CEO Pourre departs Brisbane Roar

By Vince Rugari / Wire

Brisbane Roar fans have been assured the A-League club will continue to run smoothly despite the departure of the man who almost single-handedly guided them through their financial crisis last year.

Chief executive David Pourre has resigned from his role at the Roar to take up a new opportunity outside of the sports industry.

But Pourre will stay on as a member of a new advisory board and also help install a new CEO, chairman Rahim Soekasah said in an e-mail to members.

Pourre was instrumental in keeping the club on an even keel while solving the Roar’s huge financial and administrative problems, which had put the club on the brink of liquidation less than 12 months ago.

“He has specifically provided clear, honest and open communication to myself and the owner about all matters relating to the club,” Soekasah said.

“Specifically, he invited the leaders within the FFA to gain access to all club related matters for the purposes of transparency and restoring our credibility with the games governing body.

“It was vital for me to ensure we kept David as part of our club because his efforts and commitment are highly valued.”

Soekasah said Pourre would continue to assist the club’s owners, Indonesian conglomerate the Bakrie Group, in communication with FFA and the other A-League club chairmen.

Pourre will be joined on the Roar’s advisory board by former Matilda and London-based pundit and columnist Alicia Ferguson, and real estate executive Robert Cavallucci, with other appointments to be made in future.

The advisory board won’t assume any responsibilities for the “fiscal and regulatory compliance” of the club, Soekasah said, which will remain the sole responsibility of owner Nirwan Bakrie.

Ben - I don't think there is anyone who would disagree with your observation as to how the Roar team performed last season and if David Pourre contributed to that in any way he deserves huge praise as you suggest, but now he is no longer going to be there on a day to day basis and so cannot be expected to act as a constant go-between (or buffer) between top management and football management so cant see how the overall "present situation" is going to be improved,we will surely have to wait until a new CEO is put in place before making judgements. Waz- As I said to you and other staunch supporters last week, don't worry, just go with the flow and let what will happen, happen, for the blunt truth is there is very little any "Suncorp regular" can do to change the workings in the upper management team structure. The fact remains that whether David Pourre is "hanging around" as a member of a new innovation, "an advisory board" is inconsequential,he will no longer be involved in the day to day workings of the club and without being cynical one can only wonder as to his real reasons for "moving on". As someone has said, the man is a professional administrator and there is little doubt he will be making a decision based on what he considers his immediate future. The members E-mail says all the right things and that is to be expected,so the only question arising is to speculate as to how the appointment of an "advisory board " is going to affect the overall running of the club, for to the cynical it could be construed as a move back to an old fashioned committee style of management and in my opinion that type of advisory management (suggestion without responsibility) is a backward step for any professional sporting identity, never mind the Roar with it's deep underlying problem, no real measurable fiscal assets to show after an 11 year existence. Cheers jb

Given the off-field distractions, the Brisbane Roar did a great job of performing as well as they did throughout the season. From what I can gather as an outsider, David Pourre can take a fair slice of the credit, particularly in insulating the playing group from the back-office shenanigans.

It's always hard to have confidence in the administration of this club but yes, the fact he's staying around and not running for the hills (hopefully) says something. I copied the content of the Chairmans email below which does everything except perhaps nail the rumours that Simon Hill and others were alluding to last week.

Here's the full members email from this morning: Good Morning Members, Now that the Hyundai A-League (HAL) Season has drawn to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members, sponsors and fans for the support you have given our entire club this year. Having arrived at the club just prior to the commencement of the HAL season, my fellow owner’s representative, Mr. Demis Djamaoeddin and I were very disappointed with the position the club was in and we appreciated the honest and direct feedback that our members and fans provided us during our forums. The owner, Mr. Nirwan Bakrie set a plan in motion to recapitalize the club during the season. Throughout the year, updates were provided on his progress as the owner wanted to ‘right the wrongs of the past’. Our HAL team led by Head Coach, John Aloisi, achieved what many at the start of the season thought wouldn’t be possible – reaching the finals. To come so far and lose the semifinal against a tough and respected opposition away from our home was difficult for everyone however, we will learn and move forward stronger next season. Our Westfield W-League team came so close to achieving a berth in this season’s Grand Final in what was an epic game in Melbourne. My congratulations to our W-League Head Coach Belinda Wilson and all the team for another wonderful season. The future players of our club who play within the Foxtel National Youth League had a solid year just missing out on qualifying for the Grand Final under a changed competition format. This area of our club will continue to strengthen under the guidance of our Youth Coach Josh McCloughan being over seen by John. I’m more than comfortable that our future is bright and in good hands. I would like to especially acknowledge our administration team, community team, volunteers and all who support our club. No words can truly describe how grateful I am for their contributions and efforts. My sincere thanks and gratitude. Throughout the course of the year, the club’s CEO, David Pourre, set a course that has seen our club regain credibility within the community and strengthen within the eyes of the football world. He has specifically provided clear, honest and open communication to myself and the owner about all matters relating to the club. Specifically, he invited the leaders within the FFA to gain access to all club related matters for the purposes of transparency and restoring our credibility with the game’s governing body. Throughout the year, David has been assisting me in building the foundations of an Advisory Board that will support the off-field operations of the club. This includes our government relationships, corporate and commercial relationships and improving the clubs governance. The Advisory Board is supported by the FFA. The owner of the club, Mr. Nirwan Bakrie, acknowledges this Advisory Board will be an important connection to the Brisbane football and business community, and a great source of local knowledge. The Advisory Board will not assume any responsibilities for the fiscal and regulatory compliance of the Brisbane Roar, which remain the sole responsibility of the owner, Mr Bakrie. It’s with regret that I wish to inform you that David Pourre will no longer serve as CEO of Brisbane Roar FC. David is an accomplished professional and has chosen to take up an attractive offer outside of the sports industry. We respect and understand the reasoning for his decision, and thank him wholeheartedly for his sterling service to the Brisbane Roar as CEO. David will remain involved with the club as he has agreed to be part of the Advisory Board. In that role, David will assist me in the appointment of a new leader to ensure the club’s operations continue to run efficiently. David will be a crucial member of the Advisory Board and will assist me with discussions between the FFA and other Hyundai A-League Club Chairman’s. It was vital for me to ensure we kept David as part of our club because his efforts and commitment are highly valued. The composition of the New Advisory Board will be announced shortly and will be comprised of individuals from a diverse background of corporate and professional sports administration. I would like to introduce and welcome our first members; Robert Cavallucci Robert is the Queensland lead and Director of PwC’s Real Estate Advisory practice. Robert is an experienced Real Estate executive who has managed large private property development companies and held senior Government positions over the last 18 years and currently sits on several private and not-for-profit boards. Robert’s core ability is in delivering design, construction and development projects across all asset classes of the highest quality, based on an innovative and technical approach. Robert’s core values are based on strong relationships and he uses expertise and experience to inspire a commitment to project excellence. As a former Assistant Minister in Government, Robert worked closely with Federal, State and Local Governments, Ministers and Directors General across departments. Robert has significant experience working with local government planning authorities to deliver best project outcomes in line with client objectives and held positions on local government boards to deliver economic outcomes through improved local planning and stakeholder engagement. Qualifications: • BSc - Bachelor of Science, University of Queensland • MBA - Master of Business Administration • Member – Urban Development Institute of Australia • Member – Property Council of Australia Alicia Ferguson Brisbane born Alicia was a Matilda who played as a forward and then transitioned to become one of Australia's most respected midfielders. We've been assured of lots of things in the past....this isn't the kind of squad renewal i was hoping for! Never met the CEO but he obviously did enough good work to keep the ship afloat last season after the previous annus horribilis. The fact that he is prepared to stick around should give us some comfort that he hasn't just found a huge crack in the hull and is heading for the nearest lifeboat.
