Cahill ready for Melbourne City debut

By Ben McKay / Wire

Melbourne City have declared Tim Cahill ready to make his first Australian club soccer appearance in two decades.

Both City coach John van ‘t Schip and the man himself believe Cahill is fit enough to make a debut at the unlikely venue of suburban Brisbane ground Perry Park on Wednesday night.

A 3,500-strong capacity crowd is likely for the FFA Cup round of 16 match between City and former National Soccer League club Brisbane Strikers.

Van ‘t Schip confirmed Cahill would be in the squad but suggested he would watch the start of the match from the bench, saying “it’s about how long and what’s the best in the interests of us and Tim”.

“He’s ready to play.

“He’s a fit guy, took very good care of his body during his career.

“He’s been out for a few weeks and didn’t do that much training, just had one week.

“But still you need a bit of a build up and that’s what we’re going to look at.”

Cahill told Melbourne radio station RSN 927 he had put his hand up to play.

“I will give myself every opportunity due to the fact I’ve completed all sessions, indoor and outdoor, and basically recovered really well,” he said.

“I’m feeling good. The main thing is I’m travelling up to Brisbane and we’ll play it by ear … you’re always preparing to play when you’re travelling.”

As of Tuesday morning, though, Cahill still needed a crucial piece of paperwork to be filed, but the club are putting him on the plane in the expectation it will be sorted.

“I think the FFA still has to tick it off … that will be no problem I heard,” van ‘t Schip said.

It’s understood FFA received Cahill’s finalised contract information from City for processing on Tuesday morning.

In addition to Cahill, Josh Rose and Neil Kilkenny could also make their City debuts, with only Ivan Franjic and Corey Gameiro unavailable.

Van ‘t Schip said he was close to completing his squad for the upcoming season.

“We still have a marquee spot available and there’s maybe another opportunity for a spot that we can fill in in the squad,” he said.

“We’re looking carefully around and hopefully we can get them in before the league starts. But we dont want to rush it.”

Yes, such a waste of time and space you have to keep responding, just to ensure you get your "advice" across. I have plenty of opinions recorded on this site on a variety of topics. I just don't enjoy know-it-all's like you thinking they must correct everybody, particularly when your own facts are hazy at best.

Freddy - Notice, despite my advice to you, you are still reading my offerings so there is hope that you will go back and read and absorb all that has been said.. Your latest quote "do I think I own this site" is just to ridiculous to even consider as sensible. Other than that I consider our tete-a-tete a waste of time and space but I am ever so hopeful that you will perhaps soon offer some opinion on a matter that we can offer subjective discussion Cheers jb.

Ah, so now you are changing your story. Admitting the TV commentary DID say "Strikers record crowd" and shifting the blame onto the "media" in general. What a cop out. Sorry, but I'm not interested in whether the other contributor is well-respected or not. That's your subjective opinion, which you seem to regularly believe constitutes fact, underlining why I label your attitude as superior. Here are some other examples. "Try to keep your comments free from denigrating the thoughts of others and coming up with debatable suggestions" "Don't spend your time looking for minimal errors" With condescending comments like these, the question must be asked, do you actually own this site? Because you certainly seem to think you do. And you still don't have the good grace to admit when you're wrong. Hardly surprising though.

Freddie - Breathe easy Did you read what was said??? I did say they had mentioned a "Strikers record crowd at Perry Park" (maybe twice) but ,the media ,also said it was a "sell out crowd" (whatever that means ), and not only was it mentioned in the commentary but in follow up after match comments both on TV and newspaper media. Now doesn't it appear just a little strange to you that another well respected contributor to these columns ,Towser, agreed with my observation re. mis-information. Maybe the 2 of us were hearing things but please ,don't hold your breath (it can be dangerous) over such a minor discussion point .ie actual crowd figures. We were talking in thousands, not hundreds.and to repeat myself we were discussing miis-information ,not actual figures Please feel free to join in on discussion but try and keep your comments free from denigrating the thoughts of others and coming up with debatable suggestions. Debate by all means, but don't spend your time looking for minimal errors that occur in every discussion. Cheers jb

Facts? You openly admitted you got your facts wrong regarding the actual crowd figure! I have listened to the commentary actually as I recorded the game. They quite clearly state a "Strikers" record at Perry Park. Apologise when you're ready (though I won't hold my breath)

Freddy - Thank you for your complimentary comments. Did you happen to hear the commentary again..Did you see the term "sell out crowd" used in print media. If not you'll never know. We,that is Towser and I,were actually talking about "word semantics" (a fairly upmarket description for mis-information),not only on TV broadcasts but in media reports of all kinds. Re. my "superior attitude" , if facts worry you, when you see my name (which I use quite openly), just don't read the comment. Easy ,isn't it?. Keep up the good work Cheers jb.

So, you spend your time checking over word semantics of tv broadcastrs, then dismiss your own factual inaccuracies? Entirely typical of the superior attitude that you display so regularly on these forums.

Freddie - They did say that it was a record at Perry Park for the Strikers, once, maybe twice ,but if you perchance get to listen to the commentary again you will hear the "Perry Park record crowd " mentioned at least another 3 times. My wife pointed out that I was wrong in the first instance because they had said it was a Strikers record but that made us even more aware of the later statements OK? The statement "sell out crowd" was also used on a few occasions during and after the game. Re. your correction e the number, thank you ,though to be honest, the discussion between Towser and I was not concerned about a differential of 150. Cheers jb

Didn't they say a new club record for the Strikers at Perry Park? In which case, it's you who have your facts wrong?

Towser - Took me all of 10 minutes to look up the crowd on the opening day of the NSL at Perry Park in 1977. Opening day crowd was 5314, Brisbane City v Marconi. Lions followed the following week playing Canberra in front of 4178. The first "derby" match, game 7 in the season, attracted 6,400, and the second "derby", game 20, pulled in 7,300. It was not until the third season of the NSL that gates began to decline but by then it was no secret that both clubs were eyeing up playing their home games at their own grounds at Richlands and Spencer Park. Cheers jb

It's worth noting that "Calcio" itself was a term invented by Italian nationalists who didn't like the term "football" which was entering into their language.

Mis-information indeed jb and very annoying. Having like yourself seen, well who knows how many football matches the memory at times can be clouded. However cloudy or not I often popped in to Perry park in the NSL days, although not a fan of any particular club and I seem to remember quite a few matches well over 3,500. For instance in the early days of the NSL Brisbane City vs Brisbane LIons, George Best at the Lions, a couple of fleeting Qld vs NSW clashes, the Socceroos vs ? remember Mehmet Durakovic scoring, round about 1993, I'm sure with a bit of delving there's more, but that's off the top of my head. Regarding the stadiums yes "willpower" is an apt/accurate observation. Although I dont expect people who are not from South Yorkshire to understand the backgrounds of the small towns mentioned, believe me they are not affluent by any stretch ,yet willpower made up for that deficiency in building new stadiums.

Towser -The mis-information that we football fans have to suffer from the media never ceases to amaze me. Last night we were repeatedly told that a new ground record of 3,700 had been set for Perry Park. I can distinctly remember (as would others) Glasgow Rangers playing a Queensland team there when a temporary grandstand was erected on the far side of the ground and a crowd of over 8000 attended. As I have spelled out before the foundations are already in place for the erection of a stand over the present club house and back in the days when the ground was established as the "home of soccer" the ground down towards the river was not available for re-development as it was either leased or belonged to Telecom. That ownership or lease has now expired so that ground could be incorporated into any re-development. All that is missing is, as you say, a bit of willpower on the part of the various "committees" that have ran our code in Queensland for the many years since Federation took place in the early 1960's. As Waz says there are other considerations, not the least of which would be an existing "tenant" being taken away from Suncorp during the "off-season" for the Rugby codes. Not enough "concerts "to fill the gaps Cheers jb.

Spot on Tully. Demeaning is precisely the word. MF, I think I recall you saying that you've got Italian heritage just like me so I can relate to what you are saying. I'm not sure if the parents thought that Calcio translated to Soccer but they seemed content referring to it as such. Call it what you will, young or immature, but I too was content calling it Soccer. Only later did I feel that the term didn't fit. Football made sense. Its a game played with the feet, the majority of the world refer to it as Football and the dawn of the A-League and Football Federation Australia solidified mine and many other football supporters feelings that Football was the appropriate name for our game. Other codes including your beloved Aussie Rules were obviously not happy with us calling our game Football, and went on continuing to call our game Soccer. For me, its from that moment that Soccer became a demeaning term BUT only when referred to it from the anti-football brigade. It's funny, my dad and I still sometimes by accident refer to it as Soccer, but that's OK as there is no malice in it. BTW, I don't understand why a person like you with your Italian heritage is not as passionate about football as practically every other Italian I know. We love the game! Maybe things are a little different in Melbourne.

Very much a wait and see approach by Martin Lee this season before rushing in wallet wide open. What will happen April 2017 onwards is anyones guess but I do wonder if Scott Millar happens to gets released from his last year of contract that we may have the potential of our first 'marquee' coach. Not to mention the possibility of better facilities in the short to medium term if things work out ;-) Not to understate the potential in our new owner, whose group also has interests in sports media broadcasting and marketing, but I think the Ledman Group is worth a billion dollars while Lee a millionaire.

It would be a good question - were MCity not willing to pay Cahill's wage demands while the FFA wanted a huge star to show off in media negotiations? Only time will show how this all pans out. I hope Cahill does well and the fans don't give him too much stick if he does not. I still wonder as to whether he will get enough game time with our short season to be game ready in World Cup qualifiers and Confeds Cup next year. He'll have a plan to keep playing a short stint somewhere I think. Incredibly driven but 2018 World Cup may be one year too far for Cahill.

interesting comment, but more provocative than necessary. My main question is this: if they still have a marquee slot available (as JVS is quoted as saying in the article), why did they need the FFA to come to the party and establish a new rule for Tim Cahill? Couldn't they just use the marquee slot and have City Group stump up the cash, rather than have the FFA assist? Just saying.

Dickov didn't do too well at Doncaster. I can only assume he has his Pro Licence to coach in the A-League otherwise how will he be allowed? Damien Mori or Arthur Papas I hope - Papas did a stint with Jets Youth (they were playing well) before going to Indian Premier League as a challenge. Doing his Pro licence in Japan, which are only one of two AFC nations allowed to run their own Pro-Licence course (we are the other one IIRC). Really feel the Mariners need to get this decision right.
