Collingwood Magpies vs North Melbourne Kangaroos highlights: Kangaroos by 40 points

By Stirling Coates / Editor

An intriguing match-up awaits, as the in-form but damned Collingwood Magpies tackle the spluttering finals-bound North Melbourne Kangaroos. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEST).

As disappointing overall as Collingwood’s 2016 campaign has been, they have to receive credit for their competitive form of late.

Last week may have brought an end to their three-game winning streak, but they were gallant in a loss to the Crows in Adelaide. Before that, they’d comfortably accounted for Fremantle, Carlton and GWS in a stunning turnaround.

Finals may be out of the equation for the Magpies, but with four top eight teams in their last six games, they’ll have ample opportunity to play the spoiler.

North Melbourne, on the other hand, are almost the polar opposite to their opponents tonight.

After a record-breaking 9-0 start to the season had them firmly in the premiership race, six losses from their ensuing seven matches now have them in the previously unthinkable position of potentially missing the finals.

Last week’s capitulation against Port Adelaide was of particular concern, as it was the Kangaroos first loss of the year against a non-top-eight side.

With finals hopefuls St Kilda next week, and the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Sydney and GWS to close out the year, every game is a must-win for North.

Collingwood have an enormously strong lifetime record against the Kangaroos, and in recent times it’s been no different.

The Pies have taken seven of the last nine encounters between these sides. The last time North Melbourne had won three out of the last five against Collingwood was in 2001.

Prediction
North Melbourne have had their doubters all year, but even the most one-eyed Shinboner can’t excuse their current dramatic fall. The punters have picked them to turn it around, but with recent form and head-to-head heavily favouring the Magpies, I think I might have to disagree.

North weren't quite as convincing in the second term, but they remained a class above. A textbook crumb and goal from Harvey helped bring the gap to 39. Greater Western Sydney has taken a top-four spot with a 37-point win over North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Watched the replay and couldn't really figure out the free - especially compared to what gets let go in ruck contests - and especially here where 2 Collingwood players (their 3rd man up) pretty well got in each others way too. Alas - 3rd man up gets more rights than anyone else???? Daw a bit unlucky - he didn't get much from the umps - they pinged him quick smart for the 10 metre encroachment but no one else - - and there was a marking contest 30 out where he got clobbered from in front and behind - both worthy of a free - got nothing. Thankfully he was able to launch for mark of the year on his merits!!!

It was a painful transition from 14.10 to 14.16 where the feeling was just one more goal and that would pretty well seal it. Well - North generated 6 clear opportunities before Dumont on the 7th managed to seal the deal. The 3 goals after that were cream on the cake. Generating the chances clearly not the problem. Petrie hitting the post, Harvey missing on the run from right in front - these in particular should've been slotted by experienced campaigners who both had good enough nights.

SIREN BEHIND MAGPIES North Melbourne were seriously challenged in that last quarter, but in the end they held firm before piling on five goals in the last five minutes to claim a 40-point win that very much flattered them. Darcy Moore kicks a behind after the siren. COL - 12.12 (84) NM - 19.16 (124) FULL TIME

GOAL KANGAROOS Just piling them on now! Lindsay Thomas gathers out of the congestion, snaps across the body without looking at the goals - and that's goal number five! COL - 12.11 (83) NM - 19.16 (124) Q4: 1'

GOAL KANGAROOS Party time! Brent Harvey receives the looping handball deep in the pocket, throws it onto the boot and his snap across the body is absolutely superb! COL - 12.11 (83) NM - 17.16 (118) Q4: 2'

GOAL KANGAROOS Definitely game over. Todd Goldstein gets the free kick for a hold in the ruck contest inside 50, and his kick fro 35 out on a moderate angle bends back nicely. COL - 12.11 (83) NM - 16.16 (112) Q4: 3'

GOAL KANGAROOS Game over! Very long kick to full forward spills to ground, Trent Dumont gathers, throws it onto the boot and it trickles through! COL - 12.11 (83) NM - 15.16 (106) Q4: 4'

BEHIND KANGAROOS Time and space in the half forward and the long centreing kick finds Ryan Clarke on his own. Kicking from 20 out, directly in front he misses! Very poor effort. COL - 12.11 (83) NM - 14.16 (100) Q4: 6'

SCORE UPDATE Neither side keen to win this one. Sam Gibson and Brent Harvey miss chances they'd normally slot, and then Jarryd Blair muffs a certain mark and goal in the goal square that would've made things very interesting. COL - 12.11 (83) NM - 14.15 (99) Q4: 8'

BEHIND MAGPIES Andrew Swallow with a very silly front-on bump on Jarryd Blair bending down to pick the football up. He could miss weeks for that, but in the meantime, Blair's simple set shot hits the post. Huge let-off. COL - 12.10 (82) NM - 14.13 (97) Q4: 14'

BEHIND KANGAROOS Brad McKenzie with a crack at goal number one for the year, but it's touched on the line. North very much rallying from in front at the moment. COL - 12.9 (81) NM - 14.13 (97) Q4: 14'

BEHIND MAGPIES Brayden Maynard with a short kick inside 50 and Darcy Moore is able to leap and take a really strong mark in front of Robbie Tarrant! Massive kick coming up from 50 out on a slight angle, he misses but Jeremy Howe gets a free kick! Kicking from next to the point post, he sprays it across the face. Huge let off for North Melbourne. COL - 12.9 (81) NM - 14.12 (96) Q4: 16'

SCORE UPDATE Apologies again - technology getting in the way of a great game. Aaron Mullett is able to tap through Taylor Adams' snap at goal for a point, but Collingwood get it back inside 50 and Steele Sidebottom is able to snap a huge goal! We have a game! BEHIND KANGAROOS Lindsay Thomas with a very clever tap to Nick Dal Santo who hands off to Brent Harvey, but from 25 out on the run he misses! Very uncharacteristic. COL - 11.7 (73) NM - 14.12 (96) Q4: 18'

BEHIND KANGAROOS Brent Harvey with a great run up half forward, but in the end he's forced to settle for a poke to Jack Ziebell deep in the pocket. Kicking from a very tight angle, he strikes it well but it misses to the near side. COL - 11.7 (73) NM - 14.11 (95) Q4: 19'

GOAL MAGPIES Here comes Collingwood! Dangerous kick to full forward with defenders out of position, and while Darcy Moore can't take the mark, Alex Fasolo stays down, gathers the crumbs and rolls through a big goal to start the last! COL - 11.7 (73) NM - 14.10 (94) Q4: 20'
