Quade Cooper leaves Toulon, destination likely to be Australia

By The Roar / Editor

Australian Rugby Union playmaker Quade Cooper has confirmed overnight that he will be leaving French club Toulon, despite having a second year option on his contract, which he has decided not to use.

Cooper first joined the club at the end of 2015 where he had declared he would stay in Australia to chase a Rugby sevens berth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, but eventually announced he would be headed to Europe with a clause in his contract allowing him to play if he was selected.

Being dropped from the Rio squad, as well as not getting consistent game time in Toulon has driven him to leave the club, with Australia and the Super Rugby competition likely to be his landing place.

His performances as described by Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal in January were like going from ‘foie gras to pâté’. With mounting speculation Cooper was unhappy, it continued to show on the field and he has now left the club.

Cooper made his Super Rugby debut in 2007 for the Reds, playing 105 five games before he left in 2015. He has scored 770 points in Super Rugby.

Both his former club the Queensland Reds, and the Melbourne-based Rebels are rumoured to be interested in the 58-Test veteran. Cooper will need to sign at least a two-year deal with one of those franchises, or another in Australia, to be eligible for upcoming Rugby Championship.

Cooper tweeted earlier this week about re-joining a Super Rugby franchise, and taking the code hopping Jarryd Hayne with him.

Time will tell where Cooper is going to end up, but the ultimate goal is playing for the Wallabies, so it will more than likely be in Australia somewhere.

Very well done, Mr Head, a sentence with proper punctuation! Gold star for you, little Richard. You should generally avoid starting a sentence with 'But', though we can excuse that in your case as you're getting better. Baby steps....

You`re like the little train that tried and failed miserably. It`s so cute you are trying so hard. But mistaking ability with ambition is definitely your trump card.

BB's comment is not entirely accurate. Jake McIntyre was their preferred option, they committed to it and did not give SG any real game time. As he was not getting game time Goromorau spoke to friends in Japan and got him an option. When he asked for a release from his contract, the Reds accused him of being disloyal. SG was probably a better option (certainly his kicking game is far better than JM's) for the Reds. Particularly if Quade comes back. SG understudying QC for 2 seasons would have been a fantastic apprenticeship.

Wasn't aware anybody here was claiming Quade was "great". There's a few that want to claim he's the opposite and ignore all others who have struggled similarly though.

Quade is infamous for playing poorly against NZ? Australia has not beaten this team in a series since 2002, and one bloke is infamous for playing poorly against them? If you were a balanced observer you'd admit that almost every wallaby is infamous for that given NZ's period of dominance. In fact almost every player in world rugby given NZ's dominance over just about every team since 2008. But you're right, Quade is the only player to play poor against them...

Do you think the poor forward pack performance was at all a factor? Our backs missed no more tackles and scored more tries than the 2015 test in 2 of the 3 tests. But you're right, just Giteau we missed there... Even though the major difference between 2015 and 2016 was whose pack was dominant. But yes, Giteau would have been the difference... Hey, it's not as though he's the type of player that tends to crab sideways when the team is on the back foot...

Yet with him at 12 those players outside him regressed. Coincidence?

No it wasnt obvious. I thought that was pretty clear. All those current flyhalfs like?... But yeah only games against NZ count and the fact that Quade is infamous for playing poorly against NZ is beside the point. The truth isnt important, whats important is praising Quade and pretending all of the coaches that havnt selected him are all wrong and Quades a victim of some fantasy conspiracy. He must be because Foley is absolutely terrible at everything. Quade isnt the most overrated player in history because sensible people dont rate him as highly as the people that overrate him with a passion and claim anyone who doesnt agree is a QC hater. I look forward to the next time hes overlooked due to his failings. That shouldnt be too far away. But naturally thats because the coach is a silly person.

???? Well its pretty clear Twas that you just dont like anyone who questions any ridiculous claim about Quades greatness. You mustnt like anyone who understands rugby then huh? All you want to hear is support for Quade.

Quade is not a good defender. Quade has not been in good form. Quade has still been selected for Aus even though hes been in poor form. You still complain because you are an irrational person who believes in a fantasy world. Good on you. Now can we talk rugby maturely with conspiracy theories brought on by a lack of understanding and state bias?

2015 they beat NZ, Eng, Wal, Fiji, SA and Arg with Giteau but this year without him theyve been awesome and attacked so very well right TWAS? How on earth can you get to where your head is when the evidence you claim to have to support your odd theory is outweighed so heavily? I guess you just dont want to see it or perhaps you just cant. England 3 Aus 0

I never said Giteau was a complete player just that Australia lacks complete players. Get it? As far as you not understanding the value of Giteau, well thats why coaches select him and you dont understand why isnt it? Pretty clear indication that you need to invest more time in trying to understand the game tbh because you dont. Giteau is not there to be a running threat when he is surrounded by Folau, Foley, Mitchell, AAC and Kuridrani. He is there to provide stability, comunication, experience and guidence which is very important. One day you will learn that and then you will stop questioning why hes selected. To people who understand its pretty obvious. Harsh I know but Ive had about enough.

Quade has started over 1 in 4 under Cheika. His form was very poor. Its a wonder he wasnt started more considering his terrible form.

Barbarians 2014. Selected as starter 4 out of about 14. Selected in the 23 about 12 of 14. He wont select him though. He selected Quade when Quade was in the worst form of his life.

Well, I think the Western Force would look stronger with Hayne in the back line but I don't know if they want Quade now that they have Jono Lance:)

Cooper failed to develop and improve his all around game - too much time spent dating b grade Celebs and tooling around on PS4.
