All Blacks' record run stopped dead in its tracks by Ireland

By CA3ZAR / Roar Pro

Wow – what a game. Ireland versus New Zealand has got to be one of my favourite matches ever!

The All Blacks’ running record of consecutive wins, and all the records on the side, have been stopped by the ultimate underdog, the team everyone was writing off, probably one of the most unlikely teams to beat New Zealand in Europe bar Italy.

A couple months ago, an article showed that, to beat the All Blacks, you not only had to score tries, but you had to score more than 27 points. And when Ireland were leading 30 to 8, the result seemed as locked in as Larry Bird’s third attempt at the three-point challenge.

Credit goes to the All Blacks for the awesome comeback, but it was all for nought when Ireland scored the final try that reverberated across the world. I can’t help but wonder what it was like in Ireland watching the game and partaking in the celebrations!

While sitting in church on Sunday, I sat next to my friend and asked him who he thought won the game. He said the All Blacks, and when I showed him the result, his reaction said it all. The fact the All Blacks lost with a margin of 40 to 29 was probably more than he could handle on a Sunday morning when he hadn’t had breakfast.

As a Kiwi supporter, I can’t help but feel depressed but at the same time overjoyed that Ireland has accomplished what for 111 years seemed impossible.

They righted their wrongs, they prepared well and did their homework, and they fought until the very end. Credit to each Irish player and to the coaching team!

Well done Ireland, the wait is over!

The heartache and last-minute defeats have lead to this; you deserved to beat the All Blacks.

You deserved the win, you deserve everything that comes your way!

Maybe Ireland will lose against Australia but I dont think we will. By the time Australia arrive at the Aviva they will have played 3 November internationals and a whole rugby championship. they will have played very physical sides like Wales, France and Scotland who will have definitely softened the Aussies up and there will be injuries by the time they come to Dublin. By contrast Ireland will have played just three games and should be in full swing. France in particular are brutal at the moment. Australia tend to do better against Ireland in November when they play us early on. Last four November series tests: 22nd Nov 14 Ireland win 15th Nov 13 Australia win - first big game and Schmidts 2nd game in charge. 15th Nov 09 Draw 19th Nov 06 Ireland win I will be watching this match with Aussies in Landsdowne so we better win.

Maybe they've learned...it's just there are no precedents for anyone that wins against the ABs going on to do anything useful after it since 2009, so although it's logical to say...ABs thrashed the Wallabies...three times...Irish beat the ABs, Irish should thrash the Wallabies...it won't happen. If they win it will be hard fought but I'm convinced Ireland will not back up anything close to what they did in Chicago. I think the fact they won will serve to be the very reason they will under perform, and unfortunately most of that will come from inside the heads of the Irish players themselves. Seen it too many times.

Thanks CAZ3zar,tayloman disagree,Ireland have learned just what it takes to win the big ones, their confidence and motivation will be somewhere up there,a shrewd coach and 'viola'' be careful Wallabies.

Oh I see Oz beating the Irish as well. History so consistently has most sides that have just beaten the ABs playing poorly. Something seems to happen to them, possibly a false sense of security and overconfidence. But my guess is you won't see that Irish team again for a while. The mere fact that they won will play with their heads till the cows come home...betcha!? And two weeks is nothing. It's not often you get to get some form of redemption from a one off so soon. Couldn't have been better timed.

Taylorman: Some of the comments on here and elsewhere just fail to amaze, ~ you'd know the type, ~ Like arrogance by the Kiwis coupled with smugness by the All Blacks and Kiwi supporters in general and it goes on, and on, and on. It rankles me mate! I as a New Zealander find the majority of those types of vitriolic type comments quite offensive, and offensive to the general psyche of the ''good old Kiwi rugby supporter" alike! Sure we just tend to ignore them as being nothing more that some folk suffering from that ''inferiority type complex" that most, being relatively unsuccessful against your Team types suffer from, ~ so they vent their crap behind the keyboard and come across as the types also who would never ever dare to say it to any New Zealander face to face which if they did so they would be in grave danger of getting their Olfactory Organ rearranged. New Zealanders are a humble race and will always give out to the Kudos to any successful team who plays well and beats their boys, ~ it may be a bit different when the Kiwi Boys get rolled by any Team that has not played well, but generally they just ''suck it up'' with the thought of "don't worry we'll get you guys next time", that's just the way it is. New Zealand has a great affinity with the Welsh, Irish, and the Scots, not forgetting our "brothers almost in Arms the Bok boys", but there are certain Countries who are a hell of a lot less grateful and you cam deduce from that what you like. The odd few just cannot stand being beaten, time and time again by the All Blacks and they show it whereby the Celtic Brothers and the Boks just take it on the chin, ~ those odd few and their 'hangers on' of usually has beens! That I'm sure is the reason that we will always give out the humble good stuff to the Boyos' the Paddys and the Jocks and Boks when they beat us, ~ at the end of the day we are in the main descended from these wonderful folk! ~ So cheers Cuzzies'! The rest of the nay sayers, can quite literally as you Poms do say "" Naff orf''!!

Nice win Ireland. Keep it up. After initial shock to this, it is a tremendously good thing on so many levels, but particularly for 111 years of trying. C'mon Scotland and Argentina or whom ever.

Yeah well if we're honest I think we're able to celebrate with the Irish so easily because other than it being a genuinely exciting and long overdue win, Hansen and the side have our complete confidence. We know this loss is in context a one off type of loss, a temporary glitch, even if another side manages gets up again this year. Why? Because it has very similar precedents. Oz in Sydney was the prelude to the 18. England in 12 similar. We know the side needs a release of pressure because it happens every time, and this does that. And I don't think it's a fluke that the match is once again at a time when it's probably the least important of the year to win, from a tournament, trophy perspective. We wouldn't be as congratulatory if this was the RC or BC decider. Although it's a great win for Ireland it's once again also an uncannily timed loss for the ABs. I think under the skin kiwis know all this. As a contrast, if they lost again next week, the mood will swing, the analysis will come out, and Hansen will be asked the questions. For now, most are not even bothering to try and work this one out, because the benefits gained from the loss far outweighs those gained from winning that match.

So after this loss, does it mean that the All Blacks will drop DOWN to No. 1 in the World Rankings? Kidding aside. This was a marvellous example of how the game can be played. My dear All Blacks were dominated and bullied, and dare I say it??? Rattled? You just have to love the way this game was played. When last have the All Blacks been beaten in the try stakes? If the Irish can do this consistently - and I suppose that goes for all teams running up against the All Blacks, then world rugby will see and should see tremendous growth. Now, where are those scribes who predicted the death of the game because of All Blacks dominance?

Woodart: Same sentiments here mate. But, why is it that people predominantly from the UK, take the high road by belittling the All Blacks when and if they ever lose? Clive Woodward has had a gleeful swipe at them as has O'Driscoll and a plethora of the usual substandard Journalists who think it's just good fun to do so! The All Blacks don't as a rule get many of these rubbish type " smart alec" jibes from the Irish, Welsh, or the Scots, it always seems to emanate from the Pom area which although predictable as the norm, it really just indicates a 'coming second' syndrome and shows a massive inferiority complex so big that log on their shoulder will eventually just rot up there. Good old Eddie the Mouth; has predicted that the Poms will beat the Kiwis, ~ "onya' Eddie but you'll have to Coach your boys to a better standard than you have in your past endeavours as an International Coach", to even get close. All the very best to Ireland for their win the other night, but I see in a New Zealand rugby column this morning an Irishman (whos' name escapes me) opines that their Kiwi Coach old Joe Schmidt. is the best Coach on the Planet, well good on him for that, but wouldn't he have to Coach a run of 19 successive winning International Test matches before laying claim to that title?

Nothing but plaudits for Ireland. Should the ABs be worried now that the code has been broken? Makes this spring just that little bit more interesting.

agree woodart - if any thing its pleasant. Ireland were so robbed in Dublin a couple of years ago and deserved it then. I'm kinda glad they didn't have to wait so long to get this win. theres a bit of romance to this loss. awesome gameplan, passion, accuracy and nobility . Ireland were clean yet brutal. devoid of niggle and off the ball play. awesome example of not just how to beat the ABs but how to win with style and honour. congrats Ireland. you deserved it

Congratulations to the Irish boys, the coach and management team. Well done. A win well deserved. You guys played hard, didn't give in, and you put my AB's under a mountain of pressure. Something they're not use to. Big congrats again. Irish eyes are not doubt smiling. All Black fan Forever.

Surprised myself how this defeat by the Irish didn't bother me to much. After seeing what such a celebration it was in Ireland, felt proud the Irish saw it was such a big achievement to beat our All Blacks. And they were so gracious in victory. We got out played and out coached for sure to be sure. I think those that say the domination the AB's have been enjoying in recent years is bad for the game, this shows that when they are finally beaten it brings a bright spot light onto the game around the rugby world. Bet there wasn't much soccer on the front sporting pages in Ireland and probably Britain on Sunday morning. The game in Dublin will attract huge interest and a massive audience on TV I reckon.

The Pumas gave the All Blacks a real contest but were smashed by the Wallabies. Ireland have lost few games since they should have beaten the ABs in that thriller in Dublin, so what does this loss actually mean. I fancy the Wallabies to beat Ireland & if they do what would that mean? Is it a 'horses for courses' thing, or an example of any team can rise to the occasion but sustaining that level too difficult which is what separates the All Blacks from the rest. A lot has been made of NZ depth in all positions but key injuries hurt us. For many AB supporters a week is a long time to wait after an unexpected but deserved loss, 2 weeks waiting for revenge is even longer.

Doesn't matter how we feel mate. (Commiserations from this all Black fan though) Ireland came to play and quite frankly Schmidt got the better of Hansen. There's some work-ons for these All Blacks to take away but I am glad they had the class to accept their defeat and embrace the Irish victory. A remarkable day from the boys from Eire. Well done - see you in Dublin

I couldn't have put it anymore succinct, then this headline.......stopped in its tracks for sure, to a team that has finally found itself, after so many close calls, in the past. Well done to Schmidt and the lads, from the Emerald Isle.

Depression is an overstatement but a loss after a tonne of success doesn't hurt so much, If anything it was good experience for the young abs, good promotion of rugby in the us and sponsors are happy. It's going to make for a juicy return match in Ireland, hopefully abs are back to their full strength team. Rugby was the winner on the day, great game!
