The reaction to Trevor Chappell's underarm delivery was over the top

By Graeme / Roar Rookie

It is the midst of the Chappell-Hadlee trophy and 36 years since the Greg-Trevor Chappell underarm ‘incident’.

This is an appropriate time to risk incurring the wrath of many by making the case that Greg Chappell has got more than his fair share of criticism for his decision.

There’s a bit of a mountain-from-molehill reaction to Trevor Chappell’s delivery.

Greg Chappell did what he thought he needed to do to win the game. Did it change the result of the match? Hardly. A six was needed to tie and no disrespect to Brian McKechnie, but the chances of him hitting a six on a full size MCG were rare.

There were no boundary ropes in from the fence, the bat sizes of that era were tiny and to hit a six off a low slung, skiddy bowler like T Chappell, were only marginally better than me reverse sweeping Mitch Starc for six.

Was it in the spirit of the game? Maybe not, but what exactly is the ‘spirit of the game’? Is it bowling a ball so the batsman can hit it for six, because that’s a polite thing to do? Was it against the rules or cheating? Apparently not.

A batsman can edge behind, doesn’t walk then (assuming there are no DRS reviews left) hits the next ball for two to win the game. That’s technically cheating and has changed the result of the match, but we couch it as being ‘part of the game’ and ‘accepting the umpire’s decision.’

Greg Chappell has repeated a number of times since that day that he made a decision under stress and tension that he probably wouldn’t have made it again in another similar scenario. I’m not suggesting it was right, just that it has been made to look like murder was committed when it was actually closer to grievous bodily harm.

Whether legal or not that underarm bowl orchestrated by Greg Chappel against the KIWIs,was the worst bad sport act I have ever seen, and will never forget, and I cant work out how anyone could defend the Chappels for that act. What kind of individuals are we breeding to say that even if you snick a bowl and know it, that you should not walk ,It seems that what was once called THE Gentleman"s Game has now become a game of Cheats ,Loudmouths,(Wade ) Spitters (Smith). Is this what modern fans go for? Sava

I was still playing rugby at the time of the Carozza incident, there was general dismay from NZ rugby players over that incident. It was filthy and wrong. Umaga never indulged in dirty play, it was an unfortunate accident. No doubt the 3 AB players were careless, but it wasn't dirty. Pinetree was no angel, but always claimed he was only trying to clear Catchpole from the ruck. They had been team mates and Pinetree always regretted his actions. Chappell was to the fore of both incidents, his failure to walk for the Sneddon catch after Sneddon signalled he had caught it cleanly, and the underarm were decisions he made within the laws of Cricket. We can always find the negatives, but two magnificent sporting countries can go at it and (hopefully) share a beer and a laugh afterwards. Unfortunately one thing never mentioned is Bruce Edgar's magnificent century is forgotten in the controversy.

I'd have to agree. I was ten years old at the time watching the game with my family. That Chappell not out when caught by Snedden is still the worst umpiring decision I have seen then and in the 36 years since. The under arm was just the icing on the cake. I've hated Australian cricket since, and am always heartened when they lose, no matter to who. Here is the whole sorry incident: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6agc6mYEkE

PM Muldoon, desperately trying to gain revenge after being condemned for his despicable facilitation of the '81 Springbok tour of NZ. A single unsportsmanlike action isn't even on the same planet in terms of immortality.

.......big in stature does not mean they are impervious to small mans syndrome, on the contrary it is exactly this sort of alfa bloke, you know, the once were warriors type, who are the most insecure and this why they gravitate to combat sports like ra ra.

.......yeah I recall the Kiwis stacking the defence for 85% of the gold medal Olympic Hockey game v us decades back now. They managed a score early in the piece much to their surprise as ours. They then proceeded to play defence for the remainder of the game. it worked.

Haddin also his gloves in front of the stumps in that incident, so both the square leg and third umpires were either asleep at the wheel or didn't know the rule.

Not to mention the reaction to the Stuart Broad non walking incident when 2 or 3 Australian batsmen did the same thing over the previous few years after being caught in the slips.

I love It.I love bringing it up with Kiwis as you will get a bite everytime.I will usually end up agreeing it was a dog act but then say look at the scoreboard chumps. It's good hearted banter most people really don't take it that seriously. If a basketball game has 2 seconds left and the team with the throw in needs a 3 pointer to win the opposition is going to double triple team the best 3 point shooters and forget lining up in a normal defence. In AFL if a team needs the a goal to win with less than a minute the opposition will abandon its usual structure and put the whole team in defence. The people that made the rules without thinking anyone would ever bowl an underarm delivery to win a game because its not polite are the ones in the wrong. I mean com'on we have all played sports and have known players do things like Chappel did from C grade to under 10's I reckon everyone here would have encountered it at some point in their sporting lives. For the rule makers to think it wouldn't happen at international level because its a gentleman game is absurd. It was an obvious flaw in the rules and if chapell hadn't done it someone else would have sooner or later.

At the time I thought the underam ball was pretty low but now, reading th comments, i am thinking why not? It was within the rules. Maybe it is all the drugs in sports and other egregious cheating and manipulating of the rules thats gone on in recent years. However I do seem to be in the minority.

Agree 100% Paul. I'm more or less just arguing for the sake of it now, but does the same law re the umpires apply in cricket? I mean you don't have to appeal for a penalty in rugby (although some 9s don't seem to realise)

The umpire didn't no-ball Chappell's delivery therefore he has broken no laws Can't have it both ways... That's just me being semantic though, I have no wish to look as though I agree with gurudoright whose comparison of McCaw to underarm makes no sense whatsoever

There never used to be a law against bat size till some clever dick walked out with a bat wider than the wicket.

you're forgetting one thing The referee is the sole arbiter of time and law in rugby. If McCaw believed himself to be onside and no one stopped him, then is he not onside? And has therefore broken no laws?
