Chris Yarran and Richmond part ways

By News / Wire

Richmond defender Chris Yarran has been released from his AFL contract to deal with mental health issues.

The 25-year-old was traded from Carlton at the end of 2015 but didn’t play a game in Tigers’ colours, having struggled with a calf injury and taken leave to seek mental health treatment.

“Ultimately it was agreed with Chris, and his management, that stepping away from the game is in the best interest of his long-term health and wellbeing,” Richmond football boss Neil Balme said on Tuesday.

Chris, as a Blues supporter you were my favourite - amazing, and then amazingly frustrating at times, but you sure gave us a ride! I was genuinely disappointed when you left us and I am sorry for you that the Richmond venture didn't work out. At the end of the day, your health is more important than chasing a bag of wind around a paddock. Good luck to you - I hope things work out and you can enjoy life again.

I wish Chris well and hope that he can resolve his issues and bounce back. He is a great talent, and I'm disappointed that he was unable to play for the Tigers (for what it's worth, I don't barrack for Carlton or Richmond, but I enjoy watching talented players, no matter who they play for). Mental health probs are invisible.......
