Match preview:

After a shock loss last week the Geelong Cats are primed to bounce back, but the new-look Carlton Blues will put up a mighty fight at Etihad Stadium. Join The Roar from 1:10pm (AEST) for live scores and rolling commentary.

I don’t think there was a person in the country who foresaw what happened to Geelong in the opening quarter last week. Torn apart from the get-go by a far more determined Collingwood outfit (where have you been?), the Cats played catch-up all day but were always going to be too far behind to close the gap. The game finished as one of the seasons most shocking upsets to date, and has perhaps shown a few chinks in the Cats’ armour.

On the other hand, disappointingly for their supporters, Carlton’s game went pretty much to script, as the ladder-leading North Melbourne ended the Blues’ four-game win streak quite comfortably to the tune of 67 points.

In stunning team selection news, Matthew Kruezer and Levi Casboult have both been named, making shock early returns from injury. Kristian Jaksch has also been named on an extended bench, which at the time of writing has not yet been whittled down to a final four.

The Cats have lost Daniel Menzel to soreness, while Tom Lonergan will make a welcome return. Billie Smedts, Jake Kolodashnij and Jordan Murdoch have also made the extended squad.

On paper, it looks like a fairly predictable match – we have one team at the beginning of a true rebuild against a genuine premiership contender at a neutral venue which both teams are familiar with. Recent history doesn’t help the Blues either; they haven’t beaten the Cats in six years, and copped an almighty hiding last time they met.

However, this Carlton team has already proven that they’re well and truly on the mend, already shirking the ‘easybeats’ tag before the season’s halfway point. The named team is certainly close to their best 22, a luxury they’ve not had in a long time. They’ll certainly need to lift their goalkicking accuracy (currently 17th in the comp) and tackling (last) if they’re going to be a shot, but there’s a lot of talent brewing down at the Blues, and they undoubtedly won’t go home without a fight.

The Cats were downright embarrassed on Saturday, and as always, we can only judge them on the response. For the second week in a row it was a story of missed chances, so it will be interesting to see how the Cats have worked on that throughout the week. Steven Motlop and Shane Kersten were in electric form before quiet games last week, and are two important players that need to return to that level and have a big say in this game’s result.

Right now, Geelong is far-and-away the better team – but you never quite know what might happen when they get out there.

Prediction
A comfortable but not-too-comfortable win for the Cats. Geelong by 41.

Will the Cats get their top-two aspirations back on track or will the Blues deal them a second straight loss? Join the Roar from 1:10 for all the action, and join in the discussion below!

Yes. I have been a long time critic of Murphy yet I must admit over the last five weeks he has been much tougher consistently. He has become far more defensive in his efforts.

Geelong aren't in that conversation.

Gibbs under have to be worth a punt for the brownlow given his form so far, especially in the last 6 weeks. Also I don't think it a coincidence that the blues started winning after Plowman came in yo the side.

Bad loss by Geelong. Almost handing top spot on a platter to Sydney.

Are the Blues better without Murphy?

Pre-season I put a bet on them to take the wooden spoon. Didn't see this coming. The better team by a mile today. If Geelong doesn't fix their goal kicking they're in huge trouble. Expecting some big changes to the team next week. Hoping for them, anyway.

Docherty is a gun. I didn't realise how young he is either, he's got potential to be a true Carlton favourite a la Kade Simpson.

It's the same old tale of another football match In Melbourne Town, In Melbourne Town. It's the same old pie and sausage roll, Same old bounce of the yellow Sherrin ball. It's the same old scrap of another footy match In Melbourne Town, In Melbourne Town. I'm not a Magpie or a Tiger I pull for Carlton, for Carlton, for Carlton. Walking with my blue scarf, yes, with my blue scarf, I will take the time to cheer with passion. I'm a loyal member, yes, I'm a member, Like my father and my loyal granddad. I hear the siren, That call the navies to come above. And with my scarf held high, I'm singing. I've got nothing but the Carlton Navy Love. We are the Navy Blues, We are the old, dark Navy Blues. We're the team that never lets you down. We're the only team old Carlton knows. With all the champions they like to send up, We'll keep our end up, And they will know that they've been playing Against the famous Old Dark Blues! And the match begins and the madness will ensue In Melbourne Town, in Melbourne Town, While I'm eating another Chiko Roll And a hot chocky, I'm getting very cold. After halftime I watch another Carlton goal In Melbourne Town, In Melbourne Town. I don't like Footscray or the Bombers, I pull for Carlton, for Carlton, for Carlton! There is the final siren, and how we smashed them, Don't know by how many, but we smashed them, I'm a happy member, a happy member, Like my father and my loyal granddad. Until the next round, I'll leave the G with my head above.

Credit where it is due. Carlton deserved this one. They have come a long way from that team that I said wouldn't win a game. Their pressure rattled us all day.

Brendan Bolton is just about the most important person in football right now. The turnaround at this club is nothing short of stunning.

One of our best wins in years. Well done Blues. Bolton has done a great job as coach. Docherty was courageous all day.

Sam Rowe has 15 one-percenters to his name, 9 more than the next best. He has absolutely embarrassed Hawkins since quarter time. Q4 30′ Carlton 16.8.104 Geelong 12.13.85

Simon White is another Blue who has played well beyond his ability today. He's been sensational. Could be very important going forward if he keeps this up. Q4 28′ Carlton 16.8.104 Geelong 12.13.85

BEHIND GEELONG The Cats finally get a break, where a long soccered ball by Caddy trickles through for a behind. So poor going forward after quarter time today. Q4 26′ Carlton 16.8.104 Geelong 11.13.79

They haven't stopped, either. Just peppering the goals at the moment, but the experienced Geelong heads down back are doing well to stem the flow. Too late though. Q4 25′ Carlton 16.8.104 Geelong 11.12.78

This is a brave and honest performance; one for the ages. We are down on rotations and to play like this is something to be proud of.
