Perth loss well behind us: Kiwis

By News / Wire

A buoyant New Zealand will be a far bigger test for Australia than in Perth earlier this month, according to Kiwis prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

David Kidwell’s side were well beaten at nib Stadium by Mal Meninga’s Kangaroos, but Waerea-Hargreaves, returning after a three-year international exile, believes nothing should be read into that result ahead of Saturday’s (Sunday AEDT) Four Nations clash in Coventry.

“We’ve put it behind us and this is a different game in a different country and we’ll certainly be better for the run after beating England,” the Sydney Roosters prop told AAP.

“We know we didn’t play our best in Perth but for a lot of us it was a first hit-out in about six weeks.”

Despite being the No.1 ranked team in the world and the reigning Four Nations champions, the Kiwis were largely written off by sections of the local media before their 17-16 win over the hosts.

With the excitement surrounding Sam Burgess’ return and the appointment of Wayne Bennett as coach, confidence was high in England following the 2-1 series win over the Kiwis a year ago.

But after the Shaun Johnson-inspired tourists spoiled the party Waerea-Hargreaves said there’s a belief coursing through a team that have made a habit of finding their best form for major tournaments.

“We’ve been based in Leeds after being in London and we’ve had a great camp,” he said.

“I really love Leeds, it’s a fun place to be based and as a group the boys are very close.

“I think that was shown in that defensive effort against England, everyone just kept turning up for one another.

“Australia are a great side but we’re pretty good as well and we know that if we’re at our best theres no reason why we can’t win.”

So what's your point exactly? That there's not enough tests in NZ? That NZ don't play enough tests after the nrl season? Or that Perth doesn't deserve a test match? Didn't NZ just play a 3 match series against England in the mother country?

I've no problem with replacing though.

So what if they have never had one before? Depending on the media contracts in place, I suppose they can have Tests whenever they can organise one. The more Tests, the merrier.

They would have to play the same type of game the Sharks played against NQueenland and Melbourne. That's how you beat Australia...a Barbarians team of the combined England and NZ could do it. But individually I'm beginning to doubt their ability.

They don't play a test there ever year or every second year - outside of 4 nations there is never an end of season NZ test anywhere BTW why not answer the question. There was an Anzac day (roughly) test this year wasn't there?

I too would like the Sassenachs to win. NZ should get over us especially on the heavier tracks of England. The Kangaroos had an easy first up match and will be under done and typically complacent v the Kiwis. NZ had a tough first up v a very good English side and that will ensure they put the Kangaroos to the sword - me thinks.

Im not forgetting how good those guys have been for NZ in the past and I would probably replace SKD as he just seems to be struggling. Nightingale still going ok

I think a lot of people forget that both SKD and Nightingale have both been very good for New Zealand over many Test matches. Nightingale, in particular, is one of the most freakish of finishers in Test football. So I think that one or two games is no cause for concern and that the two have earned the right to have an off day but... well, for their sake and for New Zealand's sake, one would hope that they don't have too many more, if any.

I think part of the issue is Kata & Rapana are both playing for the 1st time at this level & Kahu is also a relative newbie. If you add Fusitua to the side, that's a very inexperienced back 5. SKD & Nightingale have both been poor, but I think part of the logic in their selections is they bring experience to a young backline.

David Fusitua is one player that should be in the side. He is a very good player and offers more than Nightingale and SKD. Its probably just Kidwell not really expecting to be the coach so he may not have assessed these guys as much as if he knew he was.

I've always supported the underdog. I used to support New Zealand in international league but after the last World Cup, I realised I wanted England to win. So now I support England in Test football. I think a strong England is the best thing for international rugby league, more so than a strong Australia or New Zealand. But all three would be good too.

I know what your saying, cause after years of defeats the Kiwis' then won 3 in a row, but really I didn't want that to continue for too long. You've gotta have games in the balance, otherwise it just becomes a bit boring in any sport. As for missing Foran and RTS; well they are really missing Mannering, Whare and Hiku too. But I thought they would have blooded Martin, and that Fisher-Harris is electric too! The bench for the kiwis' apart from Brown have been awesome. Blair is just getting better and better, Taupau just rocked those Burgess boys! SKD is gone, bring on the Fuss or Kahu!

NZ aren't playing too badly for a side missing 2 of their starting spine players. Luke and Johnson aren't exactly in top form either. Though Johnson was way better against England. Add RTS and Foran and the side is on another level. I think their biggest issue is they have a fullback that can't create in attack. Kahu is very solid at the back but he lacks that spark in the line. Not sure who else they could add in though. Lolohea is definitely not the answer. He's been rubbish most of the year. Maybe switch Kahu and Rapana.

That's true. You know, watching the Australian team play against Scotland, sure, Scotland are a few big rungs below Australia but I felt that a side like New Zealand could have capitalised a lot more on their chances. Earlier this year Cameron Smith said that for all intents and purposes, unlike the older days, Australia and New Zealand are equals now. So for me, it doesn't matter who wins per se since there will always have to be a loser in a match between two champions. For me, there is absolutely no reason why New Zealand can't beat Australia this weekend other than themselves. And similarly with Australia. There is no reason why they should automatically win. But of course, these things all depend on the day so as they say, may be the best team win.

If the Kiwis are a chance they will need players like JWH to play a lot better than they have. Hes 1 of the better props in the NRL but hasn't really done a lot for the Kiwis.

That's a bad omen for the rest. Hopefully New Zealand and England can step up.
