Socceroos World Cup Qualifier: Postecoglou wants Perth to be a cauldron

By Ben McKay / Wire

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has urged Perth fans to play their part as Australia begins its final ascent to the 2018 World Cup at nib Stadium on Thursday.

The two countries last met at ANZ Stadium three years ago when Josh Kennedy’s late header secured qualification for the 2014 showpiece in Brazil.

But it was the vocal Iraqi supporters that sang and cheered all night, providing most of the atmosphere in the 80,000-strong crowd.

Ahead of tricky away days on the road to Russia, Postecoglou wants to hear vibrant home support that will rival what his side must endure abroad.

“It’s a rectangular stadium with a big crowd hopefully one that’s vocal and passionate,” he said.

“We need that and we are certainly going to face that away from home … they are going to be pretty challenging environments.

“The second game in UAE, whilst they may not be the vocal and passionate crowd, it’s going to be 42 degrees.

“All of these kind of things we’re ready to overcome but I’d love to throw some challenges at the opposition that weren’t just about us.

“Hopefully we can have a really loud, vocal and passionate crowd behind us to intimidate the opposition. That’ll help.”

The stadium is almost a sell-out, with a few hundred tickets remaining on sale.

One end has been reserved for a large Iraq fan contingent of up to 1,000 people.

Visiting coach Radhi Shenaishil said he felt “at home” playing matches away from Iraq given the enthusiastic Iraqi community abroad, and particularly in Australia.

Postecoglou’s motivational tool could be striker Tim Cahill.

The Melbourne City man is in the squad and could start against Iraq despite a lack of recent game-time with the A-League yet to kick off.

“That is why he is here not just to do promotional events,” Postecoglou said.

“He’s done it in the past for us, and we will have a look at everyone. From our perspective and unless the medical people tell me otherwise, everyone is available.”

Somethings up... Courier Mail [News] ran some very poor Roar articles when a certain person was there.... sBS ran some even worst aarticles when the said Mr C was there... This week the CM full of praise for the Roar and just released on TWG site a amazing article by SBS and taken from the new head of the A-League saying the Roar can be as big as MV, WSW etc... Me smells a certain CEO pulling a lot of behind the scene strings to ensure MR C was gone well before the season started...

"Every post you go up the scale Rick, keep it up." I'll take that as a compliment. In answer to your first question: True. I disagree with your second question, along with its premise.

Every post you go up the scale Rick, keep it up. There’s a difference between talking about “true fans” – i.e., saying that one fan is “worth” more than another, or better, or whatever, and acknowledging that some fans are more avid or knowledgeable than others. Is that not true? And do you agree or disagree that a person who solely calls the finals “the world cup” and insists that the qualification process is not “the world cup” is less likely to be an avid follower of the game?

No marron, it's only sarcasm if you inherently believe I 'didn't' get confused by your initial comments. If you believe I 'did' get confused, then your preceding statement is called a double negative — it makes no sense basically. In short: Don't be a smart #@$ if your ability with the English language is limited. BTW — The King's English is a book. Your last sentence makes sense if you lose 'the' in front of it. That's 'not' sarcasm either.

Sure okay. I'll remember that in future. Explain everything clearly to Rick in the first instance so he doesn't get confused - even if it appears he's got it and is playing along, he's probably not. If I'm not sure if a word is the King's English then pick a different one. That's sarcasm.

Great yet another thread destroyed by the guy that loves the sound of his own voice. How the m0ds don't ban this poster for continually derailing threads is beyond me. Perhaps petty and infantile (not to mention completely irrelevant) semantic debates to qualify a patently incorrect argument is what they want for their forum. No point marron. He Never adds anything of value to the football discussion.

"You suggest i’m missing out on sarcasm/irony in your posts but completely miss mine with the soccer comment. You are being a pedant in an ironic manner. So was I." It doesn't work like that marron. You don't get a second chance to clarify your position. I gave you that opportunity further up and you chose to ignore it. It's futile now going down the sarcasm/irony path to cover a blatant mistake. Read my comments above to Punter with regards to this. "Nothing pleases me more than people attempting to use grammar to prove how much better they are than other people on the internet." Not sure if I should take that as a compliment or not. Rarely do I even mention grammar issues on this site; I make plenty of mistakes myself. To correlate one's use of correct grammar with condescension is a little hypocritically don't you think?

"firstly Marron actually gave you a compliment" I'm sure if that were the case he would have clarified his comments in his last response. Seeing as he didn't, I'm going to guess you're dead wrong — again. Not sure what's pedantic about my comments above either. All I did was copy-and-paste his own words — simple really. If you want to defend the indefensible, go right ahead, but at least structure it with some logic; instead of 'I think he owned you'. How old are you again?

Hey Rick, firstly Marron actually gave you a compliment, by thanking you not calling is 'Soccer', secondly, I think he also just owned you, you were being pedantic, now I wonder why, know you don't like A-League, but this is Int'l matches.

There was a game on football yesterday CJFN & is was an important world cup qualifier & I prefer to focus on that. As for anti-siphoning, yes this game should be on FTA. I heard that there is a partner has been found for Foxtel for FTA but was not in place before yesterday's game. Shame for those without Foxtel, but I have foxtel, but even if I didn't I would find somewhere who would be showing it, friend, pub, RSL. No back to the game, Brad Smith has potential but needs to eliminate those poor mistakes. Talking about sincerity, what's with your name?

"Rick I don’t believe in true fans or anything else." ...followed by: "I’m pretty confident also that if you looked at the people who call only the finals “the world cup” and don’t believe that the qualifiers are part of “the world cup” you’d find that those people are not as committed to following football as the people in the first camp." Good stuff. "Rick I don’t believe in true fans or anything else." ...yet demand this of me: "And I’ll thank you to never refer to the game as soccer in any conversation you ever have." ...but can't reference anywhere of me using such language on this forum. Oh the irony here though: "Rick if you’re going to be a pedant at least be **consistent**." Beautiful stuff. "You can’t pick on one aspect of what it’s officially called and ignore the other." Here's the rub: If you're going to come to the aid of someone like Fuzz, you might want to sense the sarcasm in my original comments, unless of course you actually think I believe the WCQ's should actually be called WCFQ's, in which case you have completely missed the point. "I’m not sure that that is what Fuss actually meant but that’s his lookout" You sure that's his outlook, or something he just made up perhaps?

Bob Brown: I don't need to explain those things. They have no bearing on the state of the law. How do you explain the anti-siphoning list or underlying Act containing no reference to there being a Tier A or Tier B? How do you explain there being no record of the anti-siphoning Bill being passed by parliament? Are you seriously still asserting that Tier A and Tier B is a thing?

Punter: I can't pretend to be any sort of expert on structures or setup, so can't give a detailed or nuanced answer. Since I doubt the sincerity of your question, I'm content to keep it brief. Milligan played well. Made a crucial tackle and looked comfortable. Not sure about any comparison with Wright or Spiranovic. Brad Smith had a stinker. Any thoughts on anti-siphoning?

Wrong wrong wrong! How do you explain Fox trying to get an FTA partner? Why did Fox buy the FTA rights if they can't broadcast FTA?

Its not the real Fussball. Its a fake Fuss with a similar sounding handIe from Pippinu, so he can have a fantasy discussion with himself.

Rick I don't believe in true fans or anything else. I don't believe that literally every football fan would use those exact words. I'm not sure that that is what Fuss actually meant but that's his lookout and if you want to hold him to those literal words that's yours even if it seems a bit futile to me. I'm pretty confident that most football fans, on reflection, would know the difference between the qualifiers, the finals, and recognise that the whole thing is part of the "world cup". I'm pretty confident also that if you looked at the people who call only the finals "the world cup" and don't believe that the qualifiers are part of "the world cup" you'd find that those people are not as committed to following football as the people in the first camp. In other words, it's a bit of a giveaway that someone is not an avid fan if they insist that "the world cup" only refers to the finals stage. Note - there is a difference between insisting or believing that the world cup only means the finals, and using the term "the world cup" in everyday conversation to mean the finals.

"And I’ll thank you to never refer to the game as soccer in any conversation you ever have." Give me some examples; I shall then repent of my sins and be forgiven — is that how it goes? "The whole thing together is the world cup, even if people often drop the “finals”." So you don't agree with this statement from Special Agent Fuss: “Every football fan refers to the qualifying process as ‘Qualifiers for the World Cup Finals’” ...either that or you're not a 'true fan'.. Which is it?

This again? LOL Rick if you're going to be a pedant at least be consistent. You can't pick on one aspect of what it's officially called and ignore the other. And I'll thank you to never refer to the game as soccer in any conversation you ever have. The world cup finals are held every four years. The world cup qualifiers are held to determine who can compete at the finals tournament. The whole thing together is the world cup, even if people often drop the "finals".

The irony of someone who views the game as being "un-australian" refusing to support an australian team. That's un-australian brucie.
