Highlights: Widdop inspires Dragons win over Roosters

By James MacSmith / Roar Guru

Boyd Cordner’s much anticipated return has failed to lift Sydney Roosters off the bottom of the NRL ladder, the Tricolours falling to a Gareth Widdop inspired St George Illawarra 20-18 at Allianz Stadium on Monday.

Widdop’s first half kicking on Anzac Day before 34,483 fans helped put the Dragons out to a 18-0 halftime lead.

The Roosters were the better side in the second half but couldn’t make the most of their opportunities.

A controversial penalty goal from an alleged late tackle on Mitch Rein by Roosters prop Kane Evans was the difference between the sides.

The Roosters are now 1-7, the win was the Dragons fourth of the year in a game dominated by dropped ball and lacklustre play.

During the early softening up period the only score was a Gareth Widdop penalty in the 10th minute.

In the 21st minute Widdop toed through a spilt ball from Latrell Mitchell and pounced on the Steeden in the in-goal for the game’s opening try.

The Dragons went further ahead five minutes later when Jason Nightingale dived on another Widdop kick.

Kalifa Faifai Loa intercepted a loose pass from debutant playmaker Ryan Matterson two minutes before the break and raced 70m untouched for the Dragons to lead 18-0 at the break.

Jake Friend crashed over soon after the restart for the Roosters’ opener before Evans offended allowing Widdop to put the home side out to 20-6.

But then the Roosters came charging home through tries to Latrell Mitchell in the 58th minute, and Ryan Matterson in the 75th.

Roosters prop Dylan Napa was put on report for a high tackle on Taane Milne to give the Dragons some breathing space with two minutes on the clock.

The Roosters had one last chance on the stroke of fulltime but their side-to-side movement was finally shut down by the Dragons.

Roosters prop Sam Moa was put on report for a shoulder charge on Widdop.

Tricolours interchange forward Eloni Vunakece was also on report for a crusher tackle.

I disagree with your anti James Maloney comments. Maloney's record with Easts T G FG 2013 9 108 - Premiers 2014 5 106 2 Minor Premiers 2015 9 94 2 Minor Premiers "He was a huge contributor to our high error count." You say. But as the above table discloses HE WAS A HUGE CONTRIBUTOR TO OUR SUCCESSES. With his quality goal kicking & game management we would certainly be higher than 2 competition points in 2016 with him in the team. At Cronulla he has displaced J Bird at 5/8,Cronulla seem to tolerate his "low percentage plays" as you put it. You must attend their training sessions to say "add to that he’s a bit of a pest for the coaching staff. Are you an insider of the club?

I can understand the players and coaches in the heat of a post match but fans need to chill, We've had plenty of good viewing post millennium and things don't always go your way. We are understandably struggling with too many young decision makers. Everyone hoped for better cohesiveness in defence to get us through but it isn't there. I think Mitchell took more poor options plus some skill errors than Hastings. The dart on the overlap was a brain explosion but he had plenty of good moments to go with it.

Glad to see someone is paying attention. McGreggor did hire an attack coach, so one must ask “What the hell’s he doing?” Saints have had a number of line breaks where support players are in the next post code. Their kick-chasers are not even close to getting the ball before their opponents when short ones are put in close to the try line. When the Broncos or The Cows break the line, there are half a dozen players lining up to receive the ball, and when a kick is put in it becomes a tight contest as to who lays their hands on the pill first. As Baz said, the Saints cannot seem to find space when they move the ball. When defensive lines constantly rush up, a solution can often be a well placed short kick. Performed early in the game, nothing works better at taming the backs who are constantly in your face as you receive the ball. The Dragons need to create doubt, At the moment there’s nothing for defensive sides to work out.

By "disagree" what do you mean? The 11 words in parenthesis? the first paragraph on management not being omniscient? their view of hastings? or that we could keep a spare first grade half on the bench without stunting his growth or encouraging him to leave the club? As to "gambles" I thought it was self evident he often took low percentage plays. He was a huge contributor to our high error count. Watch the games during our losing streak last year often we would be building pressure and Maloney would do things like force a pass onto a player about to get hit, try to take an intercept late in the count, do the no look pass when just taking the tackle would do etc. His successes are always visible but his failures take a closer look, add to that he's a bit of a pest for the coaching staff.

Mitchell needs to spend some time on the bench or with Wyong. Robinson needs to drum into him that the game isn’t about him getting on the highlight reel but playing the percentages and that he is held accountable.

Good to see Widdop bounce back after hitting rock bottom a couple of weeks ago. I'd still have some concerns if I was a Dragons fan (more than just being a Dragons fan). Against the Titans the three tries came from a Widdop solo effort, a kick and a kick that rebounded off the post. This week the Dragons three tries came from Mitchell dropping a bomb, a kick and an intercept. I know it doesn't matter how you get them - they're all worth four points...but the Dragons are still battling to create tries, line breaks and space through their ball movement. The Dragons tries from kicks have been generally well executed but there's always an element of luck with them. They've also failed to score a try in the second half of both of their last two games, with second half field goal and penalty goal against the Titans and Roosters respectively the only scoring plays of their second halves. I still have massive question marks over McGregors coaching ability. They have a lot of good attacking players but no structure or effective set plays in their attack.

Why can you just not except defeat Roosters? Hastings took some wrong options that is what cost them, not the officials.

Disagree What do you mean by "who gambles as well", Maloney's influence at Cronulla is very visible.

Roosters bottom of the table and their fans complaining about the referee after a 2 point loss? Gee, didn't see that coming.

Maloney was let go because we thought we'd have Mitchell Pearce and didn't know that Hastings would have a hamstring injury to start the season (so should have been goal kicking in those close losses). If the management team are of the view that Hastings is a potential top 5-10 half then you can't keep paying Maloney and keep him (who gambles as well - Pearce is the guy we are missing) as another team will simply come in and offer him a starting role. You can't keep a first grade half on the bench.

Lattrell's Thinking (DT p62) was on the blink, in keeping with East's season of utter discontent. Jake Friend delivers a game each week which exceeds the measurement of excellence. He is the best rake I have seen since Dr George Peponis. He truly is DM material.

I don't support either team Mr Big but your first 2 tries should not have been given. One came off a set where there was a BLATANT forward pass. The second was from a knock on not a kick. In regards to your late tackle .. I agree it was not late however it was high and same result.

I am an Easts supporter. We cant blame the referee. Think L Mitchell's dropped ball, erratic passing and general mistake rate. Think J Hastings ignoring a 3 man overlap and going himself. Both players need to improve their mistakes and game management. J Friend, B. Cordner were outstanding. Why was J Maloney let go?

Wet weather had a big outcome on the game But the Bunker once again was very inconsistant with shocking decisions, how late is a late tackle?. The NRL has let its fans down again, they have the technology but it seems they only want to use it to keep Kentucky Fried Chicken happy, what dissapoints me is the thousands of punters, who put up good hard cash dont get an even playing field, the roosters were robbed and the red v very lucky. Peirce cannt get back fast enuff
