Why Liverpool might run out of steam

By Amrit / Roar Guru

Though it’s early to suggest Liverpool will be unable to maintain its current form, it might prove to be the case towards the end of the season.

Liverpool, this season, has been by far the best team in the league, apart from Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed a fine couple of months, ever since they lost to Burnley.

While Klopp might well be running ahead of his managerial counterparts right now, things might not remain like this for long.

Liverpool has a brittle defence.

Before this weekend, the Reds have secured only one clean sheet, which was against Manchester United.

Liverpool has simply outscored their opponents, time and again.

Whether it be a lucky 4-3 escape in the opening game against Arsenal or a 2-1 win against Swansea earlier in October, they have simply managed to get the ball into the back of the net.

While, there is no denying their class up front – with Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho teaming up superbly with their top goal scorer Sadio Mane – their defence though, looks under-cooked.

How long can they outscore their opponents?

Nathaniel Clyne and Ragnar Klavan can barely be described as great. The only Liverpool player that might fall in that bracket would be Joel Matip.

Mamadou Sakho has been disappointing this season, given he has not played a match. After his 30-day suspension finished in May, he was later sent home by Klopp in the offseason for not following team regulations. That certainly did not help the cause.

Another defensive worry for the Reds has been their inability to defend set-pieces, an integral problem yet to be solved.

It is worth noting too that the Liverpool players have covered the most distance on the pitch by any top-flight team. Liverpool ran 582 kilometres in their first four games.

When you consider that the Reds are the third youngest team, behind Tottenham and Newcastle, you might say it is a good attribute. Yet that is primarily responsible for the lack of fitness and freshness of the players at the end of the season.

So far, Klopp has not shown himself to be a big fan of the rotation policy.

Liverpool also lacks in bench strength.

With over ten first-team players leaving the club this summer, Klopp was left to do a big job to sufficiently bolster the bench strength.

But has it been accomplished?

Though the signings of Georginio Wijnaldum, Sadio Mane, and Joel Matip, along with three others, have certainly added a fresh breath of air to the first-team, it has barely bolstered the bench.

The bench barely has any impressive names.

Can they hold on until May, with injuries and fatigue a part and parcel of the game? Or will the winter transfer window give Klopp another moment to rethink?

Let me know what you guys think.

Newcastle still retains the number 1 slot in the Championship; In EPL, it's Tottenham and Liverpool.

Liverpool "are the third youngest team, behind Tottenham and Newcastle". Out of curiosity, is that out of the 92 league teams? Or is that statistic from last season's Premier League?

Mignolet is a goalie, Wijnaldum is a first-team player, that leaves you with two. Don't forget the FA cup as well After the Southampton game, Liverpool is expecting to be without Adam Lallana for at least three games, take that in mind. Fatigue and injury have often come to haunt title contenders in the past, some have withstood it by having a potent and strong bench. Besides, Klopp has no plan B, as I've said earlier- it's all about attack and win. I would see how they fare against the big boys for their second round of matches. Chelsea looks way sharp with 3-4-3 and you can't count out Manchester City, they have the strongest squad.

It's certainly not dire for Liverpool, that's for sure; However, unless they bolster their squad in the winter transfer window, they might find it hard to sustain these results. By the way, Klopp seems to lack a plan B- it's all attack and outscoring your oppositions- I would see how they would fare in this month and the next.

The suggestion is in the headline 'might' and it's a bloody big one at that! Let's put some facts on the table nobody has scored more goals than Liverpool in the last 12 months in the premier league. This dodgy defence is a bit of a myth seeing as they have a new full back, goalkeeper and central defensive partnership and considering that they are still top of the league I can only see them improving. Furthermore you say a bench comprising Origi, Sturridge, Mignolet and Winauldum is weak? Sorry that's nonsense! Liverpool has a young and very talented squad that is not even playing at it's full potential yet. A couple of very talented prospects which trust me by the end of the season everyone will know about. I think Klopp knows exactly what he's got and these are exciting times ahead for Liverpool. One thing I don't understand is why you should conclude Liverpool will run out of legs given they have no European football because I would have thought that other teams would have been more suited to your headline. Finally I don't know what game you watched when Liverpool played Arsenal because Arsenal where lucky to not concede more goals and the scoreline actually flatters Arsenal because Liverpool absolutely played them off the park at times. Liverpool have beaten Chelsea away, Arsenal away, Crystal Palace away and drew at Tottenham and I think even the most die hard Spurs fan would say Tottenham where lucky to get anything! If that's luck then please sir can Liverpool have some more!

Lol they got a clean sheet. Honestly it doesn't take you Liverpool fans much to start blowing your foghorns at the slightest sniff of success. I expected both Liverpool and Chelsea to be front runners this season due to being far fresher than their competitors - who were otherwise competent enough last season to make it into European play. Tottenham employ a very similar style of pressing to Liverpool and once the Euro schedule kicked in Spurs have struggled to maintain their intensity and have fallen away performance wise in the last few weeks. We will see how the pool (& to a lesser extent Chelsea) handle the deluge of games at Xmas. I also suspect many of Liverpool's major string pullers in attack will be wishing Santa could bring them a snood for Xmas. Brazilians & Africans never fans of snowman construction.

Oh, here's the match review against Southampton Livepool 0 Southampton 0 Liverpool missed several great chances to take the points, but rare profligacy in front of goal has cost them.
