Thousand Guineas 1600m live race updates, blog

By The Roar / Editor

The Thousand Guineas is shaping up to be a bit of an interstate war, with the favourites coming down from NSW to take over the Victorian contingent. Join The Roar from 3:50pm (AEDT) for all the live race updates and highlights from Caulfield.

Foxplay and Global Glamour are the two big names coming into the race, but they have strong company across the 1600 metre dash.

Foxplay is coming in off the back of a couple of bug runs, taking out the Furious and Tea Rose in differing conditions.

Global Glamour had a rough ride at Tea Rose, finishing 6th, but the filly did take out Flight with a dominant ride controlling the pace from the front and taking it home on the last straight.

The market has been favouring these two horses from New South Wales quite heavily leading into the race, but their competition is much better than they’re being given credit for.

Missrock had a strong run at the Thousand Guineas Prelude, finishing very strong and putting her name in the hat as a contender for the big dance.

A sloppy start was saved by a bolting finish, clocking in the fastest closing fractions of the race to turn her fortune around and finish at the post much further up than she should have.

If she can figure out that start with a good barrier draw then there’s no reason why Missrock can’t win this one.

La Luna Rossa was another to bring it home in powerful fashion at the Prelude, coming over from New Zealand with some decent form, but it’s Legless Veuve who has the win to her name.

She took out the Prelude and is shaping up to be one of the big chances to dethrone the heavily favoured NSW members of the race.

Sword Of Light has her sights on a win after a strong Prelude run, coming in third, but she’ll be benefited from a weight carry drop coming into this race.

What are the odds?
Foxplay has taken the lead over Global Glamour in the bookies market, leading the punting market at $3.20 for the win, with Glamour priced at $4 in the same stakes.

Whispering Brook has come a bit out of nowhere in the betting rounds despite a patchy lead-up and preparation, dropping down to $9.50.

Missrock is priced well at $11 and is a very good value for money option. La Luna Rossa is at $13 while Prelude winner Legless Veuve comes in at a very generous $21.

For those of you looking for the underdog, Peeking Duck and Fromparis Withlove are both paying $126 for the win.

Prediction
I like the look of Missrock and Legless Veuve, but the big money would be Global Glamour.

Foxplay has had a better form of runs leading into the race, but Global Glamour has the strength and consistency to take the win for mine.

1. Global Glamour
2. Missrock
3. Foxplay
4. Legless Veuve

She did it both ends, did Global Glamour and really did everything right - sped to the lead, eased the tempo without overracing and had a kick on the straight to see off her rivals. Brilliant win and joins the likes of Atlantic Jewel, Guelph and plenty of other great winners of this race. Next big race is at Randwick in the Group 1 Spring Champion, and we're back here with the Guineas for the boys, the Caulfield Guineas in about 30 minutes.

Really had a good kick in her - I wasn't sure about 250m out if they were overtaking her but gee she did well. My pocket breathes a sigh of relief, that's for sure.

Global Glamour holds on! Big win at $4 or better depending on where you shopped. I Am A Star was second at $5.70, Whispering Rock third at about $3. Foxplay motored home late but nowhere near them in fourth. Numbers in the top four: 3-5-1-4

800m to go Global Glamour running them along. Can she hold on? They're bunching behind her as they come around the turn.

They're off! Foxplay away fairly. Hot pace early as they charge forward. Global Glamour has sped to a two-length early lead and La Luna Rossa joins her at the hot tempo.

She won't start favourite though, Foxplay will likely be the fave by the time the race starts. Old mate Tony Brassel likes Global Glamour. What a tipster he is. Fillies moving into the barriers well.

Runners behind the gate at Caulfield. Two and a half minutes away. I'm on Global Glamour here after her win in the Flight Stakes.

Big race this for the girls. Late money coming for Whispering Brook, the WA filly.

I haven't mentioned Harlow Gold yet - she's got barrier 1 and might find it tough to find daylight at the right time, but won last start against the boys in lower grade and has the Blinkers on. She's well found in the market though at around $10.

Both Global Glamour and Foxplay just drifting in the market as we're about six minutes away from scheduled start.

The two Sydney fillies are hard to separate. Fox Play has won two on the trot back this time and was huge winning last stat at Randwick and looks suited to the mile. Global Glamour held out Yankee Rose last start over the 1600m and will be going forward here. Elsewhere, Missrock should be flying home from midfield after closing late after bad luck last week at Caulfield in the Prelude. Plenty like the NZ horse La Luna Rossa with the Blinkers going on for the first time after her first race in Australia was strong in the Prelude as well.

I'm still barely getting over the Winx result and yet here we are, with one of the better Group 1s of the year as the fillies clash. So the Thousand Guineas kicks off a big Quaddie at Caulfield. Plenty of money in those pools if you can find four winners in a row. We're just over 10 minutes from a race start - runners are in the yard. Global Glamour has held on to favouritism here at around $3.90, with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle. Fox Play is clearly second in the market.
