Australia Kookaburras vs Great Britain: Olympic men’s hockey live scores, blog

By Connor Bennett / Editor

The Australia Kookaburras are still trying to find their feet at the Rio Olympics and are looking to bounce back against Great Britain. Join The Roar from 9:30am (AEST) for all the action.

The Australians haven’t got off to the start they wanted, after coming into the Games as strong gold medal contenders.

A less-than-convincing 2-1 win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in their tournament opener showed some early signs of rust, but it was an important win nonetheless.

It has been far from smooth sailing from there, though.

An upset 1-0 loss to underdogs Spain knocked the Kookaburras onto the back foot.

Another one-goal defeat, this time to Belgium, yesterday has the Aussies at the wrong end of the standings, and on the cusp of elimination with two games to play.

For their part, Great Britain have also bumped into Belgium and the Kiwis, with similar success.

A 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Belgians was a heavy blow to start their medal hunt.

A 2-all draw against a resilient New Zealand outfit, that refused to concede the deadlock, left them with a lot to do in their remaining games.

But do it they did against Brazil, steamrolling (that’s putting it lightly) the host nation 9-1.

Both Australia and Great Britain find themselves in near identical positions at the moment – a win would set them up for a finals berth, but defeat would leave them hanging precariously on the edge of elimination.

Australia’s last game will be against a Brazilian side that has so far conceded seven, 12 and nine goals in their opening three matches.

The Aussies sit just one point behind Britain, in Group A’s fourth spot.

....they were again unable to convert their dominance in possession, relative to the score board. The QT's will not be so forgiving while I can't see them medaling this tournament based on all the games they have played up until now. The form they display is unlikely to be turned around while their attitude appears almost perfunctory.

Still nothing to get to excited about, why? Because the possession the Aussies gleaned throughout, was not realised on the scoreboard. This side is really struggling, while the QT's will not be so forgiving.

.....again, the Kookaburras dominate possession and struggle to score. This is concerning and despite getting past GB today, this will not be good enough come the QT's and beyond.

Ye of little faith. I reckon they have had their wake-up call and are on track still for gold.

All three goals came in the last ten minutes as desperation began to set in and the game opened up.

They'll need to do a lot better than their pool games if they want a a serious crack at gold

FULLTIME The Kookaburras hold on!! What a flurry in the final ten minutes to and an incredibly tense final quarter. Great Britain will need to rely on goal difference now if my maths serves me correctly to get through to the quarter-finals. Australia on the other hand have secured their less than convincing passage into the finals, as their push for gold continues. Australia - 2 Great Britain - 1

Q4' One last chance at the D for Great Britain. They are plugging away for a foot somewhere, they need to get Jackson on the short corner again. Australia - 2 Great Britain - 1

Glad the Kookas won - at least they will play in the quarter finals but they won't be going any further than that. Cheers Connor.

Q4' Britain bring their goalie out!! They are fighting with everything they have to equalise here with time running out. Inside the circle now... Britain shoot!!! MATTHEW SWANN!! What a ridiculous save. That ball was drilled and it was hitting the back fo the goal for all money, but someway, somehow, Swann gets an inch of his stick onto it, deflecting away from goal. Australia - 2 Great Britain - 1

Q4' GOAL GREAT BRITAIN!! Ashley Jackson near unstoppable from the top of the circle!!! He's absolutely drilled the drag flick into the right side of the net and this game is far from over with two minutes on the clock. Australia - 2 Great Britain - 1

Q4' Great Britain throwing everyone forward, trying to get something back here... but that's the reason they conceded the second goal so they need to be careful. Australia - 2 Great Britain - 0

Q4' GOAL AUSTRALIA!! The Kookaburras double up and they have surely secured this game!! Beale made a superb tackle coming out of the line and feeds it to Orchard on the counter attack. They had four men on a single poor British defender who did the best he could, but it was just not enough with a massive numbers disadvantage. There was a bit of a scramble on the line for who gets it, but Jake Wheaton gets the last touch across the line. Australia - 2 Great Britain - 0

Q4' Australia down field on the counter!! This is huge and they may get another one here... oooohhhh bad tackle there and that's a yellow card for Britain. It saved a near certain goal but that was so blatant. Australia - 1 Great Britain - 0

Q4' GOAL AUSTRALIA!!! Finally, finally they've got the ball into the backboard!! It's taken two and a half games and over three hours of hockey but the Kookaburras finally break the goal scoring drought. Beale ran it into the circle, beating one towards the back line but he was running out of room. A quick jag back in field and a short ball into the middle finds Aran Zalewski who happily knocks it in from close range. Australia - 1 Great Britain - 0
