Olympics: Athletics Day 5 results - men's high jump final live updates, blog

By Connor Bennett / Editor

We have Aussies in gold medal action and all over the place today as an already historic four days of track and field continues to light up the Rio games. Catch all the live updates and results on The Roar from 9:30am (AEST).

While his brother, Mitchell, is taking on Sri Lanka in Test cricket, Brandon Starc will be jumping for gold this morning in the Men’s High Jump final.

Starc qualified for the final quite comfortably with a 2.29m leap in the group stages, putting him on equal footing with the lead.

Elsewhere in the field, we have two Australian women in the Javelin qualifiers, looking to book a spot in what would be a maiden final for both of them.

Kim Mickle will be looking to back up her gold in the 2014 Commonwealth Games with a big performance in the Javelin, alongside fellow Australian Kelsey-Lee Roberts, who got bronze in that same event.

Brooke Stratton and Chelsea Jaensch are both making their Olympic debut in the Women’s long jump. Jaensch only made her major competition debut earlier this year at the age of 31.

After just sneaking through in the qualifiers yesterday, Lauren Wells will be representing the green and gold in the women’s 400m hurdles semi-finals this morning.

Wells qualified with the 20th fastest time out of 23 available spots yesterday after slipping up towards the back end of her heat, but she should be in much better shape to make a run at top three finish today.

In the women’s 200m, we have 22-year old Ella Nelson in the second semi-final, hoping to push towards a final spot in her Olympic debut.

Elsewhere across the stadium, we’ll bring you all the live action from the Women’s 1500m and Men’s 110m hurdles finals where gold will be dished out to end the day.

Plus all the semi-final action leading up to it, including the Women’s and Men’s 400m hurdles, as well as the hotly contested Women’s 200m dash.

Connor, its great that you write a live blog on this website, but Elaine Thompson the favourite in semi final one? Come on! Yes she wins the 100m, but if you follow the women sprint 200m for a longer time, you will know Dafne Schippers is the big favourite. This is an interesting website that can help you, also other disciplines on this website. https://www.iaaf.org/disciplines/sprints/200-metres

Men’s 110m hurdles FINAL: In the blocks, heads down... and THEY'RE OFF AND RACING!! McLeod gets a great start, Bascou catches quickly but he's struggling on his leap and might have clipped a hurdle there because he's dropping back a touch now. Ortega's making a late charge and he might even pass Bascou... he will!! Not enough to catch McLeod out front but the last 30 metres from Ortega were huge!! McLeoad with a stellar run and no on can touch him, leading from start to finish after exploding out of the gate!! Plenty of hurdles going down in the outside lanes. Allen and Cabral struggled with their jumps and the just couldn't regather after hitting hurdles early. Jamaica with more running gold!!

Women's 1500m FINAL: Rowbury and Weightman leading in the early goings out the front. Sado and Dibaba holding back behind, just biding their time. This is a very steady pace so far. Sado slotting in nicely behind Weightman but it's Muir who makes a bit of a move towards the front as the pace slowly picks up on the second lap. Dibaba and Muir leading the way now and the Ethiopian is looking very strong here, maybe too early through? Kipyegon heads up to the front as they pass the final bell for the last lap. Dibaba and Kipyegon break off the front!! They're a long, long way ahead now and they won't be caught as they come across the back straight and into the final turn. Kipyegon breaks off the front and she's cruising now!! Massive gap as Dibaba gives up and runs out of steam with 50 metres to go. Simpson makes a late charge from the middle of the pack to come through in third .

Women’s 200m semi-final 3: Ahoure with the best start as Bowie comes around the turn in second but she is flying. Ayhe has gone with a steady opening hundred, but that extra bit of energy is bringing her home here, coasting past fourth and third up into second place behind Bowie who holds on at the end. Facey finished well on the outside in lane 8 to sneak past Ahoure in the final 20 metre stretch to pick up third.

Women’s Long Jump updates: Brooke Stratton has qualified for the Long Jump FINAL!! A fantastic effort from Stratton to get through on an impressive 6.56m leap. Unfortunately 6.41m wasn't enough for Chelsea Jaensch to get through, but we still have one Australian fighting for gold in the final!!
