Rebels vs Chiefs highlights: Super Rugby live scores, blog

The Rebels‘ difficult start to 2017 gets even tougher with the visit to AAMI Park tonight of the unbeaten, high-flying Chiefs. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:45pm AEDT.

The Chiefs, a side who many pundits expect to go all the way in this year’s competition, are indeed a formidable test for a home side bound to be low on confidence and still missing a number of their best players through injury.

The Rebels have already leaked 18 tries in two matches against the Blues and Hurricanes, and with home fans gravely concerned about the disparity between New Zealand and Australian teams, there will be collective breaths held that the tries conceded tally isn’t substantially increased.

Despite their travails however, the Rebels are a proud outfit that are well coached, so, despite the stern opposition, fans should expect an improved showing from them.

There are four changes from the Hurricanes match – two in the front row, where Laurie Weeks returns and local player Fereti Sa’aga makes his debut at prop.

With Lopeti Timani missing due to a leg injury, Culum Retallick returns at lock to mark his brother Brodie.

Harlequins lock Murray Douglas has been elevated from club rugby to take a spot on the bench; a massive step up in class but a wonderful opportunity for him.

The news in the backline is brighter with long time Fijian friends Sefanaia Naivalu and Marika Koroibete lining up together for the first time on the wings.

There are changes for the Chiefs too; Sabastian Siataga earning a start at hooker and, with James Lowe out this week, a debut for winger Solomon Alaimalo.

Damien McKenzie shifts to 10, perhaps an indicator that the All Blacks selectors have put in a word, with an eye to Aaron Cruden’s impending shift to France.

This frees up an opportunity for the talented Shaun Stevenson to get a start at fullback, with Cruden taking a spot on the bench.

It is hard to envisage anything other than a comfortable Chiefs victory; more than that if they are allowed to get their high paced ensemble game functioning.

For their part the Rebels will know the importance of making their first up tackles and competing hard at the breakdown.

If the Rebels are passive and allow the Chiefs to come at them, they will be swamped, so they have no option but to be assertive and try to disrupt the Chiefs from playing on their terms, and – if that wasn’t hard enough – try to stay in the fight for all 80 minutes.

It is hard to know what impact this week’s uncertainty and speculation about the future of the franchise will have had on the mindset of the Rebels players; although it is fair to suggest that any negative impact can only be on them and not on the Chiefs.

Prediction
All signs point to an entertaining match and a comprehensive win for the classy visitors.

Chiefs by 36.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he's a great finisher and can accelerate from a few metres out. I really noticed his lack of speed in defence - there were several long range tries by the Chiefs when Marika was chasing back and then just gave up. It was hard to tell if he didn't have the gas, is struggling to get back to full fitness or is carrying an injury.

Not sure about either, but Marika wasn't the fastest at the Storm either. Vanivalu, Cronk & Chambers were faster. I have seen in caught from broken play a few times at the Storm as well. Maybe, it's having less room in union making him look slow?!

Yep faith but when you consider that they had too men binned so for 20 mins were down to 14 and had two tries disallowed (correctly but in a game of inches could have been awarded), the scoreboard might have flattered the Rebels a little.

Now from the Chiefs presser… coach Dave Rennie and captain Sam Cane What are the positives from tonight? Cane… happy with the points, happy with the final 5 minutes, one of those games that they “won ugly”, which is what can happen during a season. Cane insists they didn’t take the Rebels lightly, they know the Rebels are proud and they turned up as expected. Rennie adds that there was no lack of respect for the Rebels, but a lack of respect for possession. And discipline was lacking. We brought the referee into the game, we need to do better. Rennie is sad to see Kerr-Barlow leaving, he’s been great this year, getting more game time with Weber injured. McKenzie at 10 was more about giving Stephenson an opportunity at 15. They’d like to do more of that, but there’s no doubt that Cruden is the kingpin at 10 and he’ll be there for all the big games.

Chiefs have this kind of weird poor performance in their DNA especially against Aussie competition. Last season they were belted by the Tahs after some seriously good games in NZ that posted them as faves. This season at least they seem to have a serious defence. Clearly with one eye on the bye they prolly thought this was in the bag. Kudos to the Rebel army for taking it to them.

Press conference Firstly from the Rebels, Tony McGahan and captain Nick Stirzaker. Asked if the overriding emotion is being more upset with the loss or happy with being much more competitive tonight McGahan says that they recognize it’s about the result and a loss is a loss, but he’s very happy with the improved performance. Stirzaker says they’ve worked very hard and now have something to build on. Very proud of the effort of his team. McGahan won’t rest with this though, they need to be better than they were tonight. Really liked the spirit and the competitiveness. Two tries in the last 6 minutes hurts but we’ll take the positives from staying in the game at 14-14 with a good side. The back three? First time those guys have played together, there’s good potential to improve those combinations further. If you could see how far Koroibete has come from where he was two weeks ago, it’s quite amazing. Was the build-up for the game impacted at all by all of the press talk this week? McGahan says no, not at all, the team didn’t meet or discuss it. Obviously there’s all sorts of talk out there but that’s nothing we have any control over. Silence is deafening, but he’ll leave all that off-field stuff up to Andrew Cox and his team. In summary, there’s a lot of good to go forward with, they’ve drawn a line under the first two games and now they’re really looking forward to the Waratahs next week.

I thought he did well! Some might complain but on balance a good game from him. And it's still early for him.

It's tough trying to ride 2 sides to a win on the same night.....the ticker does have a tendency, to get over-worked.
