Tom Burgess sticks with South Sydney

By News / Wire

South Sydney have locked up bullocking prop Tom Burgess until the end of the 2019 NRL season after he signed a one-year contract extension.

Burgess insisting that despite taking a look at playing in the NFL and meeting with the New York Giants, while in London for the Four Nations, he will stay at Redfern with brothers Sam and George, at least for the time being.

His primary interest right now is bringing the 2014 NRL premiers back to relevance, after a disappointing 2016 campaign saw them miss the finals for the first time since 2011.

“It’s been a bit of an up and down year,” Burgess told News Corp Australia.

“We just couldn’t get a win in the middle part of the year. The most positive thing is at the end we got it together and started winning.

“I think we can take that through to next year.

“Mentally, we just couldn’t win. Sometimes teams just get in a rut and you get really close, a lot of games we were close but we had to believe more. We just didn’t have that last year.”

While Burgess will stay at Redfern for now he hasn’t ruled out an attempt at a move to America down the track.

“I’m interested in the game,” Burgess said.

“Definitely if something came up I would have a look at it but I don’t think it would.”

Well, Chris, that is exactly the issue for Nathan Brown. YES, he did well this year when we had all of those injuries but he wasn't even selected when all of our forwards were available. He was playing for Norths. This link below shows our Round 1 team for 2016 Please NOTE that both Tom Burges and Angus Crichton was NOT available due to injury. 10 Forwards were selected in front of him plus the 2 that were injured. That puts Brown down at 13th choice. http://afltables.com/rl/scorers/games/2016/201603060921.html

I for one am definitely excited about Souths prospects in 2017. I agree with 3 hats sentiments that we look a much more well rounded team and was so happy to hear we resigned musgrove, cook and hunt all of which I think can take their games to a really high level. As for the players we lost, I was sorry to see Carter go. I really love the way that he plays he's a complete wildcard. Only problem is, he is a complete wildcard off the field too for all the wrong reasons. Souths were his 3rd or 4th club already due to being sacked for disciplinary reasons. Didn't really have a choice but to release him. I hate to say that Brown I always thought was a second grade player doing the best that he could in first grade. Plays with plenty of heart running with gusto, but their is no quality to his work. He didn't feature much in the last games of 2016 season and Souths started knocking everyone off. Tells you something doesn't it. And Keary is a brilliant player with the ball in hand but can only play one side of the ball. His defence is absolutely ordinary. Could of been a spark off the bench for us but couldn't command that high price to be a bench impact player IMO. If Farah and Reynolds can steer the team around the park and with Inglis and Walker coming in with their X factor I think Souths attack can be massively potent this season. If our defence can match the attack then 2017 could be 22.

I have no problem losing Keary, Carter or Kirisome, but Brown I feel has Superstar potential. His loss I think will be felt

Hymel Hunt started out with his first 8 games really good, his defence for a young bloke was really strong. He didn't get too many chances to "run the ball" but when he did he was fast! He got injured in Rd 8 and missed all of that middle period. He came back in Rd 22 and he went straight back to right centre and killed it in those last 5 weeks after the Raiders game! I hope Madge changes it up a bit next season and lets the boys play. Souths have scored some fantastic trys when they do play expensive. That try against the eels. wow. I suppose Madge lost plenty of experience through injuries in 2016 especially in the forwards. It is difficult to throw the ball around when you're coming off your own line!

I only stated the facts mate, not everyone will stay at a club! They were both GREEDY. Brown is ONLY a 29 game Rookie who plays about 25 or 30 minutes a game. Is he worth more than $100k or even $150k? NO WAY! I did say that they did their best. There are many centres who play 80 minutes every week who aren't on more than $250k so why should a 30 minute Rookie? All the other players mentioned above will be far better than Keary and/or Brown IT is TRUE when Reyno was out Souths kicking game under Keary was PATHETIC! Let the Rorts pay overs for him, or big brown paper bags. What about Carter and Auva'a? Every Souths fan wanted them sacked when the true reasons were made public! We don't need Drug takers and/or alcoholic trouble makers at Souths! The same thing happened with Dylan Walker, On 3 occasions he got into trouble, on the drink but the Public or the Media didn't find out about it. I knew about it, though!

SS, If Hunt delivers for the Cook you may yet book a table for the eight. There is something special about Hymel Hunt. The senses tingle. This may be his breakout year.

WELL, here is another Souths player who has defied all of the rumours, innuendos and trash talking Journos to re-sign and remain at the Rabbitohs. So far in the papers: All of these players were reported to be unhappy at Souths and all wanted OUT? Tom Burgess, Adam Reynolds, Greg Inglis, Cody Walker, Damien Cook, Bryson Goodwin, ALL STAYED and re-signed! On opposition fans sites Jason Clark, Tigers Zane Musgrove, Dragons Hymel Hunt, Roosters Were, also reported to be unhappy at Souths and wanted out. ALL STAYED and re-signed! Brown and Keary wanted to stay but Souths didn't think that they were worth their asking price. Keary $600k, can't tackle and his kicking game is only U20's level. Souths offer was $400k Brown $250k, is a lazy trainer and his discipline has a lot to be desired. Souths offer was about $100k Both players, however, did their best! Instead, Souths kept Walker and signed future half/five-eighth Adam Doueihi, Aust Schoolboys from the Tigers. Souths kept Angus Crichton, Jack Gosiewski, Signed Tyrell Fuimaono, Eels and Brett Greinke, Broncos Re-signed future stars Cameron Murray, Toby Rudolf and Siosifa Talakai. ALL Souths Juniors Overall Souths 2017 squad will be stronger and have better depth than in 2015 and/or 2016.
