Roar beat Jets to stay fourth in A-League

By News / Wire

Brisbane retained fourth place on the A-League ladder after winning 3-1 against a Newcastle side, down a player and their coach for 59 minutes, in a drama-packed Sunday night at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Jamie Maclaren scored from the spot in the 62nd minute and off a rebound in the 74th, before substitute Nicholas D’Agostino buried his chance from a blocked shot in the 90th.

The round-22 win takes the Roar to 33 points, behind Melbourne City on goal difference and one point clear of Perth.

The spotlight, though, was squarely on referee Jarred Gillett and the Jets’ woes.

Newcastle were up 1-0 in the 31st minute when Jets defender Jason Hoffman, filling as skipper with Nigel Boogaard on the bench, received two yellow cards inside a minute.

After a card for dissent following a free kick against him, Hoffman was given a second by Gillett for apparently fouling Manuel Arana on the edge of the penalty area.

Arana appeared to run into Hoffman as he tried to go around him and the Jets’ bench reacted angrily to the send-off. Gillett then consulted his linesman and fourth official before sending Newcastle coach Mark Jones from the sidelines.

Gillett awarded Brisbane a penalty after Andrew Hoole had pulled on the shirt of Thomas Broich at a corner. Maclaren converted the chance in the 62nd minute for 1-1.

Maclaren was then on the spot to bury the go-ahead goal after a long-range strike from Arana was blocked by Jets goalkeeper Tomislav Arcaba into his path.

Newcastle had led in the 10th minute with an Andrew Nabbout penalty after Corey Brown fouled Aleksandr Kokko with a lunge from behind.

The loss drops Newcastle to eighth on the ladder on 22 points, three outside the top six.

Kevin Muscat can say or do anything towards a 4 th official . He's untouchable . He's at a big club however mark jones isn't .

What I did found interesting yesterday was that the fourth official suddenly finds a backbone when a coach complains about a ref's decision (Jones didn't seem to react that badly)). When you look at the clubs who have had coaches sent to the stands this season, Adelaide, Perth and Newcastle, none of these coaches are overly volatile, Lowe just seems overactive . If Jones' reaction is the benchmark for being sent to the stands, Arnold and Muscat should just start the game in the stands to save time. Jones seemed restrained compared to others who haven't ended up in the stands.

Kallfhalla was in his own half with the Roar defence between him and the goal. Arana was in the attacking half and heading in to the penalty area but somehow that's a soft one lol

Soft shirt tug Waz!? If I remember correctly the player was away and McKay pulled him back. Definite yellow

Arana is a "second salary tier" player so even though he's a visa player he's on the books because he's cheap and fits the cap. A bit like Pepper.

Chops - I'm going to disagree with you on Oar, he's taken his time but he is living up to expectations now. Holman, no. And the kids, should have been played earlier I agree.

The Jets were not robbed - they were gifted a penalty. The actions of Hoffman was the problem. Already on a yellow, any player needs to be careful.

'Brisbane penalty not deserved......Jets penalty deserved........both yellows on Hoffman a stitch up because the other club is 'bigger'.......forget about previous Brisbane Newcastle games this year.....Jets were 100% in control of every aspect of the match until the send off....' The Pacific Ocean near Newcastle today is now completely devoid of salt.

Fadida -The lad Grant is probably, and potentially the best right-back in the country at the moment but apparent to any football man is that he has to learn to curb his enthusiasm, and change it into controlled action. He could never be risked at this point in time for if, he were playing in a Socceroo team, AP would be sweating blood every time the ball went near the lad. Let him cure that problem and the sky is the limit for him. Cheers jb.

Griffo - the only way to stop it is for the referee to give fair warnings to players before a game that he is going to award a penalty for any penalty box indiscretions. It wouldn't matter if he had to award 10 penalties in the game, the coaches would soon put a stop to it. Not difficult when you think about it. Cheers jb.

The ball passed at the back of him last time he was picked as a socceroo. His timing was not good. He cannot do good headers too. I doubt any A-league number 9 is up to the standard currently except the evergreen Cahill.

Stu I am on the same wavelength as you 1. Arana should not be displacing an Aussie kid as we have youth team players that could provide as much if not more to the team. 2. Maclaren will be gone at the end of the season and we should look to Eastern Europe, Ireland or South America to replace him. 3. The squad has been poorly managed because players like Cristani, Caletti, Brady, Katebian, O'Toole, Rowle and D'Agostino should have been eased into the team through out the season. Add them to the "regular16" squad members and that is how you create the backup for a team. Instead JA waited till he had to play them and threw them in the deep end. Now the salient point, Tommy Oar and Brett Holman next years Marquees? Both players have not lived up to their reputations in my opinion. Tommy has the ability but at times not the street smarts and he fades in and out of games. He has been at the club twelve months now so we should see some consistency from his performances. Holman lacks the finesse and touch one would expect from a marquee but has an infectious never say die attitude when on the field. the problem is he has only played a full ninety minute twice as he runs out of gas. In fact both future marquees would have spent less time on the pitch than the "old ones" they are supposed to be replacing.

To me, with Hoffman wearing the armband, I wondered why he needed to give a verbal spray? He at least had a licence to ask the ref what he was pulled up for in more civilised manner while flashing his armband. Perhaps more why he got the yellow considering how many players constantly give a mouthful.

Agree with both of you. A number of years ago it was suppose to be stamped out in one tournament or another. Probably the only way to stop it is with touch-sensitive fabric tech that highlights the infringing player in the box... ...then you'd need the video ref to sort out who was first  O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree...

I'm not sure Roar are a big club but we got Matty Mackie sent off for a rather soft shirt tug in R1 so it does happen. I just think players need to be smarter than they are - Hoffman shouldn't have used dissent on the first foul and in the second one he should have just let Arana go past knowing he'd just been booked

The game changed due to appalling decision making by the Jets player. Don't act like a petulant child and get booked for dissent and don't commit a deliberate foul a minute later. That's not the refs fault, that's poor decision making by Hoffman lol

Arana hasn't played enough. Visa players should be a first pick every week

I would select Jamie Maclaren first because he has already experienced the squad and there needs to be some continuity but Adam Taggart is close second now
