes 48 hours ago. MV only beat our cubs team last season with the incorrect penalty in the box decision from Valeri going over in the box.

TK - You can play around with statistical analysis for as long as you want but there is one inescapable fact that will emerge,no amount of POSSESSION will guarantee a win in a game whereas if PENETRATION is achieved out of that POSSESSION then the chances of SCORING GOALS increases exponentially and scoring MORE goals than your opponent is still the only way to win a game.Cheers jb

Waz - The truth is that you don't need to wonder about Roar's line ups, they are coming out almost the same every week, win ,lose, or draw. You are right,Tommy Oar doesn't look comfortable on the right and why he is played there again after last week is a question that has to be posed. My suggestion that Borello should be used there is not so based on how well the kid has been playing but he has a defensive work rate in him that allows Hingert to attack the right flank more often than he was last night.,and as long as Petratos is being played as a right sided attacking midfielder, a hard working (in defence") winger has to be used. That is another area in which we have to see Tommy prove himself. You ask what should be done next week and I take it you have read Corona's comment where he stated he is not a defensive mid-fielder but has been asked to play there. Any Roar fan who knows anything about the game would agree with him completely, the man neither has the physique or tackling talent to ever be a successful ball winner. McLaren is so isolated up front that his effectiveness is almost halved because of that same isolation.Someone has to be allocated the job of supporting him in the penalty area where he constantly is policed by at least 2 or 3 defenders. This is where Broich and Henrique could be used with effect when the initial "pace" comes off the game, but over the last 3 games it has become obvious Thomas is finding "early pace and attention" sees him kept out of the game by "lesser" players, who later in the game, cannot live with him and his undoubted talent. I know these are some of the questions you too would like answered but there is only 2 games left in which to "try things". This should have been done long ago. Cheers jb.

Lionheart - You pose a good question here when you ask who is at fault when a bad pass is made ,is it the passer or the lazy runner.? You could get more than a few answers to this questions and all I can say is that a good playmaker is so adept at ball control that he has supposed to have time to lift his head and KNOW where the player he is trying to set up is, or should be. I didn't get that feeling ;last night as ball after ball was not passed into a space where a runner should have been but directly to an opponent and I'm afraid that can only be described simply as a BAD pass, and that cannot be blamed on anyone else other than the "passer". Now last night Petratos elected to cross a ball hard and low with the result Mattie got the all important equaliser. Now I would hazard a guess that that "hard low cross" was one of not too many we have seen this season when it is so noticeable that Roar are not over supplied with players who can be counted to win a cross ball in the air ,other than at set pieces when the tall timber can be brought forward from the backline. The second goal was a tremendous spectacle but was probably the first header on target all night and it was made by a man who has only scored twice this season, and who admitted in today's press it was a jump he made in desperation.so it could be argued that there was just a little luck in that great win. Cheers jb

Lionheart -Have just watched the City v Perth game and oddly enough, noted that both Covic and Sorensen consistently kicked long balls out towards their wings with more than a few going out of play.Did you see this game and note the same thing?. Cheers jb

I think you'll find the generation that grew up in the 1960s & 70s were more involved in Civil Rights, Women's Rights & anti-war than any generation since then

You're also from an age where homophobia, racism and sexism were 10 times worse than they are now. Let's not look to that generation for good ideas.

Agree wholeheartedly Waz. The ball shouldn't have been allowed to drop to head height, and wouldn't have if just one defender had attacked it. JA should watch replays of that goal, and then have our absent defenders do likewise.

You 'ate McKay humble pie'...? Priceless.....but so did many of us in the stands. For 70 mins his first touch was ordinary, could not buy an accurate pass and after his needless early yellow card he could not go into 50/50 challenges hard. But then he made a run from very deep and equalised, beating DelPierre ( who otherwise had a cracking game at the heart of the defence...). Jeez the Roar cannot afford another 45mins like that first stanza.....

Hey mate, you saying Brisbane are going to go past us Wanderers and AU are going past City/Glory? Or was that a call for any of the remaining teams to do you a solid one and take out Adelaide :)

Bro, that is out of order on many levels. So one punk acts in a childish manner....but if the player struck him it would be criminal assault, the FFA would ban him for a very long period, and it is also morally indefensible for any adult to strike a child. What age are you living in.....?

Ha! I'd say I won't back Brisbane in the ACL... but they never qualify. And, when they do qualify, they embarrass the A-League. Of course, Brisbane could've qualified for ACL2017 but they couldn't beat the MVFC youth squad who had never played together at A-League level.
