Melbourne City midfielder Aaron Mooy produced another assured performance in the Socceroos midfield on Friday as speculation about his future reached new heights.
Several leading European scouts were believed to have been in attendance at Sunderland’s Stadium Of Light where goals to Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney helped England to a 2-1 win over Australia.
Mooy won’t be deciding his club future until after the Socceroos’ two friendlies against Greece in Australia next month.
Belgian outfit Club Brugge lead a host of potential suitors from the UK and Europe looking to secure Mooy’s signature for next season and beyond.
He remains coy on where he’ll end up, but Mooy gave a strong indication after the England game that he’ll soon be on the move.
“I’m going to just focus on the Greece games first, after that I’ll sit down with Melbourne City and have a chat,” Mooy said.
“We’ll see what happens. You never know, we’ll see, I’m still contracted to Melbourne City.”
Mooy put in a strong shift alongside Mile Jedinak, Tom Rogic and Massimo Luongo who made up a Socceroos midfield diamond.
Despite the loss, Australia dominated in midfield enjoying 55 per cent of possession and forcing England to sit back and absorb pressure for large parts of the game.
“I thought we played really well, a good style that we want to play,” said Mooy.
“They caught us on the counterattack a few times – that’s what they’re very good at.
“That’s how (coach) Ange (Postecoglou) wants us to play: link up, don’t be too far away from each other and I thought that’s what we did for big parts of the game.
The Socceroos fly back to Australia on Sunday.
The next round of World Cup qualifying begins in September, by which time Mooy will likely be at a new club.
“There’s a smart club out there that’ll pick up a very, very good footballer for very cheap,” Postecoglou said of his talented midfielder.
“If they were any other nationality they’d probably already be playing at a big club.”

Bit of a hijack on this thread unfortunately but the following is not being widely reported (it's not VIC or NSWs so why would it). The FFA yesterday gave the Backries until 5 PM Monday (today) to respond to requests for clarity on the future of the club - initially it was reported as 7 days but revised down in latter reporting - the key questions seem to sit around the continued financial stability of the club, appointment of a new CEO and lack of business plan beyond the recent season which includes issues of no stadium deal in place for next season, membership sales not starting as planned, no significant commercial sponsors signed up for next season and an extremely thin administration team running the club. Yep. The way I saw the game against the Poms was that Rogic came out and was influential early. Mooy took a bit of time but worked himself into the game. Both were excellent. Mooy reminds me of Bresciano. Likes to hold the ball and trick & weave his way around opponents. If he comes anywhere close to Bresc then he'll have a great career. Fingers crossed as you say.
