Celtic vs Borussia Mönchengladbach: Champions League live scores, blog

By Connor Bennett / Editor

Celtic will be out for revenge when they travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach after losing to the German side two weeks ago at home, leaving them reeling at the bottom of their Champions League group. Join The Roar for all the live highlights and action from 6:45am (AEDT).

Celtic are flying high at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings, undefeated from ten games and with a massive lead over the second-placed Rovers.

Their Champions League form has left a lot to be desired though.

They’ve been up against it in a pool consisting of European giants Barcelona and Manchester City, as well as today’s opponent.

A thrilling three-all draw against City has been their only bright light in the tournament so far, as they sit at the bottom of Group C with plenty of work to do.

Second half goals to Lars Stindl and Andre Hahn took the spoils away from Celtic last time around, as Mönchengladbach kept their chances at a top two-finish alive.

Despite being on the road in the return fixture, Celtic will be fired up and out to get that win back after some stellar form at domestic level.

Mönchengladbach may have taken that win, but they’re still on the back foot in Group C, after a pair of losses to start their campaign.

They’re also coming off the back of a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich and a goalless draw in the Bundesliga since their last outing with Celtic.

They sit just one point behind Man City in their hunt for the last 16 and have the chance to take outright second from them with a win today.

Team News
Celtic will be missing a few players for the clash, namely Kolo Toure, Jozo Simunovic, Leigh Griffiths and Kieran Tierney.

Toure and Simunovic have both remained in Scotland as they battle a fitness cloud and look to be back for their Premiership campaign.

For Mönchengladbach, Ibrahima Traore, Andreas Christensen and Alvaro Dominguez all missed their last league clash on Saturday, a draw against Eintracht.

Mamadou Doucoure, Marvin Schulz and Josip Drmic missed that same game, but all three have returned to training and the subsequent squad for this fixture against Celtic.

Prediction
Mönchengladbach got the job done on the road against Celtic despite being in very different situations domestically.

There’s no reason why they can’t do it again, this time at home in front of a notoriously passionate Borussia fanbase.

Celtic are by far the best side in Scottish football, but they’re still a touch behind the big guns of Europe. Expect a massive effort from the men in green, but they’re likely to fall short.

Great game from two great clubs, but not quite the result either team would have been happy with. Given Celtic's usually terrible away form, they did well to dig deep and fight back to rescue a point, but with only Man City and then Barcelona still to play. Rogic is a class act and with him on the pitch you can always rely on him to make chances, but nfortunately hes developed a reputation for not being able to finish games

I don't think that's necessarily true. From 60'-70' coaches usually will sub one of their midfielders. The fact Rogic is now the 1st choice No.10 for Celtic, even for Champions League matches indicates how far he's progressed. Just looking at today's other UCL matches: - Aaron Ramsay came off at 75' for Arsenal (he assisted for the equaliser) - Kimich off at 64' for Bayern - Rakitic off at 61' for Bacelona - Fernando & Navas off at 60' and 71' for ManCity All the above players are "genuinely top notch midfielders in Europe" It's normal for midfielders to be changed. Some work harder than others. I watched Celtic's first half & Rogic was doing a power of work - virtually box to box; rather than traditional No.10. His touch was super.

He went off a lot earlier than I expected (69th). You need to have that ability to play the full game, or at least 80+ minutes

It seems like cardio is the only thing keeping Rogic from being a genuinely top notch player in Europe. Would like to see him playing 90 soon.

FULLTIME There goes the final whistle and Celtic bag a point on the road thanks to a second half penalty. Not the result Monchengladbach were after in their hunt for that top two finish in Group C. Man City has just beaten Barca as well, meaning Borussia are now even further behind those two sides with only a couple of fixtures remaining. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

90' +3 Borussia with a short counter attack but they just didn't have the numbers in hand to pull it off against the scrambling Celtic defence. The visitors have possession and could be the last play of the game coming up. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

90' +2 Henderson inside the box on the right edge. He has plenty of numbers in the middle... but the cross goes straight into the waiting arms of Sommer. Wasted opportunity there. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

90' +1 Borussia clear the ball up past halfway, but Celtic have it straight back in the enemy half. They're right on top of this contest late. The home side just holding on. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

90' Sinclair pressing hard for the visitors down the left sideline, he finds some room but has two defenders reigning down on him. Can't win the corner and gives away a foul out of frustration more than anything when he loses the ball. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

89' Turnover in their own half and Borussia are just gifting Celtic these late chances. Time running out for both sides to find a winner though. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

87' Celtic with all the possession and field position in the last couple of minutes. Superb ball in behind the defence from Roberts... he finds McGregor in front of goal!! BUT HE MISSES!!! How did he miss that? He's hooked it off the left boot past the post and Borussia somehow come out of their own penalty area with the draw still in tact. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

86' HENDERSON!! Nearly his first touch of the game. The space was there just on the edge of the box, he tried to curl it in off the left foot, but he just hit it a bit too low and it skidded along the ground, passing the left post and rolling over the back for a goal kick. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

85' Celtic probing now. Working it from side to side up in the home teams half. Borussia holding strong at the back and Celtic continue to just move it around, waiting for that gap to open up. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

83' Celtic are stuck in their own half, they need to find a way to get the ball back up the other end of the park. Borussia pressing hard up front now. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

82' Borussia having a real crack at the Celtics penalty area now, they have numbers in hand... good movement around and the defence is beginning to crumble. RAFFAEL!!! He's just come on but that won't stop him from having a crack. He shoots high over the top. The shot was on, the execution was just a bit off. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

81' SUBSTITUTION The captain Stindl has been brought off for the home side and Raffael has come in his place. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1

80' Hahn has a dig from range!! He had a bit more space than he thought and could have ran it in closer to the box, but he hits it regardless and misses wide to the right. Mönchengladbach – 1 Celtic – 1
