Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for 2017?

By The Roar / Editor

And so Australia’s rugby union year is over, and not in the most pleasant of fashions, with the Wallabies finishing up 21-37 losers against England at Twickenham.

It has been a year of transformation for the Wallabies – and a transformation that has been painful at times. We’ve uncovered some potential gems in players like Dane Haylett-Petty, Lopeti Timani and others, but simply put, there’s been a shortage of wins.

2016 wasn’t the year Australia wanted it to be. Four matches against England, three matches against New Zealand, and not a solitary victory among them – dissapointing to say the least.

However, it’s time to turn our attention to the future. Can 2017 be a better year for the Wallabies? And if so, how?

Is it time for some of the old hands to move on? Are there younger players who need to be moved up and given more responsibility? What other kinds of changes can be made to improve performance?

2017 is important, but there most also be at least one eye kept on the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. So what changes need to be made?

There will, we bet, be a variety of opinions on the matter, and in this week’s Roar Forum you are invited to let us know in the comments what yours is.

For your reference, here’s the full team from the Test against England:

1) Moore is pst his best unfortunately and seems to have no clout/tact with refs. Some good depth in this slot, time to move on. 2) Ummmmm Mumm. His isn't even good enough to be getting a pine ride. Timani and Fardi are far better options. Can't see two open sides as sustainable long term. 3) I don't know the solution but Phipps is a problem. Surely can't be the next best behind Genia? 4) Backline looks to be shaping pretty well with some new blood coming through. Kerevi and Naivalu seem like no-brainers.

How about we Cull Phipps for frisby. Start kerevi, cooper and get rid of cheika. There is one man to coach and that's Richard graham. How about less Waratahs in the team?

"Can we buy Genia back?" I reckon he will be signed up back at the Reds by the end of the 2017 Top 14 season. He doesn't look to me like a man who has lost his passion for the gold jersey.

I know Red Kev ..Cheika has this obsession with the groups of guys who gave him a championship in 2014 ,, I reckon he`ll go out all stops to bring that team fully together again in 2017 Douglas Horne Skelton and Beale will definatley be slotted straight back into the WALLABIES with their other TAHS teammates Kepu Foley Phipps Hooper Latu and Robertson . Look out for names like Kellaway Holloway Paddy Ryan and Dempsey getting cracks off the bench next year .

Selectors should start from scratch and on that panel there should be three independent selectors who take advice from the coaching team. The first thing they should subject to how they are playing at the time of selection is to look at 2016 year and select the best players from this years tests and then put them in their best team position. That in my opinion would be; 15 Haylet Petty 14 Folau 13 Kerevi 12 no player stands out for first round 11 Navalu 10 no player stands out 9 Genia 8 No player stands out 7No player stands out 6 no player stands out 5 Coleman 4 Arnold 3 Kepu 2 Moore 1 no player stands out From here selectors look at all other players available and everyone of the rest are starting out not as encumbent Wallabies but just as Super rugby players or even as club players.Selectors and coaches must cover all Super and premier club games

I'm with you on this one, Fionn, except you left out the bit about taking over the champion Brumbies side from Rod MacQueen & leading them to mediocrity before doing the same with the Wallabies. He turned our scrum into a world joke that we're still trying to recover from. He'll do the same to England. I see a lot of similarities in technique between Dan Cole & Bill Young, Eddie's favorite Wallaby prop.

They have the personnel in the various squads from this years tests,so next year additions only need be made if someone plays some brilliant rugby in Super season.Players who have not been available this year and could be added are Higgenbotham and Gill if for some reason he decides to return possibly the Waratahs no 8 who was injured. What Cheika needs to do is drop a couple of his pet projects like Skelton and face the fact that 9 tests have been lost this year with Foley playing in everyone of them, other people can kick as well or better than him as well.Cooper in my opinion has suffered under Cheika as well as Slipper both due to loss of confidence bought on by Cheika erratic selections others have also suffered and until Cheika gets things right will continue to happen. It took Cheika two years to work out that Coleman was our best lock either that or he is playing favourites with the like of Skelton this is just an example of.what I find frustrating about the coach/selector His other great problem is putting the best players in their rightful position eg fullback and wing and the back row.Nothing will change for Cheika or the Wallabies until these issues are addressed

So he'll make 2 tackles a game?

How bout we cull the dud Douglas instead of Simmons. He made 1 tackle and missed 2 in his whole game! HA! Another anonymous performance by a proven dud!

Lots of people seem to be forgetting TPN. He's our best scrummaging hooker by a long margin.

No, he'll fully regain fitness & confidence from his injury at RWC and you'll be insisting there's a NSW conspiracy if he's not made Wallabies captain & awarded John Eales medalist.

as much as phipps fluffed that bit of attack, it was Kepu who flicked the ball on after he knocked it on. He just had to dive on it then the ref would blow a scrum. for some reason he shovelled it on.

I've been saying this for years now but get ROD DAVIES back into the Wallaby squad. I don't care how you do it but get him back. The other thing we must start doing is pick players on form. Have trials for your club sides. Have trials for your Super Rugby sides rather than picking them from the bar of the Gentlemans Club. Finally have trials for the Wallabies. And selectors get out and look around the valleys and deserts of Australia for rare undiscovered talent.
