Black night for the Boks

By Brendon Meynell / Roar Rookie

The New Zealand All Blacks have beaten South Africa 57-15 at Kings Park in Durban overnight, in what was a dark day for international rugby union.

The reigning World Champions are breaking records along the way to send an ominous warning to the wider rugby union fraternity of how dangerous they are, and how far behind the rest of the world is.

A record-equalling 17 matches it has been since the All Blacks were last beaten, and will play their next match on home soil at Eden Park in Auckland in just a couple weeks time against the under performing Wallabies.

After beating Australia 18-10 last weekend it seemed as though South Africa had turned a corner during the Rugby Championship, however they would need to drastically improve against the world’s number one ranked team, an improvement they just couldn’t make in time.

The game was in the balance at the half time break with a poor kicking display by Beauden Barrett with the wind at his back, while Morne Steyn kicked into the wind brilliantly to keep the home side in the contest behind 12-9.

A second half blitz by the All Blacks however saw them secure their sixth-straight bonus point victory, while also breaking their record for biggest winning margin against South Africa (previously 36 points), and the most points piled against South Africa (57 – previously 55).

Only an unselfish act by Beauden Barrett, who popped the ball up to Ben Smith to score a try midway through the second half, stopped another record falling during the match with no All Black ever scoring three tries against the Sprinboks, despite 18 players scoring two.

Barrett, All Black winger Israel Dagg and TJ Perenara all added their name to the list and were all in the hunt to break the record before late tries to Codie Taylor, Ben Smith and Liam Squire saw the All Blacks break the 50-mark.

With South Africa arguably the second best team in world rugby, the overnight result must send an ominous warning to all others who stand in the All Blacks’ way as they already start the campaign for a third straight World Cup.

All Blacks 57; Tries: TJ Perenara 2, Dagg 2, Barrett 2, Taylor, Smith, Squire. Barrett 2 con, Sopoaga 3 con;

South Africa 15; Steyn 5 pen;

Yes clearly you know bugger all of South Africas politics and sports, Beast my friend is a has been there to fill a quota being a black player at best average over his best days, Habana was one of the old time greats, although another has been, he has become to slow, midge Juan De jong is an utter joke for rugby with no rugby skills whatsoever, the Allblacks knows this and there targeted that channel with de Jong failing as expected in defence and attack, These two and de jong and de Allende both Albaster Coetzees provinsial buds from Cape town! Mohoje is another average player, you see him so awesome you play him in your team replacing your best and we will see what you have to say... Now i count five players that is either average or just filling in as a quota player.... Now lets go and take 5 of All blacks players in each those postions and replace them with these players and see how well you do then eh??? Lets move on to the coaches... Albaster Coetzee is a coloured person which is irrelevant but it serves as a point. What irritate me mostly is his and his incompetent coaching staff's reseme to coach to Boks, it looks to say the least dire.... They have got virtually no experience but because of the ever political interferance From the Anc government in all South Africas sport especially rugby a mainly white mans sport there they feel that quotas have to be shoved down throughts and worst of all He AC is an INCOMPETENT QUOTA COACH, so my hypocritical friend if you are so lenient on supporting the quota system im South Africas rugby maybe you can be so lenient and ask how many whites represent the black South African soccer team, you see it is all politics!!!. Hence Albaster being there and you can see his qualifications manifesting in the end result of each game or a you blind? He plays players out of positions, a scrumhalf in wing position, a fullback in halfback postion and the other way around, he selects quota players because he has too before he could consider anything else firstly, he select old oversees hasbeens praying their experience will pull the team through for every where Albaster lacks in providing as a coach,mthis all whilst the top super 18 player and performers are left back home to warm the benches for there provincial teams and not selected, these are only but some problems thats is putting the once mighty Springbok where is currently at.. A lot of the upcoming South African rugby youth are going and playing oversees as they know merit in South Africa means nothing... You go and enjoy your hollow victory my friend as you cleary do not miss the days of quality rugby tests matches where only the best in each position was good enough..it must be a comforting feeling everytime knowing you never ever again have to really worry about a competitive Springbok team that kept you on the edge of your seat till that final whistle blew... I called that a true test match....oh what happened to those respecting and respected All black rugby players and supporters, all i hear and read now is mindless boasting....pitty..

"a win against Argentina is like beating the BYE in the NRL" Aside from being a blow hard,you completely disrespect your opposition. Stay classy.

I think the people protesting in 81 were not only doing so due to players selected in the Springboks. I think you will also find many non-South Africans disagreeing with the quota system, however I don't think it is worthy of the same street protests and flour bombs. Also Reverse Racism does not exist, its just Racism.

Interesting article not sure that the international game is threatened by AB dominance, but perhaps enhances the sport... Let's take a look at previous sure things in sport and see if too good is good or bad. Boxing: Tyson in the 80s was unstoppable and like him or hate him he revitalised the sport after the legendary era of the Ali, Frazier, foreman etc and brought his own aggressive style to the ring Sprinting: Bolt 3 consecutive Olympic gold in 100m 200m and relay. Amazing consistency Tennis: Federer 2002-2010 dominant in the tennis world, a sure thing and wonderful to watch. Over time Federer made tennis more competitive, as his rivals work harder to catch up. Golf: Woods, untouchable. Golf is no longer the white mans game thanks to this incredible player (no pun intended) So yes ABs are showing the rest of the world the way, and I'm bloody pleased they are because the sport will improve globally over time. As much as it hurts we should embrace this legendary team, and the way they play

The Wallabies ripped England to pieces when they had front foot ball. Allblacks wont have problems with that. England might improve by 2018, but if they were playing this November no doubt NZ easily to win.

The question is a simple one. Is Allister Coetzee the best coach in South Africa? Is Stick the best assistant coach? Is Mohoje the best in SA in his position. Is Juan de Jongh the best in his position? Just ask that question for every player, every individual in the South African National tugby team's management.

When a team or individual take a sport to another level it is ludicrous to say it is in trouble. Tennis flourished with Federer as did Golf with Woods, both had periods of 12 months just a dominant as the AB's are rounding off.

Please forgive me if I am not totally familiar with the ins and outs if SA rugby. Please take these comments on face value. It strikes me watching the game tonight on YouTube (having missed it live) that this was not a SA team filled with black players selected on the basis of positive discrimination. The only black players in the pack were the beast and Mahoje. The beast must be just about the best prop SA have produced ever. Mahoje is a fine player in my opinion. The only non-white players in the backline were DeJong and Habana (one of the games greatest). I do not understand your complaints.

Piffle Brendon Meynell; Bob East (65) below writes ABs have been winning all his life, and let it continue, that's an AB winning attitude. Unfortunately Union is about the only thing NZ excels at. If NZ excell at any thing else they sell it off (hasn't quite happened with the ABs). Including selling off their media to AU interests. Murdoch & Fairfax don't hold anything NZ dear to them, from my observations the opposite. The idea above comes from the AU owned media, people like Brendon have been brought up thinking about NZ negatively; if AU or SA were winning (cricket) the concept above would not be entertained. By the way Brendon is that an WBy jersey your wearing. Since the AB winning streak all sorts of negative cast rugby articles have been written about the ABs not to mention the gorging of Smith, (Duncan Johnson and crew).

That is the joke in all of this. What the world is really saying is "polite reverse racism" is good.

Yes amazing how some still view the pre 92 era as 'normal', the era of real rugby between SA and NZ. The things we put up with, gave up, all in the pursuit of keeping SA in the game. I mean an entire continent withdrew from the Olympics because we agreed to play SA on their terms. Crazy days.

Pointless hyperbole all this "Rugby in trouble" stuff. I expect it from hacks with papers to sell, but not free access fan sites. I'm an England fan pleased (and pleasantly surprised) by recent progress. I don't think we are anything like comparable with the ABs at present (though I think on a good day we'd give them a good game at Twickenham). England fans are enjoying recent success and can dream about emulating the 2003 RWC winning time. The Aussies remain what to me they have mostly been in this sport, mercurial types who can whip you one day and fold faster than superman on laundry day the next. South Africa are in a trough, but have recovered from worse ones in the past. Beyond them Wales, Ireland, Argentina and even Scotland are all capable of beating top four teams on their day and even of being top four teams themselves at least for periods. Perhaps the only anomaly at present is a sustained period of French under-performance. So where is the crisis? Lots of TV money. Big crowds for internationals and top tier club matches (at least in Europe). Expansion across the planet (on a modest but sustainable trajectory). And an all All Black team which is setting new standards of fitness, skill and collective intelligence. Oh and because of the efforts of those dreadful TV people and their money ("hate em") I actually get to see these exotic Southern Hemisphere types as well as my beloved England, whereas when I was growing up we merely heard rumours and saw smudgy black and white photos. My wife and kids may not be happy about the state of modern rugby, but I'm loving it.

We'll need to split the AB's into North Island vs South.

The game is in trouble in Australia and maybe SA. In NZ, the Northern hemisphere and Argentina it is doing really well. Also flourishing in North America by all accounts. 7s as a sport is thriving. Do not confuse Australia's issues with the game as a whole.

Yes Taylorman, that was a real tragedy that happened in those dark days of South African history. The world gave SA a lot of stick because of Apartheid. Funny how everyone is quiet now about the reversal of fortunes isn't it? No mention of political interference in SA rugby by the IRB...why's that - wrong colour? Where are the flour bombs like in 1981 Taylorman?? Hypocrites!

Yes I recall such a time when we couldn't pick OUR OWN players ON MERIT due to...yes you guessed it, that same political interference. But hey, we supporters stuck in there and supported our team regardless. Not saying two wrongs make a right, but please don't preach being its only victi!ms.
