Mogg leads Montpellier to Challenge Cup

By News / Wire

Australian Jesse Mogg has scored two tries to lead Montpellier to a 26-19 victory over England’s Harlequins in the European Challenge Cup final in France.

Replacement Mogg claimed the only try of the first half on Friday, crossing the line in the corner after a neat passing move by the French team, who secured their first victory in a major European competition.

Three Nick Evans penalties, however, kept Harlequins in the game against a side coached by South African Jake White and the English side trailed 13-9 at halftime.

Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis kicked eight points in the opening period and, after Mogg had caught a high kick to the right corner to grab his second try, the South African converted to stretch Montpellier’s lead to 20-9.

He notched two more penalties for Montpellier, while Marland Yarde’s late try was a mere consolation for Harlequins.

Defeat completed a depressing week for the London club, who were rocked by the death of their young prop Seb Adeniran-Olule in a car crash on Monday.

Mogg was good but it was the MOntpelier fly half Catrakilis who had a 100% kicking record and played well. however one cannot ignore the south african flavor in the french club. and its really amazing how Pirre Spies can go thru a game without really doing anything and still look like 1000 bucks :P

hey Rob - much bigger problem than the kicking is Toua. Probably the worst fullback in the whole Super rugby comp & a total liability for the Brumbies imo. You can't go far with a dud fullback. Mogg turned out to be a huge loss because he wasn't replaced with a high quality FB.

Can't wait for him to come home, the Brumbies kicking has been abysmal this season.

As a brumbies fan, Mogg was great when in form, but he was prone to the more than infrequent jitters. Sorry to have seen him leave but it's been good for his consistency.

He would have been a good inclusion in the Wallabies when Folau was hobbling on one leg, at 50% fitness.
