Semi Radradra to walk out on Eels and NRL after 2017 with Toulon deal

By The Roar / Editor

Parramatta star Semi Radradra will quit the NRL club at the end of the season after signing a two-year deal with French rugby union powerhouse Toulon.

The Eels have been trying to re-sign the Fijian winger but the rugby league club couldn’t match the deal offered by the Top 14 side which is worth $1 million a season, according to News Corp Australia.

Parramatta chief executive Burnie Gurr released a statement on Wednesday night, confirming Radradra was headed to France.

“As advised previously to Semi and his manager, Semi will fulfil his 2017 playing contract with the Parramatta Eels as the club will not release Semi from his 2017 obligations to our club; accordingly, the earliest Semi could commence at Toulon is early November 2017,” Gurr said.

“In early December 2016 the Parramatta Eels indicated our wish to keep Semi at our club by making a very attractive offer to Semi for the 2017 (upgrade of existing contract), 2018 and 2019 NRL seasons.

“The offer from Toulon was substantially higher than our Club’s offer.”

Radradra is due to face court on February 13 on domestic violence charges relating to an incident with his former partner.

Correct Bakkies, and this admission coming from a rl fan. What I do find ironic on caps per se ,is getting constant writings by FitzSimons in the SMH,having his usual dig at rugby league(NRL) for having a salary cap in place. His argument being, it is a restriction of trade. Yet completely ignores the fact Salary Caps are common place in pro ru clubs particularly in France ,a country Fitzy constantly sings its praises. He sees and hears what he wants to.

' In Europe there is no cap as it’s considered a restriction on the free market etc. as a result countries like France with backing by Billionaires owning clubs operate at a cap that is not sustainable. ' Yes there is a salary cap. France has a cap of €10 million clubs play 26 regular season games and plus 6 European matches so you need to have a bigger cap to employ more players. The clubs also get audited by the DNACG to make sure they live with their means and don't spend a massive proportion of their budgets on wages. Certain clubs like Montauban were relegated two divisions because they couldn't reach their financial obligations to stay in the Top 14 and were judged to not have the means to compete in Pro D2. Pro D2 have also had clubs that relegated due to this. The AP has a cap that will rise to £7 million and Wales with their regions £4.4 million and the best players are now centrally contracted by the WRU. Expect more central contracts when the debt owed on the Millennium Stadium is reduced drastically. The WRU are already paying more off what it is required on their agreement.

French clubs aren't heavy in to gym work and it's up to the player to keep in condition. Players often do their own programs off their own back. James Haskell travelled to London to do some extra work when he was playing for Stade Francais (same club as Gasnier). Gasnier played most of his games on the wing.

'Any team that will pay a winger $1 million per year, no matter how successful the team performs, is operating at an unsustainable level and is a sign of a highly inefficient player market' Toulon are self sustaining these days and one of the few clubs that post a profit every season. Rugby just values wingers at a higher rate.

You are forgetting that Rugby clubs pay wingers what they are worth. Why run upright, chase kicks on the last tackle or run from dummy half for AUD 200-250 a season when you can earn €400,000 a season in France. The top wingers like Bryan Habana earn up to €850,000 plus a season.

Nadruku joined the Raiders when Rugby was amateur then got sacked by the club for his behaviour off the field.

Who said he was useless for a start? Again another false comment. I stated he was made into a decent rl winger, a sport with which he was unfamiliar. He was a gifted athlete and ru player.Never stated he didn't have natural talent.Seriously no wonder one gets frustrated. Repeat one more time "HE WAS DEVELOPED INTO A DECENT RL WINGER."

Where the hell did I suggest that? Jacko really mate ,you love putting words into my posts. One more time ,and the last time I will spell it out. EVERY player is entitled to earn what he can ,and from whatever sport he chooses.People do it in the workplace and so should players.I have no idea who you are arguing with TBH. That being stated ,I naturally would prefer to have a player of his ability in my team or staying in the NRL. I don't like the French ru(and I am French descent) ,not because their clubs secure NRL players ,but for their past unfettered efforts against rl. Semi is going to Toulon accepted, life and the NRL goes on.

You don't know what sports I follow Jacko.Rugby league happens to be my preferred sport. As I have stated I played ru for 5 years, in fact followed the ABs because their style of open play resembled rl.. I also spent a time in Fiji,so I know rl is played there ,and that IMO is where the NRL should be sourcing players, and why Petero is involved. Show me where I'm hating this guy or anyone who has moved to another code? You don't read,I stated any player is entitled to do the best for himself.I've changed occupations, money being one of the major factors. I stated why Semi got more than a few rl fans offside. The Kangaroo jumper is an honour, he denied by a short term effort another player from accessing it. I do hate sports administrators who try to get rid of a competitor. I detest rl players who pull the code down off the field. And I have little time for people who come on rl threads because they hate rl.And they appear whenever there is a positive or negative story about the code, for an ego trip. That's my cards laid on the table. Semis individual try length of the field at ANZ ,was one of the best I have seen.Any NRL team would like a player of his ability. But he NRL has the habit of sprouting another winger, or fullback from out of the ether.

Being stood down is no admission of guilt. Most responsible codes do it, just as businesses do. Let the courts decide. Imagine the media and public having a shot at the code, playing a player who was found guilty subsequently And they decided in SKD's favour clearly.

NZ's population is close to 5 million. The climate in Australia and New Zealand is most probably the reason that the region dominates in both forms of rugby.

Hi Jacko, WC 2015 was the first full professional World Cup. I think you're referring to the 2007 WC which still had players and many coaching staff from the amateur era. The distance that NZ put between them and the other countries in WC 2015 will increase significantly at the next World Cup. The reason being is that NZ is the only developed country where Rugby is the number one sport and therefore attracts the best athletes. This is basic sociology of sport. Developed countries with the largest populations like Italy, France, Spain and Germany have dominated the modern era in Soccer. If the USA with population of 320 million focused on any sport the same way they have on American Football they would dominate it. The fact that NZ with a population of 3.5 million people dominates countries like England (50 million), France (60 million) and Australia (24 million) demonstrates the level of athlete that the sport attracts in those countries. Stay well.

So they signed a useless player and turned him into a brilliant one? Rubbish. Pro teams sign TALENT. No matter what sport. League signed him because he has a massive amount of talent. Union has signed him for exactly the same reason but surely if you claim a sport developed him then his RU history says they developed him

I havnt made any wish. Unlike you I follow both sports and dont care if an athelete plays union or league...I fully understand why someone playing for $250k a season would change to a different employer when offered $750k a season but you dont want to accept that without hating on the guy for leaving your sport. Semi is a fantastic player who makes me tune in to Parra games even tho I am not a Parra supporter and having fox sports I will also be able to watch him play for Toulon. If one of my favourite players leaves my club Im disappointed but I follow that player to his next club and get angry at those who let him get away.

Declan how can your sources re speed be correct when SBW said prior to the olympic 7s that he was the fastest he had ever been in his career. Your sources may be on the source? Perhaps Matt Rogers played in france a fair while ago ? Perhaps Gasneir was the lazy shit the reports about him say? Perhaps his attitude was bad and thats why the option of a second year was not taken up. id love to know what spewing at training has to do with anything...Maybe those spewing should stay off the Source that your sources are using Also check your stats on the last game between NZ and France. NZ win 24-19 But if you want to hand pick results to back up your arguement then Didnt france beat NZ in a semi at a WC 44-31?

Name one player who is guilty of a crime just because they have been charged? Guilt is determined at a trial is it not? Also there are MANY players with convictions who have represented Aus in League. But I suspect you know that already
