Inglis out for six months of NRL

By News / Wire

South Sydney captain Greg Inglis is expected to miss up to six months of rugby league after injuring his knee in the Rabbitohs’ NRL season opener on Friday.

Inglis suffered the injury in the opening minutes of the 34-18 loss against Wests Tigers, and scans on Saturday have revealed the fullback has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Despite the early incident, Inglis remained on the field at ANZ Stadium on Friday, receiving regular attention from trainers.

But he struggled for any fluidity with his movement and shifted over to play on the wing.

The Rabbitohs on Friday defended the decision to allow the Australian and Queensland star to continue playing, and said on Saturday that the injury didn’t occur as a result of Inglis persisting.

“The injury occurred in the first instance in the match, not as a consequence of Greg playing on further,” said Rabbitohs general manager of football, Shane Richardson.

“Our medical staff further examined the injury at the half time break and they felt the knee was stable, and they along with the Head Coach and Greg himself agreed that he would go on and play in the second half.

“I, along with the rest of our Club, have the greatest of confidence in our medical and coaching staff to make the best possible decisions about our players’ wellbeing.

“We have the quality of squad to continue our quest throughout the season and Greg, as our captain and senior leader, will continue to play a significant role throughout the year.”

Some really good points Ginger Meggs. You are spot on and have a keen eye. Madge got the team wrong. The wrong twin got dropped for a start and Tyrrell and Clark are only going to get worse from this point on. Souths needs a transfusion of young blood starting with Angus Crichton, Braidon Burns and Robert Jennings. AJ has lost his spark and needs to find it if he wants to make an impression at FB (I agree though, I don't think he is the man to wear the number 1 long term in Inglis' absence). Cody Walker is a MUST at 5/8 for Souths but will probably be the one moved to cover the FB role if AJ fails. I think Braidon Burns would make a gun FB in time but first he should be eased into the team on the wing. After his game against the Dragons he should have been in the team against the Tigers instead of Goodwin. Great game by Goodwin but he is way passed it IMO. Burns would have caught Moses! Also, it's good to see someone else on the same page about Cody Walker. He is a gun! Or will he think outside the square for once Like dropping Goodwin (even after a 3 try haul) and Talakai (even after a descent effort) and promoting Braidon Burns and Robert Jennings in their place... THAT outside the square? I would also like to Anthony Cherrington get a run. I liked what he showed (for his brief appearance) in the Charity Shield. Finally drop Luke Kelly and let Damien Cook take his place at HB and finally play for 80 mins! Sutton can play 5/8 if Walker must be moved to FB. Oh the pain!

Na Inglis is very good, but he doesnt usually play to his skill level, thats the criticism. Even when he plays lacklustre, hes still decent enough player.

"perhaps we just went off after Inglis got injured" I will give the Tigers their due. Although there is no mistaking the Rabbitohs collective heads went down following the injury to Inglis the Tigers perfectly executed a clear strategy that caught the Bunnies with their pants down. The Tigers were focused on building their attack off the back of second phase play (offloads) at periods of the game when they intentionally lifted their intensity. They had players trailing the ball carrier who would drive the ball forward and turn to offload on impact. It looked practised and prepared and caught Souths napping. Souths were slow to react and as they brought more players in to effect the tackle and wrap up the ball the offload to a player trailing the ball carrier was then sent wide where Souths were short. More often than not the Tigers deliberately focused their attack down Souths right defensive edge towards Inglis who was stranded on the wing. Inglis and his isolated inside defender were targeted and this defensive deficiency was exploited. Full credit to the Tigers. Badly done by Souths (and Madge in particular!)

Maguire didn't really give Souths much of a chance in the opening round. Firstly he picks a forward pack based on priority to the ageing loyal servants of the club, or those lads who got through their push-ups the fastest in the gym. Then he opts for Luke Kelly as half, and leaves the most impressive player in the trials, Damien Cook, on the sidelines for half of the game. Then he willed Greg Inglis' knee to recover and left him on the field for 58 minutes in a crippled state until Wests noticed that he had to hobble for 20 yards to score a try and started aiming their attack straight at him, resulting a couple of tries. Did any other person watching the game have any idea what was the point of it? This decision was as wacko as ignoring Cody Walker's brilliant five-eight play for North Sydney for the 2015 season while Souths scratched around and around for a stand-off due to their injury list. Now he is faced with replacing Inglis. Will he persevere with Alex Johnson, who is a fine winger, but who, despite his success as a fullback throughout his outstanding junior representative career, has shown no indication that he has the capability of being a genuine NRL full-back? Will he move Cody Walker to the back and throttle Souths backline? Or will he think outside the square for once. If he gets it wrong Souths season will most probably be a fizzer.

Yep agree with you he did look good in the shield but as you said tom and George need to lift. They are good at running straight but need mobile back rowers who can cover them laterally. They cannot afford tyrell and Clarke anymore- to small and slow. We need Chrighton, cherrington along with rochow and Musgrave to be there to give us the grunt to give the young backs the room to shine. After seeing what the Dragons did to the panthers today's perhaps we just went off after Inglis got injured- I hope so anyway or it could be a long season!

Trust me Braiden Burns is the next young player everyone will be talking about once he gets the chance. He looked great against the Dragons in the Charity Shield and I thought he would be a walk in for the game against the Tigers over Goodwin. The 3 tries Goodwin scored Burns (and most other wingers) would have scored as well. Tom and George both have to turn their games around fast. The Bunnies need size up front and losing both would be too costly to the teams go forward.

EJ, funny thing is over the last few years we've had numerous comments here along the lines of: GI's a crock Only plays well in Tests and SOO Doesn't put in for Souths Disinterested A liability Waste of money Now he's injured it's : Souths are in big trouble now Can almost put a line through them for the semi finals There goes the season! ... absolutely no hope without him Even without 3 Hats, there's plenty to laugh about ?

Got to agree. GI is as dodgy as Peter Foster. Up to his eyeballs in the Melbourne salary cap scandal (this is why he, Smith, Slater or Cronk should never be considered for immortal status), Bowraville boy who was playing for Hunter Sports High (on scholarship) after the age of 16 (i.e. NSW player!) but was allowed to play for QLD because they were down on troops at the time despite never living in QLD (he lived in Melbourne from age 17, flying up to play for Norths Brisbane) he can't stand QLDers, finds them all rednecks which is why he turned his back on the Bronco's even after signing a contract with them post his involvement in the Storm salary cap drama, and went to the Bunnies, a better cultural fit. Then the issues with his family(s), that I won't mention here. Personally, if this empty ethical shell of of a human being never plays rugby league again and is quickly forgotten, the better off we'll all be.

Correct. They may have been a minor chance if the whole team remained fully fit for the whole season, but no Reynolds (injury prone), no Inglis (injury prone), no Keary (gone), the three Burgious (Crowes bum-boys dropping the ball more often than not), a lazy local in Sutton, a piss poor backline (Hunt and Goodwin are NSWCup, QCup, ESL standard at best), bottom 4, maybe 12th. Best spine now is Johnston, Walker, Farah, Cook, joke!.

Very sad to read this news. I don't know if it would have made a difference to the injury but he should have been taken off the game last night. Hope this isn't the beginning of the end of his career with his knee injuries.

they say minimum of 6 month but he may have the lars surgery - the Swans player(Nick Malceski) had this surgery in 2010 and was back playing in 15 weeks instead of being out for 12 months - a good article about Lars below http://www.drpeterlarkins.com/2012/03/lars-ligament-surgery-why-all-the-fuss/
