Bakries install new Roar managing director

By Vince Rugari / Wire

The Bakrie Group looks set to retain ownership of embattled A-League club Brisbane Roar after appointing an Australian-based managing director to replace departed chief executive David Pourre.

The managing director, who has not been named, will act as interim chief executive and commence in the role this week while the club seeks a permanent appointment as CEO, according to an FFA statement.

It’s understood the mystery director, who is not from Brisbane, is a businessman with a previous connection to the A-League and recently reached out to the Roar’s Indonesian owners during the club’s recent struggles.

The Bakries have also provided FFA with written commitment they will continue to fund the club, as well as provide a longer-term recapitalisation – doing so before the 5pm Monday deadline the governing body had set last week.

However, the threat of losing the club’s A-League licence still exists if the owners don’t follow through on their promises, which include providing around $500,000 in wages to players, coaches and staff by this month’s payday, June 15.

“Football Federation Australia (FFA) has received correspondence from the Bakrie Group in relation to the financial and management position of the Brisbane Roar FC,” an FFA spokesman said.

“The Bakrie Group has provided written undertakings on the timing and quantum of current funding of the club and the longer-term recapitalisation.

“The Bakrie Group has advised FFA that it has appointed an Australian-based Managing Director to the Brisbane Roar. This director will act as interim CEO and commence in the role this week while the club seeks a permanent appointment as CEO.

“Further, FFA is advised that the new Managing Director will work with an Advisory Board comprising of Brisbane business people in order to restore community confidence in the Brisbane Roar.

“FFA welcomes the undertakings from the Bakrie Group and expects they will be implemented without delay.”

The Roar has been stuck in a holding pattern since the club’s financial and governance issues resurfaced around a month ago, with coach John Aloisi and football director Craig Moore unable to plan for the new season due to a lack of funds.

Off-contract defender James Donachie and fan favourite Henrique have also left the club since their contracts expired at the end of May.

Waz This is an astounding offering with only one or two sentences making any sense so I went back and read my original offering on the subject to see if I could find anything that was in any way derogatory to anything you have written since and to be honest I could find nothing. On June 7th at 3.23 pm I did a simple arithmetic exercise that stated if $500,000 was to be used to pay out the wages for the month of June then the $2million promised would hardly stretch to the start of the new season,in fact the simple arithmetic says it should be used up by September 15th ,ie another 3 months wages. There was no attempt at calculating losses or gains, projected or otherwise, just a simple calculation that Peter Cotton in fact picked up on. At no time have I passed comment on your, or Peter's, analyses though I do appreciate that with the departure of Clut,Hervas,Lustica,Donnachie and perhaps Henrique off the wages bill there could be some cost savings that would affect my "simple arithmetic" calculation. The 2 new signings to pro contacts of the youngsters would have to be factored into those savings as well. Now to my final words on the subject. You will know that I use my own name when writing to this site and if ,as you say you find my comments "rude and condescending" then might I suggest when you see my name you just don't read what is written and to help I will no longer address any of my comments to you. That way we will both be happy. Cheers jb.

They do, from a PR perspective it's not been handled well. I've no idea what's right and what's not but it would have been better imo to keep Cobb's name out of the headlines and instead present it as "a consortium of Melbourne and internationally based business men" which would have nulled the gossip, another week or two of mystery surely wouldn't have hurt? Interestingly none of the press reports pick up on any of this gossip however it may be they're keeping their powder dry on the matter until the ownership changes hands in which case they'll have a story that just keeps giving lol. Let's see, the FFA are across this and were by all accounts lining the Bakries up for the bullet - let's just hope that doesn't result in rash decisions being taken.

for crying out loud jb, do you ever read what other people have posted first before replying? What I am finding bizarre (as mentioned in my earlier post) is that you're arguing over the players being paid monthly when that is not in dispute, everyone knows Roar staff are paid monthly and on the 15th .... and it's never been in dispute here! Why you keep coming back to something that's not in dispute is what I find bizarre! Is that what "thinkers" do, argue over something not in dispute lol? I have given you my analysis of the financial situation, Peter and I had a reasonably indepth discussion which you may have read, meanwhile you sit on the sidelines harping on about monthly payments, $6m losses for Roar, and questioning my objectivity with barbed insults, it does you no credit. Your tactical analysis of football games is often excellent but less so when it comes to finance matters. You said, by your understanding of the press story, that Roar needed $500k every month to keep afloat, which is equivalent to a financial loss of $6m which is inconsistent with the FFAs figures and their statements relating to losses at BR which are reported to vary between $500k and $2m per annum. I'm happy for you to maintain that position but without further input from yourself as to why you think that, there can be no discussion. And as for your later comment about "thinkers in the game" as far as I can tell you have done very little thinking on the finances of BR and if you have you haven't been willing to share it here. Quite frankly I find your approach to these discussions to be both rude and condescending, and not for the first time either, there's something about our discussions that inspires that for some reason?

Waz- What is bizarre about stating a team is paid monthly????It is a "general " comment made as part and parcel of how far $2million will stretch in keeping a football identity in the "black".There is no "arguing " taking place. I get the distinct feeling this crisis at Roar is affecting your objectivity.Rest easy. The FFA can't really let Roar go to the wall so there will be a Roar next season, but how they will be "set up" reamains a concern to "thinkers" in the game. Cheers jb

Evan - Your memory is playing some minor tricks with you.By 1986 the NSL had been split into 2 divisions and Lions finished eighth in their division failing to qualify for the play offs.Danny Wright and Steven Jackson were still playing with Lions.By 1987 Lions were dropped out of their second division as the league was reformed into one division. Lions did not take part but Alan Hunter had moved to Heidelberg who actually finished last in their division When 1988 came around Lions were again given a chance in the NSL but finished last and it was then there was an exodus of players to southern clubs,Jackson Wright and John Stewart all moving south wishing to stay in NSL football, for Brisbane City had aslo exited the NSL scene. It was not until 1991 that Brisbane again had a team in the NSL and it was not the Strikers but an identity known as Brisbane United but they only lasted 2 seasons and the Strikers gained entry in 1993. As I said by that time Lions were playing in the local league where they more than held their own but it was not until, 2004 that they again attempted professional football under the name Brisbane Roar. Cheers mate jb

If it's true, Wa, absolutely. The Net should always be treated with great caution. One person with an axe to grind can say anything with impunity. And they do, all the time.

Intersting. I always attributed their decline to what seemed like an unfair relegation in 1986 where they came mid table. (prior to that they were mid table in 85 and got finals football in 84) This resulted in the departure of players like Alan Hunter, Danny Wright and Steve Jackson and thus they weren't able to maintain their place in the NSL when they achieved promotion for the 88 NSL season. And with the adoption of the Brisbane United/Strikers for the NSL there was not much point in trying to get back into the NSL for Lions?

Real, I wont repost the link but it's all to do with a post on a customer feedback forum that says some pretty serious stuff. Then you role in the bankruptcy and you have your gossip. It very much depends on who he is working with - Peter Gome CEO at FFV has been linked to his syndicate for example which would go someway to offsetting fears about Daniels business practices if it's true. We are supposed to be told more tomorrow so let's see.

But I never said the players weren't paid monthly. So you're arguing over something I didn't say. Bizzare!

Evan -You actually touch on a very sensitive area when you try to analyse any bad administration that has gone on at Roar in their 11 year history. Suffice to say it is probably a tale left untold but it is a fact that in the mid 1980's their "embryo identity" was probably the most affluent football club, not franchise, but club, in the whole of Australian football with real estate assets and income earning properties in their portfolio. Since those days iit has all been "downhill" for the club, starting with their "banishment" from the then NSL in 1989 so the "record" actually goes back 26 years, not the 11 you mention. Cheers jb.

Waz - Where did I dispute your calculations, which YOU, not ME, stated was based on guesswork.??? .I was simply supplying a fact which you stated "everyone knows" in telling you the Roar wages are paid monthly, nothing more nothing less. I went on to do a bit of "guesswork" on my own attempting to analyse just how far $2 million would go in helping to solve Roar's problems and in no way was this denigrating any of your calculations. As I have said to you before I have no access to Roar's financial records and therefore have to take each news factor as presented and ally that to information I can glean from reliable sources. This I have found to be a tad more reliable than guesswork but like you have at times had to let my life experience take over. You say I keep stating what Roar's "losses" are going to be based on that $2million injection but that was never stated by me but was another calculation you made based on my "guesswork", not into projected annual "losses" but simply on how the money would affect the status quo at this point in time. ok? cheers jb

I'm pretty sure Cobb has already have met with the FFA and this was part of the submission on Monday. The key will be who else is the consortium? What percentage will Cobb take? What percentage will Bakrie retain? Who will have overall control? Roar fans couldn't have rushed for a messier situation if they'd tried sadly

If people had concerns about the Bakries, well this new bloke (attempting the buy out) brings a whole new meaning to poor corporate governance (and that's putting it mildly).

jb: no one said they weren't paid monthly. We all know that and it's normally on the 15th. The quarterly payment relates to the massive international currency transfer the Bakries make - they're not likely to do it monthly so as I said, most corporates arrange it once per quarter at most. Now this additional $387k in monthly wages would be equivalent to about $4.6m in annual salaries above and beyond what the players get paid as I outlined above - which doesn't makes sense, if everyone gets paid say 100k that's 50 people. The article is written badly, you're saying Roar lose $6m each year which the facts disagree with; I went to some lengths to explain the calculations and all you've done is come back with some statement on salaries being paid monthly, which was never in dispute? Read the threads above and tell me what you disagree with?
