Thailand vs Socceroos highlights: World Cup qualifier scores, blog, result

Match result:

A boilover in Bangkok is sealed!

No, it’s not a win for Thailand – it doesn’t need to be. We can wax lyrical about the Socceroos’ performance, or we can pay tribute to the heart and desire shown by the War Elephants in drawing the Asian champions to a stalemate.

It’s their first points of the group after five games, and what a point it is. Deserved on every level.

As for Australia, this can rank as probably their worst effort during the Postecoglou era. They were outplayed on desire, speed and strategy.

Three draws on the trot leaves them teetering on the precipice of qualification. They hang in third place behind Saudi Arabia and Japan, and if the UAE defeat Iraq later this morning, it will be one point separating four teams for two automatic qualification spots.

Australia’s World Cup dreams hang in the balance, after what you can call a pathetic performance.

Final score:
Thailand 2-2 Australia

Match preview:

The Socceroos can reclaim top spot in qualification for the Road to Russia when they travel to Bangkok to take on Thailand tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary for Thailand versus Australia from 11pm (AEDT).

Four games in, and the battle for places in Russia 2018 tightens. Australia’s two draws in October saw the group favourites give top spot to Saudi Arabia. Yet with both Japan and the United Arab Emirates lurking closely behind, anything but three points will make a tough 2017 leg of their campaign even tougher.

Yet the Socceroos’ seeding as Group B top dogs allows them the chance to play Thailand, nominally the group’s weak link, and their status of zero points from four points to this. With Saudi Arabia having to travel to Japan on the same day, all signs indicate Australia reaffirming their credentials.

While this game was never in danger of being cancelled or postponed, given the country’s state of mourning following the passing of their King, it will carry a sombre tone, regardless if the War Elephants were to cause a boilover.

Yet Thailand’s bleak hopes of qualification rest solely on this. Coach Kiatisuk Senamuang will set up his side to nullify the Australian midfield – with the expectations Australia will dominate the ball. A defensive 4-5-1 is likely, with holding midfielders a key element in stifling any momentum for the Socceroos.

Teerasil Dangda has an excellent record with 32 goals from 78 caps, though chances will be few, and he is expected to start alone up front and provide an outlet for his side on the counter. Thailand’s best hopes will rest on their ability to restrict Australia’s space in the centre and limit them to long-range efforts.

For Ange Postecoglou, this game is an excellent chance to gain three points and improve their goal difference to ensure breathing space come the end of the campaign.

The absences of Tomi Juric and Tim Cahill will give an opportunity for either Nathan Burns or in-form Brisbane striker Jamie Maclaren to stake their claim as the side’s striker, with Tom Rogic ready to string his influence in the number 10 role.

Unlike other months in the campaign, this game is a standalone fixture, enabling Postecoglou to name his strongest XI, which will likely also include Mathew Leckie and Robbie Kruse in wide roles.

Prediction
Despite being the away side, Australia will be strong favourites. Anything but three points will be cause for later inquisition, and even a goal glut will only serve to merely fulfil expectations.

Leckie has probably lost his welcome card - too many wrong options once he beats the first defender. Kruse being dissed for offsides and running dead but extra touches by the midfield passers and lack of clear receivers in the box created his low impact (Thailand had up to 7 active attackers in threatening plays - we were lucky to have 2 or 3). Degenak had only one option to defend - stop the play. A team with a good dead ball specialist would kill us if he remains preferred. Milligan should have started in the centre of defence with Sainsbury at right back. Luongo has never impressed me because he runs too front on making him easy meat for defenders - he cannot shield the ball effectively - but I think in this match his one-twos in tight spaces with Mooy, Rogic and Kruse were missed. The lack of strikes on a keeper who could not catch competently was a sign of low confidence. Mooy and Rogic as well as Kruse all guilty here. Early personnel suggestions: Goodwin to replace Leckie Risdon would have monstered the Thai winger - give him a go Bring Nicholls into the squad to stop Mooy getting too comfortable

How does Degenek keep getting a game as the starting right-fullback when he is a centre-back/defensive midfielder? We all saw how Dino Djulbic did when he was played out of position last Sunday! What have Risdon and Geria done to piss off Ange? Perhaps what's most concerning is that we still haven't found an heir to Cahill as the main route to goal. Should we dispense with the idea of trying to use an out and out striker (we've tried Giannou, McLaren, Juric, Bulut isn't getting much game time at WSW) and go with five goal scoring midfielders like Spain did at Euro 2012?

My favourite moment. Jedi missing a teammate 4m away under no pressure whatsoever and Mooy too slow to react before the ball ran out. All it needed was kruse to run offside somehow

FULLTIME: Thailand 2-2 Australia Hopefully, I will be permitted this moment of indulgence, but I would like to thank all at The Roar and its wonderful subscribers, as this is my last live blog for The Roar, at least for a little while. It's been a pleasure to bring many football events (and other sports) to you, with the FIFA World Cup, Euros, the successful Asian Cup campaign notable in my favourites list. I'll be heading off to the UK for a couple of years. Hopefully, I'll get to pen a few pieces for this wonderful site during that time, that brings a great community of sports-lovers together. So thanks to all of you. Signing off now - at fulltime in Bangkok, it finished Thailand 2-2 Australia. Good morning!

FULLTIME: Thailand 2-2 Australia Many thanks for your company, on what has been an otherwise forgettable night for the Socceroos. Australia languish in third spot, and now World Cup qualification is academically out of their hands, should Saudi Arabia and Japan win their remaining games. Australia will return to World Cup qualification action in March 2017, with two fixtures. First is another tough away sojourn, as they travel to neutral ground in Tehran to face Iran on March 23, followed by a welcome home fixture in Sydney against UAE on March 28. Australia will enjoy three home games in the second half of the campaign, but as has been shown repeatedly, this side is no sure thing for qualification. FULLTIME: Thailand 2-2 Australia

FULLTIME: Thailand 2-2 Australia Questions will be asked of Ange Postecoglou's tactics here - with such a long preparation time allowed due to no fixtures played last week, there were no excuses for this, not least for Thailand outmatching Australia on desire and skill for large periods of the game. Australia in the end saved further embarassment due to two Thai defensive errors inside their penalty area allowing Mile Jedinak to seal two spot kicks. No glory can be gleaned from this point. A player who phones it in when the going gets tough. Frankly not the sort I'd want in my team.

'90+4: Last minute of added time to play, and only Thailand look capable. Australia deal with it, but Thailand are still not giving up. Then Irvine has to boom away the cross and concede a corner. One last chance it seems. Thailand 2-2 Australia
