The Wallabies have finalised their bench for the Test against Ireland on Sunday morning (AEDT), with Lopeti Timani dropped from the Australian side entirely.
Michael Cheika left Timani out of the starting side announced earlier this week, opting instead to bring in a veteran performer in Dean Mumm, but put Timani on an extended nine-man bench.
Someone had to be dropped for the final team however and Timani has been that man – a decision that might not be particularly popular, and comes as something of a surprise given Cheika said just two weeks ago that Timani’s form had made him too hard to drop.
“He’s continually making me pick him. That’s the issue – his performances have spoken for themselves,” Cheika said when naming the side to play Scotland two weeks ago.
When naming the side for the Test against Ireland, Cheika said:
“Timani has done absolutely nothing wrong.
“We want to focus a little bit more on our lineout this week and the threat that Ireland might pose there – they’re very good in that area.
“Dean brings a lot of experience and quality in that area – but then we’ll probably lose a bit of Lopeti’s ball carrying too.
“It’s six of one, half a dozen of the other but we decided that was probably an important thing for this game and that’s how we’ll run.”

I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me. I thought that after French test it was obvious that Pocock should play 7, Fardy 6 and Timani 8.

PiratesRugby, you're clearly a fortune teller! Not - the fact that what Pirates sees is so very obvious to many other Roarers is invisible to Cheika is just mind blowing. Of course the Australian pack is getting annihilated.

You said it Peter, and I found it hard to believe. So it comes to pass. Well we all thought he was crazy when he launched Pooper into a Bledisloe, until we saw the logic. And for one ga,e, it worked. Hopin' and aprayin' whatever the 2 Micks are thinking, works!?

McMahon and Timani are both better 6s than Mumm. Mumm shouldn't be in the squad. Hooper should be on the bench. The clown grudgingly picked Timani in the first place and the kid did everything right. So he gets dropped. Interestingly, Foley threw two intercepted passes to the same player and still didn't get dropped. Quade got dropped instead. It's not a conspiracy. It's just plain dumb and Australian rugby fans are getting sick of it. There aren't that many of us left.

You can't have aggressive attack if you don't have the ball or you don't have good ball. Hooper and Mumm with ball in hand aren't going to cause the Irish to tremble either. The clown was getting somewhere with Arnold and Coleman at lock and Timani at 8. We all saw how Pocock dominated the French at 7. The next step was obvious even for the clown. Nope. We underestimated his capacity for stupidity.

Wallabies can win if they play a smart game. Put Ireland under pressure at all times...take their ball carriers early. Counter ruck hard. Compete hard on their throws to lineout. Will get ball from their kicks....attack back off this possesion. No silly or aimless kicks. Plenty of second man/screen passes.....most teams find this hard to deal with. Tap penalties anywhere within 30 metres of the Irish line...don't risk ball into touch and then lose the linout. Play with passion, but control. Cheika must ruthlessly sub anyone not playing wel/below par. Worries......Moore unable to strike for the ball in the scrum. Genia slow to deliver the ball...taking steps and then passing. I think ireland will badly miss Sexton, and it will be a huge credit ti them if they can reach the same level as last week. Just hope it will be a great match, well refereed....and may the best team on the day win.

It is truly baffling that through all Cheika's new players and combinations this year, he has not once selected a traditional balanced backrow. I like Hooper and I like Pocock and I like McMahon, but that doesn't the team is best with all of them in it together! I can only hope it is for a tactical reason like wanting to play a super up tempo game, but I'm sure if the Irish can prevent the ABs playing like that, they can prevent us from doing it. This game really feels like it could be a stumbling block. I hope I'm wrong.
Cynical Play

Yes he does. This is horses for courses. Ireland's no 1 set piece strength is their line out. Many of their plays start with the line out. Disrupt this and you disrupt Ireland. I'm willing to wait and see.

The problem is that the coach and selector(s) are one and the same person. The clown does not answer to anyone.

He wont have to dare them to kick Chook, reckon that's all Ireland will do tonight. Set piece to set piece.

Rather than rant let's think about why. Seems to me the rationale has to be about pace. Cheika has been consistent in promoting a game based on speed to the ball, constant attacking footy and variety. This was the strategy that ran into the English because we couldn't achieve sufficient impact in early phases. Then along came the two big locks and 8. Simmons and Arnold and Kepu and Sio plus Moore must have big games against Ireland. If they do then Pocock will have a big night and Hooper will be free to put pressure around the loose. Mumm has to win lineouts and show up everywhere else. The thing is: NZ embraced the arm wrestle and got away with a win. Cheika looks like he wants to go for aggressive attack. If so, you gotta love it.

Kesmcc What luck, the Irish are ravaged by injuries after the All Blacks softened them up . The men in green are there for the taking and provide we get parity in the scrum and are reffed fairly , the Wallabies will have to much of a high tempo game for them.

I just wish Cheika would stop trying to justify his decisions which to most of us are often quite loopy. Tell us what you really think Michael which is I have got the job until 2019 and I am going to do whatever the hell I want so get used to it. He was a stroppy, belligerent b.....d as a player and takes the same approach to coaching so let's leave him to it and if he gets it wrong, so be it. There is no one else. At worst he is at least entertaining in a myriad of ways.

The fact that the WBs are 3rd for a start with Cheika reverting to form about selections. A win was assured but am not so sure now with Timani out of the 23 and no sound reason had been given for his omission. It seems that Cheika has a low opinion of the Irish by opting to start with Pooperani when it could better have been used in the last 20-30 minutes, ie when a very good Irish back-row has been tamed by Timani/Pocock (Hooper)/Fardy (Mumm).
What!

Timani plays lock for the Rebels mainly so if Timanis a traditional 8 then coaches cant see it. If I had an option of Pocock or Hooper vs Timani Id pick Timani, like, never.

Jeez, for a bloke who played a lot of games in the backrow, and especially at number 8, our Clown in Chief appears to have no clue about how to select a balanced back row or a quality specialist 8.
