Broncos ruthless in Titans demolition

By News / Wire

A Ben Hunt masterclass has helped ease Brisbane back into the top four as the Broncos handed Gold Coast a 54-0 drubbing on Saturday.

Starting from the bench, Hunt made light of his new role at hooker with a hat-trick of tries in the absence of injured Andrew McCullough, the Titans enduring their biggest NRL loss.

Hunt scored twice inside 25 minutes of his introduction, set up an Anthony Milford try with a clever short kick and split the defence to race away for his hat-trick midway through the second half.

The St George Illawarra-bound utility broke the line again to set up Corey Oates for another long-range effort to make it 42-0 after 67 minutes.

When Kodi Nikorima picked up a loose ball and sprinted 95 metres to score, it pushed the hiding to a record-breaking margin.

Josh McGuire finished the embarrassment, strolling through the middle of the Titans’ defence to score inside the last minute.

A healthy crowd of 21,716 were witness to a Broncos side at their most ruthless, Joe Ofahengaue joining the action with a masterful flick pass to gift James Roberts a try against his former club.

The Titans could manage just four points against Wests Tigers last weekend and looked no better against the Broncos.

Gold Coast skipper Ryan James vented his frustration in the second half, squaring up to Roberts in a sideline scuffle.

Roberts appeared to land a punch, but somehow avoided the ire of the officials.

Ofahengaue was placed on report for a spear tackle on Kane Elgey.

Gold Coast halfback Ashley Taylor came in for heavy treatment and was never a factor as he limped off late in the game with a knee injury.

The Titans had more than 60 percent of the ball in the first 20 minutes but could not translate that into points.

Joe Greenwood came close, narrowly held up in the 10th minute, while Taylor’s short kicking game helped force three goal-line dropouts.

Instead it was the Broncos who opened the scoring, Nikorima easily scampering through a gap between Greenwood and Max King to begin the carnage.

Exactly, Elgy and Taylor hasn’t worked all year, Taylor and Roberts worked, you don't need to be Einstein to figure that out.

Taylor is a talent. Go back and watch what he did to Cronulla in the rain the other week. Bennett wants him because he can kick, which is something the Millford/Nikorima combination will struggle with.

Elgy and Taylor hasn't worked all year, why do Henry keep this going with combination. 1.2m is a waste of space.

That's a fair point. I only saw the excerpt from Fox Sports and not the whole press conference. However, players and coaches don't get fined for commenting on incidents or decisions in the game. The 10K fine is for questioning the referees integrity. They can comment on decisions during games as long as they do it appropriately. So by saying "I don't have 10 grand" James is effectively saying "I can't comment without questioning the refs integrity." Maybe that's not how it's meant but there are certainly better, more mature and more appropriate ways for a club captain to answer a question like that - particularly after a 54-0 defeat. Maybe something like "I thought it was a pretty clear sinbin offence but at 54-0 it didn't really effect the outcome." Perfectly gets the message across, no 10 grand fine. I'm just completely over refs faulting. Players and coaches are like the boy that cried wolf - it's difficult to take them seriously even when they might have a valid point.

P Air, Last night was awful but they have beaten a few good teams this year. If Rugby League can't support a team as the main code in the sixth biggest city in Australia and the second biggest in Queensland it should give up. Crowds are good, membership is ok, performances last year were strong and should have the best young halves combination in the competition (though they and the super star costing them plenty are playing like shit). Now all we need is a multi millionaire stupid enough to buy a football team but multi's normally aren't that dumb

It was a specific question about the punch, though I agree it didn't need to be said

What a disgrace. They played like childish schoolboys. Elgy and Taylor combination doesn't work, it didn't last week and didn't again this weekend. Is that the same Taylor that Bennett wants...why? Last week he didn't direct the team nor this week, have these guys clocked off for the season? The Titans have $1.2m in salary cap consistently putting bottom of the rung performances. Hayne was the man of the match for Qld in the State of Origin this year and his form is worse for the Titans.. I wouldn't feed him let alone pay him money.

Barry if you watched the full interview youd serve yourself better...he was asked 'what do you think of the non sin binning of James Roberts after he hit you ?' to which he responded I haven't got 10 grand.... So you twist that response,Im presuming ignorant of the context, and ,completely without watching the other 7 minutes or so of the presser where both he and Coach Henry expressed total and abject disappoint in their own performance and praise of their opponents, into James blaming the ref for the loss...it's a poor contribution to the Whinge at the Refs suck Thread..which generally I support..

as a broncs fan, impossible not to have not enjoyed last night and been a little relieved that the loss of mccullough might not be as horrendous as feared. no matter how badly the titans played, the broncs played well. you can only play what is in front of you and to put 50 on any side in the comp and not concede a point is a really good effort. sure, it does not translate to grand final glory but it was a hell of a lot better than the previous week. if they can keep this standard, every chance they'll be a contender end of season. hard to see the storm being beaten at the moment but key injuries, a bit of luck, a dud decision or two and who knows. long way to go yet.

Stop dreaming? they pummeled a team who put 30 on Cronulla a few weeks ago. What does that say about the Sharks?

I guess I'm just from a different era. There's no way I'd be bagging a ref (or anyone) after copping a 50 point flogging. When I played I was on both ends of scorelines like that. I don't remember any of them being the refs fault. As for refs ending their season, I thought it was the 7 wins and 13 losses that had done that.

Broncos fans can stop dreaming of grand final glory. Flogging a team that has downed tools for the year is nothing to get excited about. The NRL should fine the Titans for bringing the game into disrepute for such a lacklustre effort. Better still, can we just raised the blade and bring it down on the Titans venture, severing it neatly and quickly. Then bring in a 2nd Brisbane team or mid to north coast NSW or QLD team.

i think it was pangai jnr with the flick pass, not joe O. blair pushes the envelope but joe O surely tore it apart last night with that spear tackle. he'll be lucky to be back before the finals. awful tackle.

The "flick pass" was from Pangai to Roberts not from Ofahengaue.

Certainly...but in context, here's a side that's fresh off having their season ended by 2 tries that Archer quickly admitted were incorrectly awarded (Penrith game)...running around with that in the back of your mind...kaboom shoulder charged...kaboom team mate shoulder charged....kaboom...straight left on the chin in the 44th,aggressor puts the game to bed in the 54th....Ofengauhe,Blair and Jimmy all still out there.....they got flogged, they 'felt like idiots' acknowledged in the interview...only thing left to do is 'take' his 'grace'...

Yeah...but there's such a thing as good grace. You get beat 54-0 cop it on the chin and don't bring the ref into it.
