Texas' domination of US sports

By Johny m / Roar Rookie

Texas loves sports and sports love Texas! You can’t follow sports and avoid Texas teams.

Whether it is football or basketball, Texas produces the greatest players and makes up one of the biggest markets for sports. How does Texas rank among other states though?

NFL
The NFL has 32 teams, two of which are in Texas. The Dallas Cowboys, also known as America’s team, is a dominant franchise.

Although they haven’t been at their best recently, the Dallas Cowboys still sell out the AT and T Center and are celebrated as a top ten team with the amount of championships they have won.

With five championships to their name, the Dallas Cowboys are an organisation with prestige. The Cowboys have been priced as the most valuable sports organisation in American football.

The Houston Texans, along with three other NFL teams, have never visited the Super Bowl. Yet, according to ESPN insiders, the Houston Texans are likely to win a championship in the next 20 years.

The Dallas Cowboys have also found popularity in other ways, off the field. The Dallas Cheerleaders are famous in their own right and many notable Cowboys players take key roles on sporting broadcast channels.

NBA
Texas is one of four states in the US that has more than one NBA team. The only state with more NBA teams is California.

The Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, and Houston Rockets are three dominant teams and they are all from Texas. Together, these three NBA teams have a record of eight championships.

Many notable famous San Antonio Spurs players include Tim Duncan, David Robinson, George Gervin, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginboli. These San Antonio Spurs players have led their five championships and have helped create the respectful franchise they are today.

With Dallas being a powerhouse in football and basketball, is it also important to remember the greatest accomplishments by other organisations as well such as the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, and FC Dallas!

No matter wherever you go in the nation, Texas will always be home to the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.

Only a Texan could come to this conclusion and ignore the state of New York and its championship pedigree with the NFL Giants (4 super bowls and 4 pre-super bowl championships) and Jets (1 super bowl) not forgetting the Bills and there run of 4 SB appearances in the 90's. NBA's Knicks (2 championships), NHL's Islanders (4 "consecutive" Stanley Cups) and rival Rangers (also 4 Stanley Cups) and of course the Sabres who similar to the Bills can get to a few finals without tasting victory. Then there's baseball with the Mets winning 2 Worlds Series and the team considered by Forbes to be the 3rd most valuable on planet earth, the New York Yankees and their 27 championships. And before anyone suggests the "Lone Star State" may have second place sewn up let's consider California. Home of the 49ers, Raiders, Golden State Warriors, SF Giants, Athletics, Angels, LA Kings and of course the LA Lakers.
