The case to keep Arsene Wenger

By The Doc / Roar Guru

After two consecutive losses in the league and a dismal away result to Bayern, all the media pundits and supporters have the knives out baying for Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger’s blood.

Yes it’s that time of the year again – Wenger bashing season.

It is a time when supporters and media commentators alike ask for Wenger to call time on his Arsenal managerial career. Meanwhile, the rest of us hope that the Arsenal board and owner will heed the advice of the histrionic masses and force Wenger to leave.

When you look over the records of all managers, Wenger’s is excellent. Over a 20-year period he has won three EPL titles and six FA cups. It was interesting to note he has never won a English league cup.

His team have qualified for the UCL group phase for 20 consecutive seasons with their best result being a runners up place in 2006. He has run a fiscal operation that has always kept the club in a strong financial position.

There are then the intangibles that statistics cannot measure. He oversaw a period during the construction of the Emirates Stadium and kept the team competitive despite being crippled by losing his best his players to opposing clubs.

Unlike Chelsea or Man City he has not had the luxury of having a wealthy single owner who has unlimited funds to spend in the transfer window. He has had to recruit judiciously and has always placed an emphasis on developing young players.

Detractors will claim that his domestic and European records no longer meet expectations but the Premier League is a very competitive league where there can be six teams often vying for the title.

Three of those (Chelsea, City and United) have either wealthy billionaire owners or sufficient funds to afford anyone on the transfer market.

Europe is equally competitive and has essentially been dominated by three clubs (Real, Barcelona and Bayern) for over a decade now and this monopoly shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

Arsenal have had a knack of frequently running into Bayern or Barcelona in the knockout stages which certainly hasn’t helped.

Unfortunately they have faltered when running into lesser opponents (Monaco as an example). He has also been accused of being slow to repair problems areas in his squad (mainly in the defence) but he has gone a long way to rectifying that by buying Shkodran Mustafi, Mohamed Elneny, Granit Xhaka and Petr Cech over the last two seasons.

Unfortunately, injuries have hurt him this season. The loss of Santi Cazorla has been a bigger blow than envisaged, Aaron Ramsay has been hurt for much of the season, Jack Wilkshire is on loan and Eleny was away in Africa during January.

These partly explain the failure to maintain momentum this season.

If he was to go, who would replace him? There are lots of great managers out there but improving and at the least replicating the success of Wenger is not an easy task.

The turbulent post Ferguson transition at Manchester United serves as a great example of the difficulty in maintaining success during the changeover from coaching legend to a new manager.

Arsenal fans should be careful what they wish for. It is easy to sack a manager but much harder to create sustained success that meets supporter expectations. And trust me, I know – I’m a Spurs supporter.

Thanks Lloyd. Agreed- the owners are unlikely to sack someone who generates so much revenue on the transfer market

Well written Doc. Any top side would rip your arm off for 2 decades of guaranteed champions league football. I predict a sharp and long decline once Wenger departs. The owners are not going to change the transfer policy, and as far as buying and grooming youngsters goes, there is no one better than AW.

While his record of qualifying for the CL year on year is astounding, Arsenal have never really had a genuine chance of winning the CL. The invariably fall around the quarter final stage. While his 3 league titles are a great legacy, the truth his he hasn't won one for about 14 years now, his last in the 03 /04 season. I really think its time that Arsenal make the change, thank him for his years of service and move forward into a new era under someone else.

Hi Doc, Cant argue your point, I agree with it. Arsenal are really in a tough position and a unique one. Kroenke and the board have to decide on Wenger, Ozil and Sanchez, some seriously big decisions. That is assuming Sanchez and Ozil want to stay of course.

Thanks for your comment MoriartyExp. You make all good points. It is that really difficult decision- Making a managerial change in order to give yourself a chance at the title vs the coach with the runs on the board who is at the least guaranteed to qualify to the UCL. My view is the latter (and perhaps increase spending) rather than take a punt into the relative unknown. Once you fail to qualify for UCL it can be a slippery slope as great players no longer sign up and you then bank on the pulling power of the club and coach (which is what Man U have been able to do to). I'm not sure time has moved on for him just yet

Agreed. Just look at Man U since Fergie. 4 managers, millions spent and yet to revisit the Champions League. There's a tier of spending in the EPL that only Man U, Man C and Chelsea have. Arsenal are in second tier with Spurs & Liverpool. All the complaining Arsenal fans should ask themselves when was the last time Spurs or Liverpool won the title? Having said all that 1-1 away to Bayern at half time, for goodness sake park the bus and give yourself a chance at the Emirates instead of just getting smashed again Aaaarggh.

What Wenger has archived over the last 20 years no Arsenal fan is disputing, he is a club legend, he will have a part of the stadium named after him and a statue out the front. It's what he can't archive now that us (arsenal fans) are wanting, Premier League title, semi final/finals in champions league etc. Our current squad seems to be divided as the fans with should Arsene stay or go. I don't agree with the Ramsey, Cazorla, Eleny & Wilshere missing has been a bigger blow to us as Ozil, Coquelin, Xhaka etc not stepping up and filling in midfield rolls, this is proven with Ox stepping up and being our best player for the last 3 weeks in the centre of the park. I do agree though, be careful what you wish for, but United had the same issue, Ferguson was there for 27 years but time moves forward and so does football and football clubs. Arsenal is owned by a billionaire, Kroenke just doesn't the same interest level in Arsenal as City, Chelsea etc owners do.
