The weekly chopping block rant

By Ron Swanson / Roar Guru

Time to shape up or shake hands with the NSW Cup coach for…

The Burgess twins
Not sure which one is producing knock-ons, poor off-loads or being lazy in defence so I’ll put the pair of them on notice. Joey Johns had a pot shot at Adam Reynolds looking like he was on a treadmill the other night, but this pair are on the stationary bike, such is their lack of speed or aggression at the defensive line.

Unleash them on a night on the boozer in Cairns and sending nude selfies and order will be restored. If not, say G’day to Greg Florimo and the Bears NSW Intrust Cup coach for a month or two.

Tyrone Roberts
The Titans looked slick in attack last weekend against a tougher opponent and game against the Sharks at Shark Park. The return of the underwhelming Roberts looked to stifle the attack and young Ash Taylor didn’t look the player he was during his absence.

The show and go is now a play all defences can read and, for mine, he has little to offer both now and in the future. Stick with Taylor and Cullen or watch the promising start slowly dissipate in the blink of an eye, Mr Henry.

Robbie Farah
Made some good metres out of dummy half, but failed to direct or influence his young halves pairing who continued with ridiculous bombing tactics throughout yesterday’s clash. The fact they have not won a game since his return will not go unnoticed once Matt Ballin is fit and raring to go.

Farah could look at how Michael Ennis takes over with kicking on last tackle options for the Sharks, but I can’t imagine he could stomach watching his arch nemesis for pointers. Nathan Peats’ form and bruising defence should be applying the blowtorch if Farah wants another crack at Origin.

Jarrod Croker
For all the early season back slapping, the Raiders still have an elephant in the room: Croker’s poor defensive reads and technique. Targeted by the Sharks on Sunday, it appeared every time they went down his side they would come up with plenty of metres or points. A trip to the Mounties won’t happen but it should, though they gave up a 36-0 lead on Sunday and hung for dear life and a 36-32 victory.

Trent Hodkinson
Hodkinson has been anonymous, save for last weekend’s victory over the Tigers. The Knights, like the Tigers, have a pair of gun halves biding their time in the lower grades, and if they are not careful, clubs like the Dogs or Dragons could make a play to poach them. Picking the pair would bring a tear to the eye of old Wests Magpies fans.

Mark down the names Lamb and Cogger. Coach Nathan Brown is blooding so many youngsters, he may as well give this young duo a crack at some point.

Jono Wright
I must admit to being a little harsh on the winger’s Warriors career. But if I was a rival coach and looked at the team lists to see this laterally challenged fella on the flank, I’d run plays all week at training knowing I will be exposing his defensive skills, handling skills in the air and bank on 2-3 major errors per game.

Who could forget last year’s clanger at home to the Roosters dropping a field goal attempt under no pressure? Unlike Manu Vatuvei, who scores as many as he lets in, Jono is way in the negative for tries conceded as opposed to points he scores or creates. Put it this way, you wouldn’t be shocked to see Sam Perrett or even Preston Campbell outleap Jono, even though he’d have the advantage of an extra metre in height.

I could not find a starting spot for either Wright or Jeff Robson in the NSW Cup side, yet they are in the run-on side for the Warriors.

Players also on notice depending on how they travel this week include Jordan Rankin, Tim Lafai, Kodi Nikorima, Akuila Uate, Tim Browne and Luke Keary.

So get on the bandwagon Roarers and give me the brutal truth on who else or who doesn’t deserve to be preparing for a clash at Ringrose Park, Bear Park or Mt Smart No.2 this weekend or next.

And he goes and does what, McFadden, names Jono on the bench, I mean who will quiver in their boots with he off the bench, a lame winger. Hurrell, Tevaga, Roche HELLO, anyone home under that Cap, Cappy?!?!?

GI.. Seriously. Wakes up once every few weeks for a minute or two. Stays down injured every time he stuffs up (after having a peek at what he's done) and does no better at origin level than Morris, but gets all the praise in the world for it because he's a maroon...supposedly

Yep ! I'd keep Carter, Grevsmuhl & the old man Burgess, and punt the rest of the forwards ! Inglis is either injured or uninterested , Cody Walker at least has a go , as does Teddy Goodwin's kiddie, but you punt the rest of the backs as well.

Yes agree or better still a hard well directed throw of the steeden that pings off George directly onto Tom's melon, so long as it's better directed than Josh Reynolds launch at Liicha at the Cake Tun. Jono Wright makes Darryl Halligan look like Eric Grothe Snr, such is his impact at bending the defensive line.

The younger Burgii were terrible. When George dropped his third consecutive simple pass, all his team mates including Sam came up and patted him on the head saying "don't worry" "it's only a game" and whatever other platitudes serve in such an occasion. Surgess and Gurgess would be better served by Sam taking a leaf from Josh Reynolds book and giving George a god almighty spray. Surely there's some way to rev the big fella up. Getting screamed at by Roadkill every week isn't doing it. Jono Wright - for how big he is he's the softest runner in the NRL. I don't know what's going on with GI's knee but he's grimacing and looking ginger every time he gets tackled. Now he's avoiding getting tackled altogether. He really could do with a season off and getting his knee and possibly his attitude sorted. Such a shame.

Hey Max, I was at that Gosford game as well you mentioned with my 5 year old daughter. We moved to the corner that he scored that try in. She was sad last night when I tried to explain to her he won't play again this year. Ended up saying he broke his leg real bad. I just hope McFadden doesn't recall Robson or he will take up 95% of next weeks "Chopping Block" rant. Surely Tevaga or Roache take the utility spot with Hingano injected at some point of the season in the 14. That kid is something else.

Maybe put him on the wing and re-sign Joel Reddy from Dapto to play in the No.1

Feliti threatened the line at times against Mounties on Sunday but was contained reasonably well. He also seemingly threatened a touchie after one of his cut outs was ruled forward, with the subsequent scrum converted to a penalty once the man in pink had warned him to shut it a couple of times and he just simply couldn't contain himself. He also threw a couple of roundies following a late tackle that left Billy Moore and Dave Barnhill giggling. How he wasn't binned left the Bruce Stadium faithful bemused, but downright filthy when it was Mounties that were penalised. Anyway, Feleti aside, the Eagles comeback led by Peter Godinet was scarcely believable. Was 36-0 at the 58 minute mark, and for want of an errant pass on a last gasp blind side play, Manly may well have come away with the points. Further, Manly likely to pick Williame following his six tries in his last two outings to replace the injured Jorge, but Peter Schuster could be an option as well. He was elusive at fullback for the ressies, and safe under the high ball -- perhaps safer than Taufua. And is there anyone not familiar with Wiiliame's strike rate in first grade?

GI is too lazy to want to play anywhere but FB unless it's Origin or for Australia.

No cheap shot it's commonly known Manu is Rocks and Diamonds. With Wright it's just Rocks! Sadly when the Beast goes into to smash someone nowadays we are left without him for 2-3 weeks and have to put up with a winger who makes Joel Reddy look like Semi Radradra!

I liked Godinet at the Warriors, under rated player, a little suspect in defence, it must be noted.

I saw. Godinet the best dummy ever in the history of either code!!! Far too clever for Metro Cup.

Cheap shot at Manu. Manu is a lot better than people think he is. I've got no doubt he does more good than bad. Manu got man of the match last Anzac test comparing him to Wright is nonsense. If Uate played Origin so would have Manu.

Playing in the NSW Cup, where he belongs! His side trailed the Mounties 36-0 at lemons on the weekend, though they mounted a serious comeback going down 36-32.

I'd move him into the centres, Johnston at the back, Auva'a to Bear Park for a fair period. Or drop Keary, GI to No.6, Cody Walker could play in the No.1. Forwards need to aim up though, all moves are pointless if that doesn't occur. They need Carter each week. Sure he tries too hard at times but at least he has some fire and aggression along with Grevsmuhl. The rest are in need of some angry pill's!
