Bid for second Queensland A-League team drawing closer

By News / Wire

A consortium is in place that is prepared to bankroll a second A-League team in Brisbane, according to Miron Bleiberg.

The former coach of Brisbane Roar and the now-defunct Gold Coast United, Bleiberg says he is part of a group that is serious about backing another franchise in south-east Queensland and is ready to act, now that expansion is firmly back on the A-League agenda.

“I’m not authorised to speak on their behalf, but I can tell you there is movement,” Bleiberg told AAP.

“There is a group of local people, they are capable, they have the money, most importantly they love the game, and they are ready.”

Bleiberg would not divulge the identities of those involved or if they are attached to an existing bid group or region of the city.

However Bleiberg declared in August his support for a second A-League team in Brisbane in the belief that competition would force Brisbane Roar, who have been crippled by a string of off-field issues over the past two years, to clean up their act.

Bleiberg, who is independently wealthy outside of football, even claimed he would be happy to contribute to the cause himself.

Football Federation Australia last week declared expansion was now a priority and is seen as the best method of getting more out of the next broadcast deal, due to kick in for the 2017-18 season.

No timeframes have been set, but it’s anticipated two new franchises based in larger metropolitan markets will be added over the next two or three seasons to make the A-League a 12-team competition.

The question is whether FFA believes a second Brisbane team would cannibalise support for the Roar or if it would invigorate the local market to the same extent seen in Sydney and Melbourne, where derbies have become a key part of the football calendar.

Bleiberg suspects there are enough lapsed Roar supporters, or football fans who never jumped on board to begin with, to make it a success.

“It will be beneficial for both parties. You have a derby, at least 30,000 at Suncorp, more media interest, more fans, and more chances for local players,” he said.

How many people support the Strikers? I would wager that the majority of the people who went to Strikers games in the NSL are now Roar supporters. And I would wager that they would choose Roar now over Strikers.

Waz - Yes the "interest " is still there but don't forget the "money angle" The people who run the Strikers cannot help but be aware of the inherent fiscal problems within an HAL franchise, after all, don't ever forget they, the Strikers management ,were in fact an "ever present" when the Roar's administration was operating under a sub-lease with the Strikers at Perry Park,so in fact were well aware of the financial problems, probably even before the FFA. "Interest" is endemic with any football club, every club would like to participate at the highest level ,but--------money talks louder than words and in fact Miron's "promised $250,000 investment" although thoroughly admirable, is actually a "drop in a bucket" that would barely account for about 5 players wages for an active football season ,ie 6 months. Now I don't have to tell you that it would require a lot more than that to set up another HAL franchise. Now this is not a "put-down" on the idea, ,it is simply a fiscal fact of life. Cheers jb.

@ dinoweb There's at least three groups interested in a HAL licence. There is a local consortium circling Roar and waiting for "the right time", there is this consortium which is presumably different, and then there is the Strikers who believe me, are absolutely desperate to regain "their place" in the HAL - jb may current me but I believe they are the only senior club in Brisbane with an interest. There isn't a geographic location like the west of Sydney desperate for a team so we are left with the football community which numbers a good couple of hundred thousand which Roar tap into about 15% of for routine games so there would seem to be an opportunity either for Roar to grow or a second team, maybe both.

Stuart - In view of the degree intimated by your nom de plume would it not be better to put some figures together based on the normal questions asked when proceeding to set up a business. We are looking at a prospective organisation that would have to have somewhere in the region of 50 full time salaries to be met before a dollar can be earned. That cost does not include the ancillary costs that would be incurred in setting up a headquarters,a ground on which to play etc etc etc. Maybe armed with those questions you would like to re-assess your opinion. Cheers jb.

Townsville needs a 30,000 seat indoor stadium Like Docklands in Melbourne. Both the Federal and QLD Government would probably end up footing the bill for this project. So no return of the NQ Fury FC until this occurs. Gold Coast United FC needs a better owner for starters compared to Clive Palmer..Plus a nickname like Live Savers for example. Robina is suitable enough stadium but the caller from ABC Radio Newcastle Arron Kearney referred to Robina and the Gold Coast as the city of no soul in Australia.. Woolongong and Canberra should also be considered for expansion of the A League.. My options for the second team in QLD is : 1. Redlands United Reds FC based at QEII Stadium 2. Gold Coast United FC plus with a nickname e.g. Live Savers in regards to what I saw in Newcastle NSW at Hunter Stadium. Based at Robins Stadium in QLD. 3. Brisbane Strikers FC 4. NQ Fury FC.

Brisvegas population of 1.5 million people is the 3rd largest city in Australia.QE II Stadium where the 1982 Commonwealth Games which has largely been a white elephant could be utilsed for a second team in Brisvegas for the A-League. One big problem solved..

Redlands Council area in Brisbane is seperate to Brisbane City Council. Rivalry created. Redlands United Reds FC can be based at QEII Stadium from 1982 Commonwealth Games with a 60,000 capacity Woolongong Wolves FC to return before Third Sydney Team.

I'm not sure about that. Fußball ist unser Leben was a poster of great integrity and took a very dim view on posters using multis. Furthermore, he often said he did not write articles for the roar because he did not have the knowledge or experience, much preferring to take pot shots at everyone else. Nemesis has come to us as a writer of great quality, a thinker, one willing to look outside the box, to put forward challenging ideas. He writes with intelligence and great insight. While we all loved, respected and now miss Fußball ist unser Leben, at least with Nemesis we have a writer with great intellect, who puts forwards ideas without attacking the man. Sure, some of his ideas are a bit out there and have zero chance of ever coming to fruition, but he argues his case well and is willing to publicly state them and be challenged with robust argument. The Roar needs more writers like Nemesis.

It's generally the football clubs which need saving on the Gold Coast rather than people.

Certainly a better owner than Clive Palmer was on the Gold Coast.

Yes a second team could work in SE QLD. Redlands United Reds FC based out of QEII Stadium or the return of the Brisbane Strikers. also Gold Coast United returning would be good if you can get a better owner than Clive Palmer. I saw the Jets play Gold Coast at Hunter Stadium or McDonald Jones. Redlands would need a slight change of nickname e.g. Reds to Red Devils like Manchester United FC and the Korean National Football Team. Gold Coast would need a nickname e.g. In Newcastle at Hunter Stadium I noticed Gold Coast fans wearing Live Saver Caps. That could be a good nickname for Gold Coast United. i.e. the Live Savers.

yeah, i am 100% sure nemesis, Horto, Ian, Uncle Junior and FUiL are the same. so funny how FUiL tries to play the knowledgeable expert yet he resorts to these games. Nemesis is his best alter ego and actually writes good stuff

dinoweb- part of your statement rings true,"There MIGHT be business people out there prepared to stump up the cash" but that simple observation throws up a multitude of questions that have to be analysed before making huge assumptions. (1) Just how much money is needed.? (2) If ,as has been suggested,it is a consortium of contributors, who then is going to oversee the running of the club and attend to the everyday workings of a professional organisation. and what method of control is going to be used, board, committee or what?., (3) After the initial costs are met, purchase of licence and procurement of operating headquarters, hire of staff, procurement of players etc (all have to be paid immediately,) how long before it could be expected to acquire an income stream from the investment?. Now there may well be "business men" around with that type of disposable income (would $20,millions be in order?) but I seriously question if there are people willing to invest who would not ask those same questions and it is there the words of an acquaintance, deeply involved in the game, comes to mind when he states,---- "the numbers just don't add up" Cheers jb.
