Wallabies' world ranking could be set to plummet

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

The recent Lions tour really shook up the rugby environment.

It showed that a well coached team of formidable players could stand up to a team ranked number one.

The Lions have taken this success home with them, and Northern Hemisphere fans, players and coaches are feeling a lot better about things these days.

Conversely, many Wallaby fans are feeling the reverse.

Right now, the Wallabies are ranked No.4 in the world. There are those who think that, after the Rugby Championships and the spring tour, Australia could rank as low at 9.

Are you shocked? Don’t be. None of the people I talked to are disappointed, long-faced pessimists.

They’re unemotional rugby watchers living in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, who suspect that the new Wallaby training squad, when it’s reduced to 23 Test starters, won’t have enough outstanding talent to compete with the big guns. Or even the medium guns.

And they feel that the lack of talent applies to some of the coaching staff, too.

They break it down like this – the Wallabies will play seven matches from August 19 to October 21. Three against the All Blacks, and two each against The Boks and the Pumas.

They play Japan on November 4, Wales on the 12th, England on the 19th and Scotland on the 26th.

Of the five guys and one woman I talked to four of them saw the Japan match as the only victory the Wallabies will have.

The other two agreed with that but predicted a win against Argentina in Canberra.

So how about it, Roarers? Are these people unfortunately right or hopelessly wrong? Come November 27th, where do you think the Wallabies will rank?

All of you are Dreaming, where are you from, get out of the Australia if you have no hope,or move and support the netball or waterball. All you do is yepyep your big mouth, it shows you did not even play the game. I predict that we will win all our game for the rest of the year, believe me or not. OK, get lost and don't bring any rubbish article like this again, ok

That you could be very average and stay in the top 10 says a lot about the Rugby "world"

As an AB fan,I am expecting the Boks to really stretch the AB's this year.Maybe, even take a test. One thing I noticed watching the French tests was the Boks defence seems to have improved,so the blacks may struggle to score tries a la v the Lions.

Just select a few more kiwis from the Mitre10 cup. It will certainly lift the overall standard.

Fair enough, so you're saying miracles can happen twice in the same season. Good point.

Belated "thought" watching Bumbles - given the age difference, Tony Brown involvement, was Tanaka the prototype for Aaron's recruitment after languishing at Blues and then Shag taking notice??

Don't know about current fitness/availability, but Jamie J. (All Black hard man in his day) knows a lot about Tanaka. An Aaron clone might upset sluggish Oz ruck defence or have wide passing isolating bunched defenders? "After initially being limited to mainly to substitute appearances behind All Blacks scrum half Aaron Smith, in Tanaka's second start in Super Rugby he was highly lauded for his performance against the Blues which even drew positive comments from the IRB CEO Brett Gosper.[16][17][18][19] In June 2013, Tanaka helped inspire Japan to their first ever win over Wales wheren Aaron clonehe continued his run of form and was praised as one of the game's outstanding performers.[20][21][22] He was also instrumental to the Japanese 32–34 victory over the Springboks in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, being selected Man of the Match."

Hey Boet , not all of us ... But I am facing reality rather than embracing mediocrity. How good are the current Bok team ? We don't really know do we . Personally I thought France were below par and If I have to make a bold prediction for the Rugby Championship I would call it almost identically to last years results . The All Blacks winning all games . Aussies beating the Boks at home and losing away and as for Argentina , well they are a bit of an unknown . probably may squeeze a game or 2 at home ..the travel is an issue but nothing on the road I'm afraid.

Using the ranking calculator here: http://rugby.alfred-wallace.com/ Its easy enough to make some real predictions. After the first two weeks of RC Its likely Australia and SA will swap ranking places, Aus at 5, SA at 4. Then in the next two rounds SA and Argentina play in Australia. If Aus win both games they return to 4th (Boks to 5th), but if they lose to SA then the Boks climb to 3rd, and Aus stays at 5th. (I am assuming Aus will beat Arg at home). However this round does not matter too much, as regardless of how the fixture between SA and Aus plays out in Australia, the match in SA will determine the ranking positions. If SA wins, they go to 3rd, and Aus to 5th. And if Aus wins, they will go to either 4th or 3rd, depending if they also won the home fixture. While SA go to 5th. In the final round, if Aus lose away to Argentina, they can fall to 5th, 6th, or 7th depending on if they have won both, one, or none of their games vs SA respectively. However if Aus win away against Arg then they cannot fall below 5th in the rankings, and can be as high as 3rd if they beat the Boks in SA. So prior to the November tour it would require a much improved showing from Argentina to knock the Wallabies lower than 5th on the rankings. And even on tour, if the wallabies can pick up a single victory from either England, Wales or Scotland then they should maintain their 5th ranking spot. Interestingly, if SA can beat Ireland on the November tour, then Aus can finish the year 4th despite a win loss record of 7-7 for 2017 [2-1 (June tour); 0-3 (ABs); 1-1 (SA); 2-0 (Arg); 2-2 (Nov tour)]...

It wont be as bad as 9th but it certainly wont be second. Last time I read the rankings system doesnt work like that. Either way its not great reading for the two time world champions.

Graves and Poite are good. Not emotional and perhaps because they are French they don't seem to have the All Blacks on a special pedestal that English speak referees (e.g. Nigel Owens) do. So many Kiwis out there that tend to flood social media enraged at the occasional call against them with all sorts of rationale. Take an objective look and Garces/Poite were fine.

The Wallabies won't be as low as 9, at least not this year as the ranking system works slowly and awkwardly. But they could end up with SA, Wales and the Scots unofficially ahead of them when they lose to those three sides, as I think they will, in the RC and the EOTY tour. But whatever, their ranking will probably be a new low for them. A team has to reach bottom before it can be turned around. I'm afraid the Wallabies, abetted by their coaches and the ARU, are on their way down.

Also JR, remembering that to some extent McQueen is the architect of the regimented style of play that still haunts Australian rugby, would he be the person to set Australia onto a path of hopefully successful unscripted rugby?

When a South African team starts losing to all and sundrye signs are there our rugby is nearing the toilet.
