Match preview:

Australia face their nemesis New Zealand in Round 2 of the Rugby League Four Nations tournament in Coventry. Join us on The Roar from 7pm AEDT for live coverage.

Both teams secured important wins in their first hitouts – Australia comfortably beating Scotland 54-12 and New Zealand scraping past host nation England 17-16 with a Shaun Johnson drop-goal the difference.

Australian coach Mal Meninga threw something of a spanner into the game’s lead up when announcing his squad, resting joint 2016 Dally M Medallist Cooper Cronk and replacing him with North Queensland half Michael Morgan. Some pundits saw this selection as arrogance from the tournament favourites, others for the pragmatic action that it surely is. In any event, it may add a bit of fuel to New Zealand’s fire.

The other big news from the Australian camp during the week was a serious knee injury to winger Josh Mansour. His torn ACL will see him on the sidelines for the better part of a year – horrible news for this tournament and more importantly, for Panther fans back home. Valentine Holmes will come in to cover.

As for the men from the land of the long white cloud, New Zealand coach David Kidwell has a host of injury concerns from the win over England. Prop Jared Waerea-Hargraves is out with a leg issue, he’s replaced by Greg Eastwood. Gerard Beale also comes onto a wing to replace Jason Nightingale who has hurt an ankle.

As always in the international game, the battle of two massive forward packs will have a direct influence on how the game plays out. Big, big prop Shannon Boyd has made quite the impact in his first two internationals for Australia and will look to keep that good form going.

Boyd, Matt Scott and David Klemmer will back themselves to set a good platform for Morgan and Thurston, while Kiwi halfback Shaun Johnson is relying on Jesse Bromwich and Adam Blair to get rolling. You can be certain that joint 2016 Dally M medallist and human wrecking ball Jason Taumalolo will get a lot of carries as well.

The ‘X factor’ for this game is the format of the tournament – with both teams only needing to win their games against England to make the final, New Zealand may well be forgiven for having one eye on their next game against Scotland, a certain win you would expect. Will that have an impact, or will the pride of international football be enough to make this one a blockbuster?

Prediction
While players like Morgan and Holmes are new to the international game, Morgan is well used to playing with Jonathan Thurston and Holmes is a premiership winger. There’s still more than enough quality to get the job done.

Australia by 6.

How disresectful is the cannel 9 commentary. Talking over the presentation.

Cheers Raugeee. If we have a close look at the action of Woods, you can see that he has zero leg drive after the initial contact with the defense. One would imagine that to compensate, one would hit the line hard and attempt to scatter the opposition. The problem here is that Woods doesn't hit the line initially with any sort of venom, he's a sort of corpse in a green and gold jersey. There is a lot of dribble being spouted by others on this forum about his 'role' and that he is there to tackle. He is not. If he weren't in the team somebody else would make the tackles, he is there to bend the line and to create space which he fails at consistently.

Completely agree Mr White. The Warlock of Concord belongs in a tower somewhere brewing potions, not on the international pitch. His ability to bend the line pales in comparison to the other forwards, and flopping into a tackle as the third man in barely qualifies as a real tackle. His stats are padded.

My clumsy way of saying flat footed Dean. I'll do better next time!

Ferguson pushed up too far?????????? He made the tackle and was at marker. It was Darius Boyd's job to organise cover for the absent winger.

No the ref wasnt a problem at all baring the 2 penalties in a row in the first half resulting in the first Aus try. I just dont know why they dont use neutral refs. They could of had the Aus ref do the England v NZ game first up but decided differently. Please have a neutral for the final

The ref was the issue? Considering the Kiwis all play in the NRL comp I don't think the nationality of the ref from this comp means anything. But I'd say that the final would have an English ref (if it's Aus v NZ).

So does that mean every NSW player should be disregarded? They all have poor records against QLD. Of the forwards Woods made the most runs. Most tackles (ex Smith). And most offloads. It was a good game. Agree with Frizell on the bench. But in place of Thaiday.

So NZ played England with an English ref, Aus with an Aus ref. Do we get a kiwi ref for the final?

The Roos were lucky to get away with the win in the end, when it looked like they'd put 5 tries on the Kiwis early on. Sensational game from Ferguson. Good effort from Kata. Thurston offered little without Cronk. Johnson was ordinary until the 70th minute. The goal kicking duties need to be handed to Kahu. Thaiday may have played his last game in the Green and Gold. He's carrying too much weight. I'd rather see Frizell (or Josh Jackson) steaming onto the ball with an angled run.

Very little impact on every run he made where the others were bending the line at will. Crucial knock on when Kangaroos would've had good field position. He has a shocking record at rep level. If he was an 80 min player he might be worth it. Completely overrated.

He has a shocking record at Rep level. That was the first time Woods has played in a winning side against the Kiwis. He was the starting prop for the last 3 losses v NZ. He has played 11 SOO for 7 losses. Endurance? He only played 49mins. If he was a genuine 80min player then maybe his lack of impact might be ok. Put Boyd (33 mins 28 tackles, 7 runs 86 metres) back at starting prop and let him play 50 mins. Put Frizell back on the bench.

Yep, I don't see how anybody could see the comparative stats and not think that Woods had a good game. High work rate, good endurance. Won't make the highlights reel. So perhaps that's why some don't rate him?

That's his role within the team; more tackles and work rate that the other middle third forwards -- this comes with less impact on each individual action, but that's the nature of power and endurance.

A combination of people seeing what they want to see, and people who just don't rate players who are more parts work rate than impact. A look at the Warriors forward recruitment over the last decade should explain pretty obviously why work rate is important in at least some of the forward pack...

I don't know if it's a matter of being spooked since it's been happening regularly.

Matt Scott 9 runs, 107 metres, 27 tackles (two misses) Klemmer 10 runs, 159 metres, 18 tackles (one miss) Cordner 17 runs, 162 metres 25 tackles (three misses) Woods 17 runs, 146 metres 37 tackles (no misses) Woods 2 offloads, all others above combined for 1. Some tough judges out there!!!

Ferguson was outstanding - had a feeling he would have a big game. Klemmer and Cordner were also very good. Inglis was quiet. The Aussies seemed to be in control for most of the match and appeared to be doing just enough to win. It was only the occasional bit of brilliance by Johnson that kept the Kiwis close. The Kiwis are struggling with only one key playmaker and Cronk will be back for the Aussies in the final.

I should point out that I called Australia by six. Did I put any money on it though? Of course not.
