Eddie Jones accepts Hoiles' rugby apology

By News / Wire

England coach Eddie Jones has accepted former Wallaby Stephen Hoiles’ apology for a question put to him during a post-match media conference – but says whoever put him up to it should have done the same.

Hoiles, working for Fox Sports’ The ‘Other’ Rugby Show, opened the program on Wednesday night by admitting he had got it wrong by asking “inappropriate and offensive” questions of his former Australian coach who labelled him disrespectful.

Jones said on Thursday night the apology was a great example of a guy who’s got fantastic integrity.

“He knew he made a mistake and I think it showed the short of guy he is.

“That’s the end of the matter.

“There’s probably four or five others at Fox Sports that could have apologised, but they squibbed it, which is disappointing. But we’ll get on with it.”

The segment, which is believed to have had Hoiles complete a number of tasks set by the show, did not go to air.

Hoiles’ question in Saturday’s media conference following England’s 39-28 first Test win over Australia was met with bewilderment on social media.

“The lads were pumped up, there was a bit of moisture out there and I think you and Glen (Ella) had a good moment, looked lubed up and a fair bit of shrinkage,” Hoiles posed to Jones on Saturday.

“How did you enjoy that moment with your old mate Glen up in the box?”

Jones told Hoiles at the time he didn’t like the tone of the question before later describing Fox Sports’ treatment of the series as “demeaning and disrespectful to the team”.

If he really had integrity, he would have said "No, that is inappropriate, I won't ask that... it's too far". Instead, all our football shows seem to be turning into some kind of idiotic "boys" show, trying to be funny, setting dares, and what not, instead of offering us true insight, and a breakdown (pun intended) of the game.

Neil and Colvin, I support your comments 100%. If you listen to the Sth African commentators they have an enormous ENJOYMENT of the game, and look for the positives, not the negatives. If a bad pass is thrown they look for the defender who pressured the passer and praise him...if a tackle is missed they praise the attacker, if a kick finds a catcher they praise the positional ability of the back three...it is positive, and it is infectiously enjoyable. The NZ commentators are next best, and the Aussies are woeful. Even Greg Clarke lacks genuine excitement, whilst the so called colour commentators only ever paint from the beige square on the pallette. Martin - Carping. Kearns - soporific. Kafer - better, but sometimes too analytical and thus not enthusiastic. I wish HG and Roy did Rugby commentary, it might show some of these buffoons what enjoyment is about.

Even Aussies recognize it Neil. This was is a Roar article in 2013: " I found the rants of Greg Martin during the gripping Reds vs Brumbies game particularly boorish and plumbing new depths. This is on top of his references to Robbie Deans being an All Black mole. This technique may go down well on Brisbane radio but as a paying customer of Fox Sports, I deserve more than a ‘shock jock’ approach to rugby commentary . Greg Clarke is a first-rate caller with excellent knowledge and skills and is consistently impartial. Is this in part due to his time working in New Zealand? Between Greg Martin and Phil Kearns, both undoubtedly accomplished players, Fox dishes up the most inane, dumbed-down commentary of all three of the SANZAR broadcasters . If I have to endure another Phil Kearns boof-headed line about scrums I will cry. Neither Kearns nor Martin bring any true level of analysis to their task and in Martin’s case his unashamed pro-Queensland stance is also tedious, predictable and boring. As an Australian rugby supporter I find their contributions embarrassing."

Why would anyone be surprised by this from an Australian media organisation that year on cringing year gives a platform to muppets like Kearns?
