Roosters crow at long last

By Luke Vella / Roar Rookie

Allianz Stadium opened its gates for what was touted a blockbuster match between two 2015 heavyweights – the Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos.

The Broncos must have forgot this as their steady decline continued, this time falling 32-16 to a plucky Roosters side. This leaves the Broncos reeling having now lost seven of their last nine games. They are at significant risk of falling outside of finals contention with five games to go.

Captain Corey Parker and coach Wayne Bennett remain optimistic despite the loss, suggesting there’s no need for panic stations yet – “One week in footy is a long time, five weeks is even longer” said Parker.

The Broncos will need to turn things around quickly, facing up against the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Stadium, before returning for a formidable run home against the Eels, Bulldogs, Storm, and Roosters once more.

Once again, it was defence that seemed to let the Broncos down, letting in six tries on a cold Thursday night. Corey Oates opening minute fumble and a concussion to winger Lachlan Maranta compounding a disappointing night for last year’s grand final runners up.

After a stuttering season, ex-Bronco Dale Copley would prove to be a difference maker scoring two tries in his first appearance against his former club. Copley, who has missed much of the season through injury had arguably his best performance of the season for the tricolours, as he exposed monumental weaknesses in the Broncos’ left-edge defence.

Luck was on the Broncos side, as prop Jarrod Wallace crashed over from a deflected grubber to level the scores in the 19th minute. Unfortunately for Brisbane it was short lived as the Roosters continued to pile on the points heading into half time. This time it was highly regarded rookie five-eighth Connor Watson offloading to fellow rookie, Latrell Mitchell, who scored his first try of the night.

Ferguson would be next to score, as another line break from centre Dale Copley would find Ferguson to go in untouched and extend the Roosters lead to 12 heading into halftime.

If luck was on the Broncos side earlier, it had completely deserted them shortly after the break, as fullback Blake Ferguson helped the Roosters score a contender for try of the season. The New South Wales Origin star was at his scintillating best as he tiptoed within centimetres of the sideline to put Shaun Kenny Dowall over for an unbelievable try.

The play started with an innocuous kick from half Mitchell Pearce, leading to a second kick effort from Shaun Kenny Dowall forcing Ferguson into moves more akin to aerial aerobics than rugby league.

Broncos’ rookie Tom Opacic crossed for his first NRL try, however in-form back-rower Boyd Cordner backed up his 185 metre night with a 62nd minute try of his own to lament a strong performance for the Roosters.

Dale Copley would yet again find the line breaking through some pedestrian defence from the Broncos as their season grows close to breaking point. Darius Boyd continues his vein of good-form, with a mere consolation try in the 71st minute.

Controversy from the NRL Bunker struck once more as the Broncos were disallowed a try for double movement. Parker and Bennett remained relatively mute regarding the dubious decision, however, Roosters coach Trent Robinson disagreed stating “reaching out” and extending his arm cost them the try.

The tricolours will look to win back-to-back games for the first time in 2016 when they play the Penrith Panthers at Pepper Stadium on Monday night.

Weren't they in the top the betting odds for premiers at the beginning of this year? The only team Broncos would have beaten last round are Newcastle.

@Muzz, Early this season someone on the Roar, explained in detail that they had to get rid of James Maloney to enable Jackson Hastings to play First Grade. Maloney had been one of Easts best players over the past few seasons, look at him this year with Cronulla and NSW.Bad judgement.

To complete the spine Haynes on the market to and he's notorious for driving coaches to the bottle by only training how he wants to. At least kills it on game day.

So its not just the tigers Maybe an astute manager out there could do a package deal with marshall farah and hastings. A whole spine and no coaches required.?

Sio Siua Taukelaho. Does everything required, plus. Bonus is his goal kicking. The importance of the front row has always attracted most of my attention since I watched my first game in '46. I am in absolute awe of Sio. He is as good a prop as I have seen in my 80 years. He excites me so much I am considering a transfer from Belmore to Moore Park, provided Easts play at least one game each season at Gosford. Muzz, sign Sio for life.

Training/playing U20's and is currently on the market/shopped around. Good chance he'll replace B Marshall next season. Something about him telling the board, coaching staff and senior playing group how to do their job. It's easier to move him on than replace the door frames to accommodate his big ego.

Not really db. The Cowboys always request Sat night home games as their fans have a distance to travel. Meaning you'll rarely see a Townsville game televised on Ch9.

Cowboys R23 may be a problem, but it will be on the road 2 weeks running. It will be interesting to know if they stay in Sydney after playing Tigers R22. Townsville / Mascot return, 4 times in a fortnight ain't fun, notwithstanding that they are used to travel.

WARNING - Playing too much Friday night footy can cause serious form slumps. Darius is quality.Definitely leadership material. Josh Mcguire is fast becoming the competitions most overrated cheap shot artist grub. So who do you think is the comps form Prop atm, MAX?

Prediction R26: Roosters relegate Broncos to the knackery. Glad I cut my losses. The Skeletor sulk is one of the most entertaining events in the world of RL. His halves are in mimic mode, his forwards no longer feared, his centres/wingers are the original marsh mellow blend. Only the loyal Darius stands defiant.

Still have some rather tough games remaining (Cronulla, Cowboys) but if we can get over Penrith this week I think we'd be in good stead re. confidence. Agreed with Ferguson, he's been average at best until recently - hopefully he can keep it up, seems to relishing the opportunity at fullback

We played better against the Sharks however failed to ice a number of good opportunities. I reckon we'll beat those Shire bogans next time round.

A good bet in the early part of next year I'd say ...This young guy Watson appears to be a gem , along with Mitchell the future looks bright at Bondi . The possibility of an unbeaten run for the rest of the season isn't out of the question . I also thought Ferguson started to show some form which he has been devoid of in all forms of the game this year .
