Brumbies hand Super beating to Queensland

By News / Wire

The Brumbies have extended their unprecedented winning streak against Australian Super Rugby opposition to 10, with a 43-10 thrashing of the Queensland Reds.

The six-tries-to-one drubbing gave the Canberra-based franchise a bonus point to increase their lead at the top of the Australian conference.

After a sixth-straight defeat, the Reds’ season hangs in the balance as their shocking away record continues to hurt them.

A second-half blitz from the Brumbies set up the victory with two converted tries in the first five minutes after the break setting the tone as they went on to pile on 33 unanswered points.

Hooker Robbie Abel scored a try immediately after half-time before a lucky bounce helped fullback Aidan Toua to run more than half the field to score under the posts.

Tries from Jarrad Butler, James Dargaville and Chris Alcock completed the rout against a hapless Reds defence.

The match was in the balance at half-time with a James Tuttle penalty goal levelling the scores at 10-all after the siren.

But the 20-year-old halfback, who was promoted to the Reds’ starting line-up after coach Nick Stiles dropped Nick Frisby, had earlier cost his side with two missed shots on goal.

The Brumbies victory came at a price with centre Kyle Godwin (broken hand) and back-rower Jordan Smiler (hamstring) suffering match-ending injuries.

They will get the chance to win another derby next week when they face the struggling Rebels in Melbourne, while the Reds host the Kings in Brisbane.

Club rugby, U20's - grass roots is solid in Queensland Just not as solid as it used to be and the way the game is going under SANZAR, The ARU and QRU's leadership - they may have a few years of this at best

Gill and McMahon are the only 2 of those who are proven top class, neither has signed to come back and both would be hotly sought by all franchises and plenty of O/S clubs. The others MIGHT be as good as the 7 you suggest the Reds ditch, and all could easily be worse. And they will need understudies - where are they coming from?

In attack, yes. And I thought he would shine even better running directly off the 10 and drawing in defenders. His defensive positioning will also be less likely to be exposed. He's an awesome 13, but I think he'd be even better at 12.

agree with everything you say hello.. nice and rational.. one thing though graham won't be feeling better because of the situation.. he is not that sort of bloke at all.. quality guy and before he busted his leg he was playing better than burke.. always are what ifs and maybes but the guy was amazing at 15.. he maybe isn't cut-out for being head coach material at the moment, or ever, but i do hope he comes back in some form after a few years away.. the team played badly under him, yes, they had some terrible luck with injuries and egos etc.. but some of the abuse he copped was well ott.. on a side note i have feeling that is there something wrong with how we are developing coaches in oz.. we should be churning them out like the kiwis but we aren't even getting 10% of what they achieve..

The replacements will come with pain but the bottom line is this club needs to look forward to move forward. There is Rodda, Tui, Gunn (Gill in 2019), we shouldn't have let go of Browning nor Mason and the two halves look to be far superior to The tripe Frisby has been dishing up. If he hasn't already been signed yet they should bring McMahon back from Melbourne. No more overseas imports or interstate players from now on

Cooper's return clearly improved the Reds.

Yeah but who are the available replacements for Simmons, Douglas, Smith, Houston, Frisby, McIntyre and Cooper? Especially in the halves there is a big black hole of talent. Phipps and Foley are the incumbent WBs, FFS :(

Completely agree :). Unfortunately, Cheika really doesn't seem to be a fan though.

Tardy is too slow and not strong enough in contact. Simple

Fardy is better than hanigan, timani and higginbotham, its only the coach keeping him out.

Hardened supporters of Cooper will defend him as if he does no wrong. Thats nonsense. He has had a mixed career and he has many flaws in his game at the top level. He has been dropped for valid reasons before and those that claim bias against him when Foley is picked as a starter are just being unreasonable. However he does make a positive impact on the Reds generally. How much theyve missed him is hard to say. All I can say is that RG must feel a lot better about himself. Now theyll blame Stiles.

I dont think you know who is a good coach and who isnt tbh. You name a "good coach" and I will name a team they "failed" with.

Literally? So no player in the Reds had played rugby before?

It was at least 15 metres as it was in between the 10 metre line and the 22.

Riddler I am talking about Sydney GPS is the problem they haven't moved with the times. What is the point of having a hyperbaric chamber for 8 competitive games of Rugby a year. This is a comp that has gone from 8 competing teams to at least 5. Joeys don't seem to be winning titles and producing players. That's the Aussie Rugby version of Grey College and Blackrock College right there. If Joeys aren't producing players these days and a winning mentality Aus Rugby has to go elsewhere. I remember watching Schoolboy league on Channel 9 over a decade ago other Rugby countries that are the ARU's main competitors in underage and international competitions have joined that boat yet the GPS heads prefer being stuck in the 80s. Australian underage Rugby can't progress until they can get out of that mindset. Having been involved in underage coaching and having spoken to those who have spent several unpaid hours outside of their own jobs they are banging their heads against the walls against dinosaurs and people stuck in the 80s. The club goes in to the schools to try and encourage players to play Rugby but the dinosaurs are more interested in their own backyard (likely to be GAA bootlickers) or that is not their business to get people in to sporting clubs (looking after their own schools teams).

So maybe other props with inferior Super Rugby performances might magically be better test players?

Agree with all your thoughts. Although the intercept was obviously risky. Felt they copped it rough in the first half (being penalized after winning a dominant scrum!) Although Brumbies were the better team. Unfortunately the reds went home at half time.

Yeah, the key point is "good coaches". Blackadder isn't one and wouldn't have done better.
