Match preview:

The Brisbane Lions and the Carlton Blues go head to head today in a match that will mean little in the grand scheme of the season but will see one of these two teams getting a morale-boosting win. Join The Roar for live scores from the match and a live blog of the game, starting from 1:45pm (AEST).

The Brisbane Lions are having one of the worst seasons ever put on record this year. They’ve got just two wins so far, against Gold Coast and Essendon, and if it weren’t for the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the Bombers, they would likely be 1-18 and stuck on the bottom of the ladder. As it is, they’re 2-17 and stuck in 17th.

They’re coming up against Carlton whose season isn’t necesarilly a whole lot better but has gone much better than the expectations were, and so Blues fans can probably have a degree of happiness about that fact.

The Blues in fact put together a patch of six wins from seven games earlier in the season, the highlight being a win over premiership contenders Geelong. The last link in that streak was a win against the Lions – but the Blues haven’t won since, dropping eight matches in a row.

With games against Melbourne and Essendon to follow this one, the Blues have a chance to finish the season on a real high, and they’ll want to start that today.

Brisbane on the other hand will have their senior coach Justin Leppitsch desperate to get some wins on the board in what’s left of the year in the hopes it might save his job.

The Lions have Michael Close, Stefan Martin, Jarrad Jansen and Tom Cutler as their inclusions today with Josh Schache (General Soreness), Liam Dawson (Omitted), Josh Green (Foot), Nick Robertson (Knee) the ones to miss.

Carlton have recalled Liam Jones and will also debut a first-round draft pick in David Cunningham. Their outs are Nick Graham (Omitted) and Andrew Walker (Retired).

Prediction
This game is up at the Gabba where the Lions have played their best footy this year, but that’s not to say they’ve been reliably competitive there by any stretch of the imagination. The Blues have a greater sense of maturity and stability about them, and should get the job done.

Carlton by 24.

not calling people names – calling you out. If you want to behave like an !d!ot and a tr011 then don’t cry to the moderator when people call you on it.

Could someone please tell this gentleman to stop calling people names and to stop bypassing the filters. I appreciate his previous comments have been moderated but he obviously doesn't get it. I assume filters are there for a reason and he is letting this website down in my opinion.

Mattyb - Firstly I responded to you not rudree but you know that and again just being an !d!ot. Secondly your claim of putting the ball in play is similar to newly elected senator Malcolm Roberts claims against climate change - making stuff up isn't putting the ball in play, it's just being an !d!ot. As I said time to grow up son.

Carlton have just lost to a side that everyone has been saying is in crisis and might sack it's coach but the born to rule contingent think you can only say complimentary things and say finals by 2018. May I also remind you that I was only agreeing with another poster who correctly pointed out the Blues have again hit rock bottom. I consider blatant breaching of the websites terms and conditions childish and not being able to accept criticism in a similar fashion. And Macca the ball was firmly in play from my first comment and you unfortunately went the man and attacked Rudree. Gibbs again let the club down and something might need to be done, this is a football comment. After all these years he isn't going to become a leader although his poor work rate could improve if his attitude did. Kerridge made numerous costly errors, especially during the third quarter and again this is a footballing comment. You may disagree, which you are entitled to do but when a side has spent many many years down the bottom of the ladder and losers to a fellow struggling club people have the right to criticize.

Macca, I think it is time to just ignore any of his comments about Carlton. I think anyone on this site now recognises him for what he is when it comes to his continual carping of Carlton. The best description I could find in the dictionary is - troll.

Mattyb - time to grow up son. If you want me to play the ball put the ball in play - so far all you have done is show your ignorance and stup!dity by making ridiculous statements. I dare say you didn't even watch the blues game. Now why don't you just go away, it looks like being a sunny day shouldn't you be burning ants with a magnifying glass.

Macca, when you breach the terms and conditions of the website with your sneaky frustration you are letting everyone down. By sneakily attempting to bypass the filters so you can play the man you not only make the moderators job harder but you force them into a situation where they need to randomly place comments into moderation which effects the experience for everybody. I can understand your frustration that Carltons season has again hit rock bottom following the weekends disappointing performance but we all must play the ball not the man and abide by the reasonable rules put in place.

How someone who uses this website can blatantly with their sneaky behavior breach the terms and conditions put in place is outrageous.

Exactly Col, it explains why he equates making finals with success though.

Bit rich coming from a supporter of the club with the most tragic history - 2 grand finals in 90 years.

Macca, you might think your clever breaching the terms and conditions or this fine website with your fancy letters but Rudree has as much right to express his opinion as you or me and personally I tend to agree with him and he certainly doesn't deserve remarks such as yours. You might be frustrated that Carlton are now a tragic football club but nonetheless you still have to play the ball not the man. I understand Carlton fans are impatient and impatiently wanting success as soon as 2018 but that is unlikely. Interestingly when Carlton were a successful VFL side before the tragic club they now find themselves,a loss to a struggling Brisbane would have had stern consequences, but now Carlton fans are blaming everyone else and poor Rudree has to cop it for making a simple, true comment.

I tend to agree and it difficult to agree with how they are going about things. Boltons honeymoon period is certainly over and while the fans have been very, very up and about and talking finals as soon as 2018 there is still very little to see or like. Surely Carlton need to bite the bullet with Gibbs. He has been around along time and delivered the club little success and his lazy football and poor leadership is going to do more harm than good long term. Carlton aren't going to get what they expect but they need to see him as a failure and take a second or third pick and run. Kerridge is a huge worry as a first year recruit. His disposal is obviously poor but today he made every error imaginable. Dropped multiple easy uncontested marks, over ran the ball on numerous occasions, put a very kickable goal straight across the face and nearly brought rain a couple of times with his blazing, worthless high kicks up the ground. The only bright thing is Cripps but Carlton are going to run him into the ground and his disposal also has question marks so he can't do it all alone. Great to see the Lions get up though.
