Highlights: Rampant All Blacks swat aside Springboks

By News / Wire

The All Blacks have brushed aside a stubborn South Africa 41-13 in Christchurch to all-but seal another Rugby Championship crown.

The rampant world champions notched a fourth-successive bonus-point win and consigned the Springboks to a third-straight loss to maintain the respective fortunes of the two historic great rivals.

Up 15-10 at halftime following some robust early work from the visitors, the All Blacks steamed clear with four of their six tries coming after the break against a fraying defence.

As they did last week against Argentina, the All Blacks’ pressure broke the Springboks, who had attacked the rucks to disruptive effect throughout the first 40 minutes.

The result effectively hands New Zealand the Championship title with two rounds to spare.

The outcome heaps more pressure on Springboks coach Allister Coetzee ahead of home Tests against Australia and New Zealand.

They failed to curtail All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith, who unfurled an influential display a week after being subbed off early against Argentina when his form dipped.

His passes set up the first four All Blacks tries, to the back three of Israel Dagg, Julian Savea and Ben Smith and flanker Ardie Savea.

The No.9’s kicking game was also a class above that of the Springboks, with five-eighth Elton Jantjes enduring another troubled night.

An early penalty to New Zealand five-eighth Beauden Barrett was followed by South Africa’s only try, when 120-Test winger Bryan Habana ran a beguiling angle.

Jantjes then opened the door for the hosts when he dropped the subsequent kickoff cold.

It sparked two near-identical tries to wingers Dagg and Savea, the latter notching his first points in seven Tests against the Springboks.

It was the most points New Zealand had scored in 10 years against the Springboks.

Owen Franks finished the Test with an unwanted world record.

By failling to score a try in his 84th Test, the All Blacks’ tighthead prop set a new mark for the longest tryless start to a career.

Taylorman, one of the nice things about The Roar is that most people debate about the ideas, don't resort to infantile personal attacks such as yours. If you read my post, you'll notice that 90% is about praising your beloved ABs. One exception was about the coach, the other that some AB supporters are quite as classy as the team. Clearly this applies to you.

The old once proud Springbok is fading ever since quotas came into effect! Another quota coach a quota assistant backline coach in "STICK" and proudfoot, i mean who and how the hell with such very very little experience hehe excuse me but i can only shake my head in disbelief but how can they ever so easily just waltz into a once well respected Springbok team and think they are coaches of international standards huh??how is this possible??? Quotas is how and it reflects in the game with very little structure or plan! What a task for any coach having to select a team based on quotas no wonder all the coaches of worth arent interested in coaching the Springboks hence the shape of the play! Another major problem is our reseves is heading overseas, i mean look at the All black replacements, reserves! We cant compete. No wonder all the young upcoming talent is heading abroad to greener pastures with a weak Rand and the prospect of not making team because you are not the right colour???, Players MUST BE SELECTED ON MERIT as quotas is a disgrace to the game and also an insult to all the players and its followers!! Its no wonder the team is forever losing, the pride has been taken away and merit given the boot! What baffles me even more with the political interferance in sport in South Africa is how easily the Springbok supporters and sponsors just accept this circus even the old IRB? I mean if transformation and quotas are so important to lay the past to rest then way so few white players in the South African soccer team, why no quotas there??? Its all politics and its ruining a once proud nation and Springbok name...please retire the Springbok and rename the proteas is more suited......

Cruden is actually injured at present so that can't be tested however I actually doubt that statement - Cruden when fit is most definitely still in the equation

Jones is a joke, journalists always look to him when they need a dumb headline quote. Real disgrace, was happy when he left. Cheika mouths off, but generally against specific things in the game (a ref call, poor handling, etc) . I don't love it, but doesn't affect me much. The AB players historically has been all class (as opposed to many of the supporters). Being professional is an important part of the team culture and is, although I'm not a AB supporter, something I've always admired (beside, of course their skill). I can't remember reading an AB quote dismissing the opposition, from a player or a coach (before Hansen). Even if you want to argue that Jones and Cheika are bad, is the solution for Hansen to lower himself to their level? Should the ABs start doing silly mistakes and playing inconsistently to match the opponents? Reality is that Hansen is just jealous that Cheika got the Coach Gong last year. My aunt could have coached the ABs to the title last year, with that group of players, while Cheika took a discredited and disjointed group to second place. If he wants to prove himself, he should resign and try to coach Italy to win the Six Nations or something similar. I hope his poor form doesn't infect team culture.

Cruden is not starting another meaningful test as long as Barrett is healthy. Get used to it.

I can't wait until Hansen really let's fly ..... The man's a motormouth and so out of control, you should watch him in the coaching box , the number of times he flicks his pen is disgraceful and those hand gestures and the muttering under his breath, thank goodness we can't hear that stuff .....thank goodness Cheika shows restraint .

Mouthing off???- listen and watch the antics of Cheika when things aren't going his way. Listen to Jones stirring. Hansen is very restrained, and only makes the occasional quip when asked a question by the media

Do you listen to Jones, Chekia, or past pommie coaches mate, Hansen is like the Dali Lama compared to that lot. Sorry but as an Aussie we really have to stop obsessing with the so called arrogance of what's arguably the best sports team out there, get a life and worry about your own teams poor performance Paulo the kings of inconsistency they are.

Aussie commentators are there at every international game I believe, so we will have to endure Kearns yet.. No question our commentary team is woeful though. Only Rod Kafer, who is excellent, is worth listening to.

Fair call on Habana I realised I'd overlooked him after it was too late to change - would have placed him ahead of DHP. Folau hasn't quite been at his best, but still think he's in the top 3 - and shifted to wing where his kicking game won't be exposed.. I haven't seen all Argentina games and Hernandez wasn't there last night so I didn't have enough to go on. What I did notice however was the Pumas centres never really achieving a good position to run of Sanchez. The halves have been clicking quite nicely for Argentina what I've seen before last night though. Landajo starting ahead of Cubelli might have had something to do with it as well. Cooper does as many bad things as good, but I've no real argument against swapping the two. Pocock has still been playing well and I like him as a 7 more than Hooper, hence why I went with him. Kepu was good last night but has been below his best all RC which is why I put him on the bench. No TH prop has stood out to me yet.

The best thing about the rest of the Wallaby games for the year is that they are away so won't have to listen to Phil "Cyclops" Kearns and Gordon Bray(ing Donkey). Australia has to be one of the worst countries to watch and play sports in. The commentators are so biased. Example when opposition teams give away penalties near their goal line the Aussie commentator are even more apoplectic than Moore and Cheika. Yet when the Wallabies do it they say "good penalty to give away" (direct quote from last night). The tv producers also focus on any mistakes the opposition make and refuse to replay any errors or foul play that the Wallabies commit. South African and New Zealand coverage is vastly more balanced and the camera work is also vastly superior. The Australian coverage is as poor as the team.

Everyone is avoiding saying it, but let's give them their praise - this AB team is really something else. Dominance is similar to USA in basketball. Yes, Wallabies, SA are making mistakes and not playing to their potential, Argentina still finding area to improve, but the difference in quality is there. I thought they would go through a rebuild after all the retirements last year, but the new guys are dazzling. SR results weren't a fluke. I hope the Wallabies truly can step up and pose real competition next month. Only sad thing about this AB is the coach becoming ungracious and mouthing off. It's a disservice to the team, as the AB culture has always been composed and professional. Getting cocky and too full of yourself is the way down for most good team, hope the coach's poor attitude doesn't set an example for the players.

The Boks selection is a puzzle . There are good players in the squad , the locks ,2. out of 3 of the Loosies, hookers played well, but it is the backs that give me the most concern, where it is a mess and the coach really is at a lost . HB,FH, Cs ,FB and none specialist winger are all wrong and yet I believe the right players in SA are there , but are not selected for various reasons or are picked for the wrong positions.

Bit harsh the guy is still young. He showed in the Super Rugby final that he doesn't have the big match temperament yet but he is a better prospect than Cooper ever was. He tackled like a demon all night. Coetzee hasn't done him any favours by throwing him in at the deep end. I don't understand why, if he is going to select a plodder like Morne Steyn, who isn't going to add anything to the game except steady the ship when he is brought on, he doesn't start him. Start Steyn, and a couple of beefy loose forwards, have the Springboks play their traditional power based, defensive kicking game. Wear down the opposition down with the physical play, then at the 50 minute mark bring on your Lions loose forward, Jantjies, Faf de Klerk and take it to the opposition when they are tiring. This will help ease Jantjies into international rugby. He's had a pretty traumatic introduction while Morne Steyn, Mister "703 test points" has been warming the pine.
