FFA reveals new competition logos

By The Roar / Editor

Hot on the heels of a new six-year broadcast deal, the FFA have announced new competition logos for three of its premier competitions, the A-League, W-League and youth league.

The TV deal, signed with long-term partner Fox Sports, was worth $346 million – or over 57 million per year and allows for one Saturday night game per round to be simulcast on free-to-air TV.

The A-League and Football has been going from strength to strength in Australia, and the new logos have been designed as a result of extensive market research to ensure the design appealed to a wider audience, trying to expand the ever growing supporter base.

FFA CEO David Gallop said the new logos would be used from the start of next season, and that they were driven to create the new look because of fan support.

“The logo design is inspired by football’s three outstanding features – atmosphere, diversity and unity,” Mr Gallop said.

“Our fans create a wonderful atmosphere, we are part of the biggest sport in the world and there’s a place for everyone to become involved.

“This is the perfect time to update our look and use the same logo across the board, especially to reinforce football’s on-going commitment to women’s football by connecting the Hyundai A-League with the Westfield W-League.”

With the new logos released on Wednesday, it also marks a first in Australian sport, with the colour changeable depending on the club. Orange, however will remain the primary colour for the A-League and Y-League, to keep it similar to the codes initial launch in 2005.

This allows the logo to blend in with each club’s colours, rather stand standing out as other codes both here in Australia and right around the world do.

Roarers, what do you think of all the new logos for Australia’s top football competitions? Let us know below in the comments?

As an Adelaide United fan. If Red bull were to take over my club, I'd have to seriously go over the details and consider whether to remain a regular at Hindmarsh. I support a club not a corporate conglomeration. Especially if they follow their MO in Europe and wipe out the clubs identity and history and deliver the Adelaide Red Bulls FC! (created 2018)

Seems there is some early speculation that Red Bull want to enter the ALeague competition by acquiring a Licence. AUFC would be the obvious choice, however, Brisbane Roar is being mentioned. Red Bull has taken Leipzig from the 5th Tier of German football to currently 2nd spot in the Bundesliga behind Bayern. If they enter the ALeague competition... it will give our competition a massive boost. Bigger boost than CFG entering with MelbCity.

South Sydney, is not 2hrs away from Moore Park. When I lived in Sydney (South) I could get to Moore Park precinct in 20 mins by car, however, parking was a nightmare. Wollongong, is definitely 2hrs away driving there.

If I were waving my magic wand I'd bring in The Gong and a South Sydney side - let them fight it out. The magic in that little scenario is Sydney viewers are more likely to watch another game each weekend, the Sydney press are more likely to write about another game, and the community reach programs will actually be in the community and not 2 hours south of Moore park.

Tassie - I did read your post and don't disagree with what your saying. But let's be clear, football is a commercial disaster in this country so anything that does not improve the commercial returns is a problem on top of an existing problem. If we put all that aside and say what do we want football to look like when we've finished for me it's something like: * HAL of 16 teams/30 rounds * p/r to HAL2 * HAL2 of 16/30 rounds also * relegation to NPL * NPL of 90+ teams by state; * promotion to HAL2 via national play off * p/r between state leagues All that looks a bit like climbing Everest to me, and the first step to Everest is building base camp which must be safe and secure, at the moment we haven't even got a base camp as it's a financial shambles so much as I sympathise with tassie we have to be blunt as a code and make some more money. Tassie v S/Sydney? No argument for me ..

Waz, and how many rusted on SFC fans do you think are in South Sydney? If it is only half of the SFC's average, then less than 8k will turn up for South Sydney Franchise and Wollongong have said, they want no part of a South Sydney franchise. Wollongong, are going to put up a stand alone bid. WSW, is a different kettle of fish, Parramatta district, is a much bigger region than South Sydney (ie the shire).

The only one I disagree with actually is unity, this is definitely not a unified code.

"then you do what will be the best for the sport & the competition; not what brings the best TV ratings" .... the tension in that statement is that Fox bankroll the competition and they do that for ratings/subscribers, their priority is different to the FFAs - if the ffa thought a team on Lord Howe Island was the way to go Fox would overrule it; while that might seem a silly statement the same also applies to NZ, Fox won't be bankrolling another team there either even if the ffa thought it was a good idea. Fox will be happy enough to have a team in Tasmania, but not before the three big cities ... and even then why wouldn't they insist on Canberra and then Perth/Adelaide expanding first?

Caltex - it might be a big part of SFCs supporter base but that's irrelevant. The same argument was used to hold wanderers back. No franchise is gifted a geographic area exclusively, besides - p/r is coming at some point which negates this as a debate. I can't see rusted-on SFC fans changing teams just because there's a new team in the south?

Nemesis - anything you can get in Tasmania you can multiply several times over in one of the three major City's, especially south sydney where they've already done their homework. You often talk in terms of business, so if fox can invest $3m in a team in Tasmania and get X return or they can invest in Sydney and get XXX return which one do you think they'll invest in? It's not even a discussion and the decision has most likely already been made - south Sydney is coming next and the only question then is, is the second one in Melbourne or Brisbane (both look unattractive to me tbh)

I like the new logo, it's contemporary, corporate, and modern, however, standing alone, it does not make a direct connection to Australian football. But, over time, I guess it will, sorta like the NIKE logo has done with sports wear.

@Waz seem way out The basic Foxtel subscription with Sport is $612 per year. So, 4,901 subscriptions generates $3m/yr. Is it reasonable to forecast a Tassie ALeague team will drive 5k new Foxtel subscriptions? I think it is very reasonable. FoxSports thinks it is very reasonable.

"How will people feel about a team in Hobart getting about 6k per game." Fantastic. I'd expect 5k per game, so 6k is extremely bullish. Small boutique stadium. The atmosphere will be better than 45k spectators spread around a 100k MCG that we see in another professional sport. "Lastly, we know ratings are the name of the game" If your sport & competition wants to be a TV show, this is true. If you want to be a legitimate competition & create the best possible footballers in Australia, then you do what will be the best for the sport & the competition; not what brings the best TV ratings

WAZ did you actually read my first post? I think I referenced geelong, Wollongong and Canberra as deserving a team so not sure why you think I am just pro Tassie? The problem with the A-league is its lack of vibrancy. Adding more Sydney teams does nothing for the comp. Same, same. New locations, new fans, different stadia, weather conditions etc adds to the appeal. We are not talking about the EPL here we are talking about a start up comp that needs to bring something different to the market in order to succeed like being the first true national football code? Sure have more Sydney teams, maybe rename the comp to the NSW NPL as there are already five teams in it already but I can tell you you won't need a crystal ball to tell you how successful that would be in the long run.

"Why can’t south Sydney feel left out and feel unrepresented ?" Really! I lived most of my life in South Sydney and it's definitely a big part of SFC supporter base (The Shire). There will be a lot of unrest and a definite split if it occurs. I can tell you that Wollongong, do not want any part of a South Sydney franchise. If you are talking about a Wollongong franchise that is different, but a South Sydney that includes Wollongong will not happen. The Illawarra folk have made that very clear on initial dissuasion boards.
