Highlights: Jeff Horn wins the Battle of Brisbane via unanimous decision

By John Coomer / Roar Guru

Jeff Horn has shocked the boxing world in front of more than 50,000 of his home town fans, beating Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao in their WBO world welterweight title fight.

» How Jeff Horn shocked the world

The 29-year-old Horn was a massive underdog heading into the fight, having never stepped into the ring with anyone with anywhere near the ability and experience of Pacquiao.

But, spurred on by his home fans, Horn scored a unanimous decision in a high-intensity, close fight: 117-111, 115-113, 115-113.

Both fighters were cut during the bout to accidental head clashes. Horn showed early that he wasn’t intimidated, using his size advantage and being prepared to trade with Pacquiao.

Pacquaio smiled whenever Horn landed, but seemed to find Horn’s style awkward.

Most of the rounds in the fight were close and could have been scored either way. Horn arguably had slightly the better of the first six rounds, before Pacquiao upped the intensity from Rounds 7-9.

During Round 9, Pacquiao landed several big shots and Horn looked out on his feet. In between rounds, the referee informed Horn’s corner that he would stop the fight if Horn didn’t “show him something” in Round 10.

Horn got his second wind, and showed huge heart to claw his way back into the contest in Round 10.

Both fighters were exhausted but fought desperately in Rounds 11 and 12, knowing the title was on the line.

But, it was Horn who did enough in the judge’s eyes to earn a unanimous decision.

It was the biggest crowd to ever witness a boxing match in Australia, breaking the previous record of 38,000 set by Australia’s former three-division world champion Jeff Fenech against Ghana’s Azumah Nelson in 1992.

Horn’s record moves to 17-0-1 with the win, while Pacquiao drops to 59-7-2.

There is a rematch clause in the contract, and Pacquaio said immediately after the fight that he wanted a rematch.

He also said he didn’t expect such a tough fight, and that he respected the judges’ decision.

The loss could also spell the end of the 38-year-old 11-time world champion’s career. He doesn’t have anything to prove to anyone, he will always be remembered as a legend of the sport – but time may have caught up with him.

Meanwhile, Horn’s win opens a world of lucrative future opportunities for him, including a rematch with Pacquiao.

The welterweight division is currently awash with talent. There are two other undefeated champions, both from America. 28-year-old Keith “One Time” Thurman (28-0) is the reigning WBA and WBC champ, while 27-year-old Errol Spence Jr (22-0) is the IBF champ after impressively stopping former champ, Englishman Kell Brook (36-2), in the 11th round at Wembley in May.

Generation next in the welterweight division has well and truly arrived.

Horn doesn’t have to make a quick decision on his immediate future. For now, he can sit back and enjoy the accolades of one of the greatest performances in Australian boxing history.

Tails You're so right. The ESPN commentary was pathetic and completely biased towards pacco. As I've said up to the last round Atlas did not have Horn winning 1 round. Blind Freddy could see he'd won at least 6 rounds possibly 7. So when Horn was announced the winner Atlas had to save face with corruption claims etc. Just pathetic and quite frankly bloody wrong considering Horn had fought a tremendous and superior fight. We move on! One thinks maybe QH might have been listening to the ESPN commentary. Not sure if it was broadcast through anyone else. Perhaps that could be looked at for the return bout.

Nopuritan With due respect Quentin Hull is primarily a football commentator. I'm quite sure his credentials don't qualify him as a boxing judge. The fact is Horn was the better fighter on the day. After all Pacman (as you call him) was by his trainers admission supposed to knock out Horn within 4 rounds. When that didn't look like happening he started to panic. He laughed at Horns punches, dropped his gloves and basically disrespected his opponent. Fatal mistake in the fine art of boxing and he paid the price. I don't need to look at the fight "again". Winners are grinners as they say and Horn is trying to grin through his badly bruised face which was possibly damaged in the accidental head clash and not deliberate head butt. Deliberate head butts incur automatic disqualification(if bad enough) so you're wrong on that account as well as several other points. Acceptance of defeat is a sign of good sportsmanship. Manny has accepted it and his supporters need to follow his example. When the rematch occurs it should be a beauty and let's hope it's held at the "Home of Australian Sport" Suncorp Stadium.

No wonder Trump hates the US media. What a joke the ESPN commentary was. Yes, it was a hard fort battle with a bigger and stronger Horn using that to his advantage. Who cares if the US wanted a Pac Man win. Horn came to fight and he took it up to the Pac Man and scored with good jabs and leading rights right from Round 1. The Pac Man had no answer. Well done Jeff a True champion

Jack, The stats were broadcast throughout the bout. i watched the whole match on youtube about 10 minutes after it finished and i'd say it is probably still on the net so, it's there to check out if you want to. if you look at the video you'll find that Horn threw lots of punches that connected with Pacman's gloves and forearms, which aren't scoring punches. i don't dispute horns courage but what i took from it was that Pacman conciously did just enough to keep himself ahead on points. I was listening the footy on the ABC while the fight was on and they had updates after virtually every round from ABC sports journo Quentin Hull who was at the bout and he also said throughout that (and i'm a paraphrasing a bit) Horn was brave etc but not doing enough to win. from memory QH only gave him the 1st round. Horn also opened up Pacman twice with headbutts which are illegal and i think attract a penalty by way of a loss of a point. Horn didn't box him he mongrelled him with elbows, a few kidney shots, a rabbit punch or two, and as someone stated above used his elbows and forearms. All of which are illegal but pretty standard for the noble sport of boxing. I think if you look at how modern pro boxing works, particularly at the world champ level it's always about the rematch and the extra bucks that come with it. I'd say both fighters would be happy with the financial results and look forward to an even better payout on the rematch. Horn calling out Maywether after the fight was particularly ridiculous because in my opinion Horn is not in the same class even if Mayweather is almost old enough to get an age pension. Why didn't he call out a challenge to the current title holders of his weight division in the other boxing franchises such as IBF etc? don't stress about it though pro boxing is like MMA, UFC and WWE primarily entertainment not sport.

Nopuritan From where I sat Horn did not take a backward step all fight. Whose stats were they? Horn won the fight fair and square. What are you suggesting 3 "RINGSIDE" judges can't see what's going on. Quoting Leyton Hewitt "Come On" to use the tennis vernacular!" More punches, more landed and the decision was unanimous. "Give me a break". Hope we haven't got an Atlas supporter. That idiot didn't have Horn winning 1 round. No doubt in my mind and many others who won the bout!

jack, to borrow from the lexicon of tennis great John McEnroe "you can't be serious"? boxing is the least transparent, most criminal and corrupt sport in history. just look at the stats broadcast during the match. 80% of horns punches didn't land!! good luck to Horn for winning the prize but the decision was laughable.

Something must be said about that biased American boxing commentator who branded boxing corrupt after Horns win. Listen Atlas you have no idea about boxing and therefore retire from commentating. That rant you produced after the fight was nothing short of Juvenile Bad Sportsmanship and reeked of someone who had lost money on the fight. Keep your hairbrained comments to yourself and never detract from a memorable performance from another Great Australian Champion. Amen!

Totally deserved win to Horn. The New World Champion. Who is that imbecile yankee commentator Atlas. He has no idea whatsoever about boxing. I see he didn't have Jeff Horn winning one round. If you asked him who he had money on I think we would get the picture! Its a travesty these idiots are allowed to broadcast their opinion in such a blatantly biased manner. Is he saying 3 judges, who incidently weren't Australians, got it wrong. They all had Horn winning! It won't detract from the overwhelming victory of a truly great Australian fairytale. Pacquiao should be humble in defeat and as for his trainer who said before the fight. Breakfast/Church/Knock him out/Go home! A tiny bit OVERCONFIDENT I would say! Just a tad!!!!!

When I saw the decision I couldn't believe it. I went and watched the tape and scored the rounds myself and had Hornet winning in a tight 1 point decision. That's including a 10/8 to Pacman in the 9th. Outside that round I don't think Pacman scored any heavy hits. Sure there were a lot more tiny little counter puncher hits but he knew he was behind coming into the 9th and tried to stop it and I think would have 3-5 years ago. Horn, huge heart. every round but the 9th he came straight at him and I think over-all landed more of the bigger hits in each round to just get the biscuits. Who ever scored it 117-111 should never judge a bout ever again.

entertaining but a really dubious decision. Horn was gutsy but he's a brawler not a boxer. as for the judges scoring...one of them scored Horn at 117 to 111. and that was just ridiculous. even the ESPN commentators had Manny winning it. although one did acknowledge that as they were fighting in "Argentina" Horn had the home ground advantage with the scoring. but then pro boxing is not about the decision it's about the payday.

The kid totally earned that win He fought a great fight and seized the initiative from the get go. Pacqiou underestimated him completely and looked complacent until he realised he was behind. By that stage he didn't have enough in the tank to finish over the top. I do however think a rematch will prove more difficult for Horn as Pacqiou will step up a notch or two
