Match preview:

The Canberra Raiders have underperformed all season and need to beat the North Queensland Cowboys tonight to kickstart a premiership assault that has so far fired blanks. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm AEST.

It has a been a painfully underwhelming season so far for Raiders fans, with their team losing six matches already this season by six points or less.

The Raiders still have a positive points differential but the Green Machine still isn’t firing when it counts to secure competition points.

As it stands, the Raiders, a premiership fancy at the start of the season, now need to replicate their awesome winning run last year to give themselves a hope of securing a top eight birth.

Indeed a top four birth appears unlikely, given that teams in the top four last season only ended up losing eight matches overall.

The Raiders have already lost nine games so far and still face difficult assignments against premiership contenders, such as the Melbourne Storm, later in the year.

Tonight, the Raiders simply must get back into the winner’s circle against a Cowboys side minus the great Johnathon Thurston.

With that said, the Cowboys are punching above their weight this season, defeating a full strength Panthers side last week up in Townsville.

Despite the absence of Thurston and Matt Scott, the Cowboys under Paul Green possess a winning mentality forged after securing victory in the epic 2015 Grand Final against the Brisbane Broncos.

With or without Thurston, the Cowboys remain a dangerous team and will punish the Raiders if the home side once again start off in lacklustre fashion.

Prediction
Its do or die for Canberra tonight. The Raiders on their day remain one of the most entertaining and skilful teams in the competition, but a lack of composure has cost them dearly this season.

The Cowboys won’t roll over easily but the Raiders close to their best should get the job done at home.

Jonno I know that they have re-signed Wighton, but if he was playing for the Mounties he might want to move to the English Premier League, I know no other NRL team would have him on the money Canberra are paying him

They're not going to release Wighton. He just signed a new contract either last month or in May until 2020.

Trent Hodkinson, not Josh. I was too angry last night & got his name wrong. On another angle, why not put Josh Hodgson at 7, release Wighton, Siezer & Bateman & use Baptise & Sorenson as number 9's. Moving Cotrick to Fullback is a no brainer, while your at it give him a 12 year contract. He is a local & would stay regardless. Otto has re-signed so he could fill on the wing for Cotrick. I feel so sorry for Papaulli, good luck signing him on another contact the way the place is going. Ricky you have got to understand that as a fan, that's all I am, but as the Coach you have to be that & make the hard decisions.

Clearly Ricky does nothing to raise the IQ of the team overall. He is just another factor contributing to their stupidity.

Has to be some serious question marks over Stuart's ability to coach after that performance. How can essentially the same team that finished second in 2016 perform so poorly 12 months later? If anything they are stronger on paper with Cotric replacing Edrick Lee. Just about every player has gone backwards apart from Rapana and Papalii. Wighton has to be the worst full back in the league. Everybody can see it apart from Ricky. Cotric has to be moved there ASAP. BJ continues to make dumb mistakes and give away dumb penalties. The team has a collective IQ of last night's minimum temperature - minus 8.7 Not sure what else they can do as there is very little in the way of depth. Its going to be hard to watch this collective rabble for the rest of the season.

Certainly seen penalty decisions changed in the past. It was a tuff penalty for a start when Leilau is standing and fitting in the tackle. That's pretty much how they got offloads away? He should be looking at a suspension out of the elbow.

Morgan is in the team, just a matter of whether he's wearing 3, 6 or 14. Of course Kevvie will give him a rap.

Love the dedication, Jimmmy. What do you think of Morgan? I've suspected for a while now that he could take more control of the team. It's just previously he's only had to do it for a game here or there when Thurston hasn't played. I think that he's having to be the number 1 playmaker for consecutive weeks and the certainty that this is his job for the rest of the season has helped him. He also seems more confident and decisive too.

Carbon copy of last week, constant one-out hit ups, slow defensive line, and handling errors up to the eyeballs.

Position vacant: Playmaker @ Canberra Raiders. Due to the fact that we as a club have no one who can kick a 40/20 put up a bomb to the two best wingers in the NRL, or get a repeat set. The Raiders are looking for a person who could fill this void. I personally don't have Josh Hodkinson's mobile & I don't have control of the Raiders salary cap, but I'm sure that if Jack Wighton, Luke Bateman & Aidan Seizer were offered to the Knights as a clean swap for the out of favour Hodkinson they would probably be in it. The Raiders would then be able to compete with every other team in the NRL who have a competent Fullback, second rower & half. Because at the moment they don't. While were at it could we advertise for a new Coach?

Cowboys deserved that victory. They were the only team that came to play a full game of footy. Raiders were terrible. I feel sorry for the fans that turned up in the freezing cold to watch their team put in a soulless performance. They looked clueless. I wrote this before, but it doesn't look like they do anything during the week. They seem to just turn up and hope things will go right like it did in the second half of 2016. Looking at their next two game the Raiders could be staring down a 6 game losing streak. Then for the rest of the season doesn't look that much better. Where did it all go wrong?

Ricky, if you pick Jack Wighton again I will never watch the Raiders play again. Finally you picked Dave Taylor who didn't do much wrong. While your at it get rid of Bateman & put someone who is able to tackle in his place. Ricky you have got to face facts. Wighton is the most hopeless fullback in the NRL. Gameplan against the Raiders, kick the ball to Wighton because if he does catch it, he will probably stuff the pass up or stuff up the play the ball. Ricky you don't seem to have the answers so I'm going to help you. Get rid of the love of your life Wighton. (He has had enough chances, he just doesn't cut the mustard) No other NRL team would have him. Put Cotric back to fullback. Keep Dave Taylor in the team Ring Nathan Brown & swap Wighton, Bateman & Siezer for Josh Hodkinson. If Canberra had a halfback who could get repeat sets or kick to the corners or kick full stop the team would win most games. At the moment there is nothing there

Surprised me Jimmmy. Morgan had a blinder and the Cowboys were in control for 80min which was fantastic.

Very impressive by the cows. They played very well tonight. Best game for Morgan this year and Martin has fit in very well. Played an excellent first game for the cowboys. Raiders just played a very poor game. Lots of disappointing performances across the park. Cotric a shining light. They have possible the best wingers in the competition. Halves were pretty poor again.

Had to stop watching. The raiders make playmakers from other sides look great. Morgan had enough time to have a cup of tea with every kick.
