Tigers down Bombers for Dreamtime win

By Jason Phelan / Roar Guru

Richmond’s AFL season continues to gain momentum, with the Tigers defeating Essendon by 38 points in their Dreamtime at the ‘G clash for their third win in a row.

Led by a standout performance by Dustin Martin on Saturday night, Richmond improved to a 4-6 win-loss record with a workmanlike 16.9 (105) to 10.7 (67) victory in front of 56,948 fans at the MCG.

Coach Damien Hardwick will gleefully bank the four premiership points but he perhaps won’t be quite so pleased when he reviews a few aspects of the Tigers’ performance.

Richmond looked set for a handy percentage-boosting win when they led the depleted Bombers by 28 points early in the second term but they went missing in patches and weren’t able to go on with the job.

Still, a win is a win.

Martin continued his stunning run of form with a career-high 38 possessions, while Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Brandon Ellis and Shaun Grigg were influential.

And after just two touches last week, Ty Vickery was much improved with three goals.

After leading by 16 points at halftime, the Tigers played some breathtaking football as they leapt out to a 36-point advantage.

But John Worsfold will have plenty of positives to point out to his players, perhaps most notably the way they fought out the game.

Brendon Goddard and David Zaharakis led the way for Essendon and youngster Darcy Parish continued to excite thanks to his eye-catching 25-disposal effort.

Essendon finished the game a man down on the bench after defender Michael Hartley suffered a hamstring injury in the third quarter.

My thoughts exactly. I don't know any Tigers' supporters who are that blinkered or misguided. My experience as a Richmond supporter is one of fleeting episodes of hope, but long periods of pessimism. Arrogance? Hardly.

Just clarifying Slane that most of my post was directed to people who think Richmond fans are in general arrogant, and not you of course. I agree with what you said.

"They do not in any way shape or form embody the Richmond supporter psyche." Yes Slane, that would be my guess too. I can't prove it because I normally only talk football with my two brothers and we are all very long-suffering Richmond fans (and we are anything but arrogant regarding our team!) I think the arrogance of most Richmond fans would have been knocked out of them a very very long time ago. As to the SEN talkback callers, well, they are a very very small sample size of Richmond followers. If they are honestly being arrogant (and not just hamming it up like K.B does), then something is definitely amiss with them (and I am saying "if they are" as I haven't listened to them enough to make a judgement call yet. I will start taking more notice of what they are saying now and see if I can detect an air of arrogance in what they say). How any Richmond follower could still be behaving arrogantly nowadays is absolutely beyond me. And big four sticks definitely comes across as being very suss in my book. :)

Floyd Calhoun: Mario from the Doncaster petrol station is an embarrassment. His hatred of North is pathological. The mighty North Melbourne F.C will end your belated charge to the final 8 this coming Friday. Richmond fans wonder why supporters of other clubs hate them. It is because Richmond are the biggest whingers in the competition. Go Roos. Big four sticks: Dream on. North in decline? We have lost one game. Haven't Richmond been in decline since 1981? Slane: I thought Richmond were a mighty juggernaut, a power house if you will. Hal: I think North will knock over the Cats in a few weeks. It could be three more losses coming your way. That would make five losses in a row.

FYI on the soap box on SEN Mario was on getting stuck into Norf (sic) and an angry North supporter called Andrew got stuck into Mario, saying everything that I have been saying about the arrogance of some Richmond fans.

I think Judd was great for Carlton but they got him because they over estimated where they stood at the time. Judd certainly worked better than Cousins at Richmond, and Dangerfield is working better at Geelong than Cousins at Richmond.

I get your point but that is not the collective voice I hear coming from the Tiger Army. Surely not all those minions are practicing the tactic of entryism. Trout is a real Richmond supporter. I worked with someone whose parents were friends with Trout. There is another guy on SEN who always rings up and says the rest of the AFL is on notice because it's Tiger time. Yes it is always the loudest who are the most arrogant. I have no idea about bfs but s/he is speaking with all the same hubris as the other clowns who are giving other Richmond fans a bad name.

I actually think 'big four sticks' is writing his comments with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek. I would be surprised if he barracked for the Tigers as his comments are clearly written to inflame. Likewise, KB, Mick Molloy, Trout, Mario and John are caricatures. They do not in any way shape or form embody the Richmond supporter psyche. You call Richmond supporters arrogant, but the reality is that 99% of us were fully expecting Richmond to 'pull a Richmond' in the last quarter and let Essendon back into the game. I don't think that is arrogance. I think it is depressing that with 8 minutes left on the clock and a 6 goal lead I still expect us to blow it.

Ahh Geelong. I see the Carlton Judd model in you. Just buy the best player in the competition and all your dreams will come true. Didnt work for them wont work for you but you will get the early draft picks as you slide down the ladder. Dangerfield is loverly to watch but you need a good coach and team to keep winning as we will see in the next three weeks.

Perhaps I would have sympathy if you didn't have K.B winding up his minions like Trout from Hillside, Mario from Doncaster, John from Croydon (who rings up and plays the theme song after every win), and big four sticks. I have no problems with supporters like you, but these other bozos are full of arrogance and hatred for other sides. K.B despises Geelong and Carlton. Trout and big four sticks despise Essendon or Essendoom as they both call them, and Mario despises Carlton and North, or as he mockingly calls them Norf. There is no modesty at Richmond. All I see is blinkered big four arrogance. Similar to Collingwood arrogance. Sorry Slane but I have some clubs I don't like, Hawthorn being the worst but Richmond is down there with Melbourne, Collingwood, West Coast, Freo, Adelaide, and the Port Adelaide front runners. I have sympathy for struggling clubs sans the big four arrogance. I don't hear this arrogance from Footscray or St Kilda. Surely, you as a rational, person are embarrassed by big four sticks' verbal diarrhea.

But Richmond is at its best nice or twice a season. There is no sustained culture of winning and the team too easily relaxes when ahead or turns up from last season expecting to win and gets belted. I'm sorry, I follow the team and they are going nowhere at the moment. Some good players but the whole system is not working.

I agree, Essendon have far better youngsters than Richmond. This current Tigers side is never going to get anywhere near a flag at this rate.

Didn't Geelong just break a 45 year premiership drought in 2007? You'd think a Cats fan would have a little more sympathy for struggling teams.

There is only one team you can't beat and that is Geelong. Geelong have had a 20 plus year dominance of Richmond.

Richmond at their best can beat any team. I wouldn't be surprised if they beat North on Friday night.

Another thing when Essendon get all their players back next year they will be streets ahead of Richmond

I totally agree bobbo7. Richmond will get smashed by North next week. The only time Richmond could beat North was when North rested half their side. I am sick of this Richmond arrogance. What have Richmond fans got to be arrogant about. No success since 1980.

Richmond are still rubbish. Any serious team would have belted Essendon in the final quarter. The Tigers turned off as only they can and that is why they will not go anywhere. No killer instinct and just happy with a ok win over an undermanned side. They might scrape into the final 8 but there is no point as they are nowhere near a top 4 side
