Match preview:

After a week of intense scrutiny for both sides, there will be plenty to prove for the Brisbane Lions and West Coast Eagles this Saturday as they lock horns at the Gabba. Join The Roar from 1:40pm (AEST) for live scores and commentary.

Last week was perhaps the ugliest yet for both of these teams in 2016, each suffering humiliating losses in their own way.

The Lions were torn apart at home by cellar-dwellers Fremantle, while the Eagles collapsed against the Adelaide Crows, failing to register a single point in the final term – the first time the Perth club have ever been held scoreless in a quarter.

There’s no doubt the losses have reverberated to the team lists, with both teams making plenty of adjustments in the hopes of a better showing.

The Lions have omitted Nick Robertson, Dan McStay and Trent West, but have also lost Tom Bell and Harris Andrews to injury.

Coming into the side are Marco Paparone, Josh Walker, Ryan Lester, Claye Beams and Eric Hipwood in his first senior match.

As for the Eagles, Nic Naitanui’s well publicised knee injury will see him miss the next 6-8 games, while Scott Lycett, Liam Duggan and Xavier Ellis have been dropped after disappointing weeks both on and off the field.

Jon Giles will play his first game in West Coast colours, joining Lewis Jetta, Fraser McInnes and Sam Butler as inclusions.

Stefan Martin has been one of Brisbane’s most disappointing players this season, and will be looking to regain some form against a depleted ruck division.

With Tom Rockliff back in the side, the on-ball division looks far stronger, but the core group will have plenty of work to do against a midfield boasting Matt Priddis and Luke Shuey.

The Eagles as a whole have had a strange season up til this point with many questioning their ability to win away from home – this match is key for them, as on paper they look to have a clear advantage at both ends of the ground.

Jeremy McGovern continues to have a stellar season holding down defence, while Josh J Kennedy keeps adding to his goal tally.

The finals race is become tighter by the week, and a four-quarter effort from the Eagles’ forward line against an undersized Lions backline will certainly go a long way to giving them a much-needed percentage boost.

It might be 8th versus 17th, but there is plenty on the line for both sides. Justin Leppsitch’s future is at stake, with the third-year coach feeling undoubtedly feeling more and more pressure as each loss mounts.

The Eagles are suddenly far from certain finalists and with key players out will be keen to make a statement.

Prediction
Brisbane can’t kick enough goals to win here.

West Coast by 43.

Will the Eagles relieve some pressure with an important win or can the Brisbane Lions finally put an end to their losing streak? Join The Roar from 1:40pm (AEST) for live blogging and score updates, and join in the discussion below!

was a scrappy game, both teams looked lagged. apparently the eagles are tired, lots of 6 day travel. understandable really given they and dockers travel the most in the comp. maybe as the competition is becoming more even and almost any team can win on the day, the effects of this travel disparity is becoming increasingly noticible and more of an achilles heel that needs addressing by the AFL? but Lroy, i tend to agree with you re: Eagles midfield esp. Priddis and Masten. Priddis is certainly a great extractor and stats racker, but he lacks polish or elite skills with kicking disposal. if we replaced him with a gun player who was fast and could kick goals and hit targets, i also wish he'd cut those curly locks off, so distracting!? ((; but our mid is our weak link in the chain. and simmo has had plenty of time to correct this, it was a problem back in Woosha days. I'm liking Hutchings for his grit and tenacity and he kicks goals. Yeo is obviously class. Redden, Duggan and Jetta we're waiting for them to rise up?? maybe Simmo could throw Mcgovern down front and put Darling in the mid? we need some grunt or muscle with skills. i also think as bad as we seem to be this season, we're only 2 games off top spot!! so if its been a tough draw with many 6 day games and much travel, the 2 week bye break should see these guys regroup and Simmo re-jig his team for the finals assault. there may be a surprise in the wings. there may not. but we also get to play 2 home games in a row after the bye, then test ourselves at the MCG a couple of times, as well as Nth .Melb and Hawks at home. if we come out guns blazing and look the goods like last season post bye, then i'll be fascinated to see if we can beat the Crows at adelaide in last game after the ambush they sprung last week.

When Simpson turned up, the mainstay of his midfield was Shuey, Priddis and Masten. Shuey is all class as evidenced from his running goal from the centre.. given time and space thats what he can do.. which is why top opposition sides give him the hard tag. Masten is a journeyman footballer who has neither elite skills or pace... he has played 80 more games than his talented has warranted. His kicking style is awful, he kicks arcoss his body which is why he drops iit in short, or over kicks the target.. lord knows what he was doing when he either was passing to Darling or having a shot on goal in the third. Priddis without Naitanui is simply a guy running around in circles. His opponent gave him a bath today.. in the one on ones the other guy was harder and faster to the ball. Elliot Yeo, by contrast when given the role of midfielder who gets forward is a pleasure to behold.. beautiful skills, yet he is hard as nails, and wins those 50 50 contests more often than not... he wins even when he is behind his opponent through sheer desperation. Poor old Jetta is a shadow of the player he used to be. It looked like he was trying, but nothing is working out for him. Simpson needs to start earning his money... he has had three years to rejig his midfield and he pretty much still hasnt. Masten and Priddis will never feature in a premiership side.. and neither will West Coast if those two are in the lineup.. sorry, its brutal, but true.

As bad as the Eagles were they will probably win 5 of their next 6 games and only lose to North Melbourne. Another easy run for the Eagles to get them into the finals. At this point of the season they are just Pretenders.

GOAL BRISBANE Brisbane clearance leads to a nice tackle inside 50 trapping an Eagles player holding the ball. It's debutant Eric Hipwood who takes the kick from the goalsquare, easing through his first major in the AFL. Q4 33′ Brisbane Lions 12.10.82 West Coast 20.11.131
